It sounds cool but it won't be the same without Jim Henson. He was the genius behind the original. I miss that dear man. I wonder what kind of movies he would be making now if he was still around.

tis true, and reading that, my worst fears are realized....there will be cgi in the movie. (edit: aka, they're doing this for the money, not to honor henson)
without henson, his legacy was a dying art form.

I think unless the movie was specifically made to have sequels, like say Back to the Future, I don't want one. It usually just ends up pissing on a great movie.

As a fan of what the Henson company is still capable of (Farscape is one of my favourite shows ever), I'm excited for this. PLUS it's the same writers.

Isn't this, say, twenty YEARS late?

Brian Henson has continued to follow in Jim's footsteps making excellent films. I am sure that a sequel to the Dark Crystal is not a sudden, snap, money driven decision. And while Jim Henson's absence will be felt, there is another player who must be a part of this sequel otherwise it will be doomed to complete and utter failure to even come close to the original. Brian Froud.
He is the artistic genious whos vision defined the world of the Dark Crystal. If Brian Froud does not sign on to do this sequel, they might as well pack it in.
CGI doesn't bother me, bad design does.

But if you watch the special features of the Back to the Future DVD's, they never "planned" to make a sequel. They simply left the door open for a sequel (a common practice in Hollywood) with the ending for the original film. Then they had to figure out what to do with the sequel(s).
The Dark Crystal is a masterpiece as the movie is literally its own self-contained world. The sequel does not sound promising. I'm tired of CGI being used a crutch these days...

Just so you know, Jim Henson was a pioneer in using CGI effects in his films and TV projects.
"Fraggle Rock" and "The Storyteller" both used CGI backgrounds and special effects to an extensive degree.
"Muppet Television" had "Waldo C Graphic" as a recurring character.
Those are just a few examples.
Henson LOVED high tech trickery combined with puppets!
He would LIKE this sort of thing. :)
If you think Henson would be offended by CGI, then you don't quite know his "legacy" as well as you think.

^^
Word!
Just because CGI is being used doesn't make it a crutch any more than using puppets for aliens and paintings for backgrounds.
Jim Henson's Creature Shop is one of THE most creative companies out there.

Exactly.
Jim Henson _never_ pretended to be some sort of "traditional puppetry purist" while alive. If a high tech short-cut was possible, he took it.
And in many cases, innovated it!

I really, really, really hope Frank Oz directs, or at least co-directs this with Brian Henson. And yes, Brian Froud needs to do the conceptual designs, or it won't be worth doing.

After "The Stepford Wives" I no longer have the faith in Oz that I used to.
