For me, it has to be Frank Drebin (Naked Gun Series).
The worst was Hopper (Speed). He couldn't defeat the Unabomber.

Dirty Harry. The definition of cool.
The Godfather of movie cool though is Frank Bullit played by Steve McQueen. Up until that character all cops were like on Dragnet, button down, by the book stick up the ass...Bullit was the first 'rebel' cop, hell he even wore a turtle-neck and made it work.

Martin Riggs of Lethal Weapon fame.
Indiana Jones is a very close second.

Fast Eddie Felsen, Paul Newman's character in "The Huster".

Only One character has ever truly been the very esscence of Cool, and that character was so Cool that the word Cool was part of his name:
Cool Hand Luke. Mr Paul Newman at his greatest.
Close calls with McQueen in Bullitt and "Fast" Eddie in both The Hustler and Color Of Money though.

1. Han Solo
2. Hiltz AKA "The Cooler King" from the Freat Escape (as played by STEVE MACQUEEN!)
3. Sgt Elias (Willem Dafoe)
4. Ed Norton in Fight Club was cool in a geeky kind of way.
5. John Matrix from Commando
6. Richard Crenna as Rambo's Colonel. "Sam Trautman! COLONEL Samuel Trautman!"
My worst would have to be
1. Ewan MacGreggor! Hell, I loved you in Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, but you are NOT Alec Guiness Jr.
2. Woody Allen in any movie
3. Charles Chaplain in any movie
4. Steamboat Willie (toot-toot) from SPR. Killing Tom Hanks is like...SO not cool!
5. Sean Connery in Hunt For Red Oktober "Yesh, cgold inDeeD!"
6. Adam Sandler in any film he's ever been in. Especially Happy Gilmour!

It's gotta go to Clint, but I'd pick his character in High Plains Drifter over Dirty Harry.
Honorable mention to Sands (Johnny Depp) from Once Upon A Time I Mexico, and Spoon from Dog Soldiers.

If there is a King, there has to be a Queen...
Diana Rigg, as Mrs. Emma Peel. She was able to kick the crap out of any man and still remain a consumate lady. She had zero 'attitude', Emma was all class.

The brothers from Boondock saints
George clooney in From dusk til dawn (everybody be cool, you be cool)

Indiana Jones. The guy would be taking bullets from every conceivable angle and still be able to keep his hat on.

My most obvious picks would be Yoda and John Shaft (suprised no one mentioned him).
But I will also mention Seiji Miyaguchi who played Kyuzo in Seven Samurai. I loved it when he and Toshiro Mifune chased after the bandit spies in the woods and he just sat calmly under a tree before he killed them.

Ron Burgundy 'I have many important books and my apartment smells of mahogany!" Pure class.
Also, Yoda, Samuel L. Jackson in half his films, Wolverine, Dirty harry.

All this and no mention of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe? (Bogart)
And what about Sean Connery Bond?

Jules from "Pulp Fiction".
Verbal Kint from "The Usual Suspects". If you have to ask why he's cool, you haven't seen the movie, and I ain't gonna spoil it for you! Even when you think you've broken him, you haven't.
Spencer for Hire(and a holla to J. Harper, devout Spencer buff).

Doc Holiday (Tombstone)

Sean Connery/Pierce Brosnan James Bond: Set records for the number of women they nail in a movie.
Han Solo: He and Chewie were pretty much the only people in the trilogy to know what the hell they were doing.
.
.
.
.
.
Wait, scratch that. CHEWIE knew what he was doing, Han had no clue.
Indiana Jones: Him and his father. I'd love to be a student in that archeology class.
Mace "Pimp Hand" Windu: See the Clone Wars animated series and any of the comic books for WHY.

Doc Holiday (Tombstone)
"Bullet Tooth" Tony (Snatch)
General George Patton (Patton)

1. Indiana Jones-- From Nazis to crazy Hindu Cults, he was the cat that delivered 10 times out of 10.
2. Sam Sheppard as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff--- Dude just went out and did his job...celebrity be damn.
Well I define "cool" as someone with the right mixture of confidence, audaciousness, class and itelligence.
Pierce Brosnan as James Bond.
Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator.
Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart .
For women I would have to go with:
Lady Eboshi from Princess Mononoke.
Diana Rigg as 'Tracy' in On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Sharon Stone as Catherine Tremmell in Basic Instinct
Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider

I think Son was much cooler than Lady Eboshi...how many women do you know that would suck the blood out of your bullet wound?
Neil McCauley...the top theif from Heat, played by Bobby De Niro, back when he could still act. Coolest man under fire in the history of crime cinema.

He doesn't do enough in the prequel trilogy to be cool as Mace Windu.
And I always thought the protagonists from Brotherhood of the Wolf were pretty badass.

Funny he's really cool in the cartoons but not in the movies. The cartoon Mace is this strong silent badass warrior and the movie Mace is dull cranky old guy who sits around a lot.

James Caan as Frank in "Thief"
Clint Eastwood as Harry Calahan in "Dirty Harry"
Paul Newman as "Cool Hand Luke"
Samuel Jackson as Jules in "Pulp Fiction"
Sean Connery as James Bond in "Dr. No" and "Goldfinger"
and my personal favorite -
Kurt Russell as Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China"

Chili Palmer ( Travolta ) from Be Cool.
Also, Frank Bullit as played by Steve McQueen. See The Tao of Steve.
The coolest character on TV would have to be Kojak. I really want to see a movie version of him someday. In an otherwise very realistic show he was a figure of fantasy, always right, always cool, mouthing off to his superior officers, waltzing through every situation and hardly even bothering to draw his gun half the time. A bullet wouldn't dare come near him.

I'd like to see a comedy version of Kojak ala "Starsky and Hutch" with Dave Attell in the lead.

I agree. Private eyes are just about the coolest characters in motion picture history.
Why have we gone this long without a mention of Jack? That guy has several patents on cool. EVERY role he's been in is cool. He's the king.

Jake Gittes in Chinatown.
And we need more love for Kevin Smith characters, particularly Randal and Brodie, my personal role model.
