If you're mainly interested in Spider-Man and X-Men:

Amazing Spider-Man is in my opinion very good (it's written by Joe Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5 - that might be a selling point for you). I read it by trade paperback, so I don't know what's going on in recent issues.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a new, continuity-free re-writing of the Spider-Man concept - as if Peter became Spidey *now*, rather than forty years ago. Bar a couple of poor issues, it's been a great read - I also get the trades with it, so again I don't know what's going on right now.

Spider-Man/Human Torch is a 5 issue mini-series (3 out so far) that I haven't read, but people keep recommending it to me - meant to be good fun and very funny.

Over in X-Men land . . .

Excalibur features Xavier and Magneto, if you want to read about them. The plot is about to get very convoluted now, though, with the House of M crossover - basically the premise is Magneto, Xavier, Callisto, and various new characters living in the ruins of Genosha and trying to rebuild it, with Magneto *possibly* losing his grip on sanity a bit and Xavier keeping an eye firmly on him.

Uncanny X-Men and plain old X-Men are the main team books - fairly standard stuff.

District X is a mutant cop book, with Bishop and a human partner as detectives in an area of New York with a very high human population - the first arc was pretty enjoyable, but I didn't think the second (which just finished) was nearly as good.

Exiles is a book about a team of dimension-hopping mutants going from alternate universe to alternate universe - kind of like X-Men meets Quantum Leap. Quite offbeat, at times pretty funny, in my opinion the most consistently enjoyable X-Men team book.

Cable & Deadpool you've already mentioned - I love this book, can't get enough of it :D If you like either of the title characters I'm sure you'll love it - if not, pick up a couple of issues just to try it out.

New X-Men is the current book about the students at the school (with several of the original New Mutants as teachers). The students are all effectively new, which means the writers can play around a lot with developing them and shaking things up. It's had a few shaky issues and I'm not keen on the art, but overall it's a great read.

Finally, Ultimate X-Men is the X-Men equivalent of Ultimate Spider-Man - but if you're looking for something familiar, you might not like it as a lot of the characters are changed.

That's all I can think of for now - are there any particular characters you want to read about?

You better get your dose of Young Avengers and Green lantern rebirth when the TBP comes and then #1 when it comes. theres also a mini featuring kyle guy and kilowog when done. Dont worry, rebirth will explain all so you can start at GL #1. Cable deadpool is the funnist comic i ever read. Your good with the spidey as well. (Mind you this is just all my opinion. Some people like arana, that just started or runaways, some like that. While your on the marvel side, i'd hit up house of M which is the entire marvel universe. For DC, maybe batman, GL like you said, and Teen Titans is great. JMS from amazing spidey starts on fantastic four #527 if you like his stuff. I'll shut up now.

cable/deadpool is a great comic. i just recently had to remove it from my pull list b/c i'm getting too many titles every month and i'm running out of money. :(

If you like Spider-Man, try Spider-Girl. Its a very fun book. Another I would recommend would be New Thunderbolts. It's Marvels best team book.
