View Full Version : Which limbo Marvel character is your favorite?

Emerald Ghost
05-10-2005, 06:33 PM
The rules, in this case, to judge limbocity are that the character does not appear regularly in any Marvel book. Regular being every issue, or at least every few issues.

If they appear only once or twice as if in an effort to prove they are indeed still alive, then they can be considered limbo for the sake of argument in this thread.

For me, I'll cheat and pick two. Cloak and Dagger.

Ack, I'm fairly sure there are about a hundred characters I could name here but my mind's gone blank. Quite a few X-characters I miss, like Rictor, Siryn, Skids, Proudstar, even Cannonball counts at the moment.

Cload and Dagger would be high on the list for me too. There's a lot that could be done with Black Knight but he's not on the radar. I always thought Blackwulf and his cast had potential, and it'd be nice to see more of the Eternals and Inhumans. I have a soft spot for Living Lightning. Jolt would be good to see, and Moonstone.

The winner of this award, though, is Captain Marvel/Photon, Monica Rambeau. Its a crime that she's spent so long out of regular circulation, a crime I tells ya!

Did she appear throughout the whole thing?
Was she integral to the plot somehow?

"The Hobgoblin

Doctor Doom"

Dr. Doom? He's the premier villain in comic books. I think the creator of this thread meant characters who are rather obscure by their infrequent appearances. Doom's presence is very prominent in Marvel.

I'll take The Shroud.

She appears quite a bit. She's married to Beast in the future, and they run a Mutant Rescue Hospital together in Africa. I always loved her and Hank together, so I really would like to see her pop back out of limbo, and for that relationship to take off in the current storylines. She's so much better for him than Trish Tilby. :D

Considering that Doctor Doom is a villain -- and a very used one throughout the Marvel Universe, at that -- do you expect him to show up in a book every month?

Saying Doom is a character in limbo is like saying Michael Jordan was underrated in the NBA -- it makes no sense, IMO.

Macnine Man aka X-51 aka Arron Stack.

Got into the character via Earth X, picked up his X-51 series liked it though most of the series. Have been trying to pick up his back issue from ebay.

Now Limboed since he stepped into the 'Monolith' at the end of his cancelled series, alaso after recieving a huge powerup from the Celestrials themselves. Don't know what the powerup did to him though, it was all explained in the last issue, but not properly.

Limboed since 2000.

Let's see for me I've always loved Lyja from the Fantastic Four, I'd love for someone to bring her back.

I wish that someone would bring back Sharon Ventura and bring some closure to her story.

I also really miss Spider-Man 2099, it was a great series and I wish they'd release tpbs for it.

As for villians, I really miss Shriek from Spider-Man, there was alot of potential plus Spidey needs a serious female villian.

Whatever happened to Sharon?

And Spidey definitely should have at least one memorable, lasting female villain...he has had a couple of cool lady adversaries, but writers don't seem to follow up on them.

"If a character is not used for a while, he or she is in limbo. This goes for villains as well. :)"

Then you and I have considerably different views of "comic book limbo." I consider it to be someone who hasn't been in a book in a certain amount of years (at least three years nonstop) or very few showings (say, one time in five years).

Characters also can have a visible or evident presence in the comic universe, even if not seen in a book. For instance, Gwen Stacy still has a presence in the Spider-Man books, because there is an occasional reference to her. Doctor Doom may not appear in a book in months, but his presence and reputation are known throughout Marvel.

If a character hasn't been seen in years and has no obvious presence in Marvel, I can see that character being in limbo. However, listing a character like Doctor Doom flies in the face of the term.

Oh, no, you misunderstand me.

Yes, in real life, Dr. Doom is not in limbo. But for the sake of this thread, he is. Because basically I don't care enough to try to figure out how many times a villain has to appear to make him not in limbo...know what I mean? :)

No worries.

I'm going to agree that Dr. Doom is not in character limbo. He was central to the plot of FF over the last year or so (Authoritive Action and the lead-up to that). Sure he's currently dead, but he'll be back in the next few months.

Husk is appearing in Excaliber as we speak. Green Goblin (4) is appearing in Runaways. Dr. Strange is not only appearing all over the freaking place, but he's got his own freakin' series right now, so i don't know how anyone could say he's in character limbo.

This thread as been a real trip down memory lane.

Characters I'd like to see back in play:
1. SILVER SABLE!!!!
2. The Shroud
3. Solo
4. Machine Man
5. Cloak and Dagger
6. Tigra
7. Mad-Dog & Hell-Cat
8. Misty Knight
9. Iron Fist (okay, okay, so he's made brief cameos here and there, and has his own brief utterly crappy mini, but I want some REAL Iron Fist action. And I want the first line of the comic to be "You are Iron Fist!")
10. Shang-Chi

I'm not "clenching", I just don't think he's in anything resembling "character limbo". He's very much "in play" as we speak. I mean, what does this guy want? For Doom to show up every month somewhere? We'd all get really sick of him pretty quick if he was everywhere always.

At anyrate, he's certainly not in the same limbo that Devil Dinosaur, Wood-God, etc. are in. He's not even in the same limbo that Silver Sable (unseen since the Spidey relaunch a few years back) is in.

Or maybe it's not okay with you that some people disagree with declaring Doom in limbo?

Jackalope and I aren't trying to start an argument, but just give constructive criticism. Doctor Doom was just in a major storyline in The Fantastic Four less than a year ago (called "Unbreakable"), and he's THE premier villain in comic books. His presence is evident in the Marvel Universe even if he does not make an appearance (see "Secret War," where several Marvel superheroes did a covert job for S.H.I.E.L.D. to overthrow the Latverian government).

Obviously, you don't want to step on anyone's toes and that's fine. What we're saying is to some of the posters characters like Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange hardly qualify as "characters in limbo." It's the opposite, because they are usually among the characters most associated with the Marvel brand.

Yeah, good phrase about stepping on people's toes..and true.

Just keep in mind the normal rules of limbo don't apply here, see the very first post. It says they have to appear ever issue or ever few issues to be limbo. So Doom is valid in that sense.

But that's the problem ... it doesn't make sense. The only characters who don't qualify under your terms for being in limbo are those who have a solo title or are in a team book. Every villain will be considered "in limbo" by that definition if they are not in a book right now. Do you really expect villains -- which outside of Catwoman, generally do not have their own titles and as a rule make fewer appearances -- to be seen in comics with the same regularity as superheroes?

You seriously need to change the title of your thread to "Which Marvel character that has been in a book the past three months is your favorite?" if that is your train of thought. IMO, that invalidates your thread.

another vote for cloak and dagger here-i've never understood how two of the coolest looking characters in comics remain so underused

i'd say thor and hawkeye, but they'll be back, once the quesda/bendis reign of psuedo-hip terror ends

my big pick would be valkyrie, who, with the exception of a brief appearance in the short-lived vol. 2 of defenders and a few other spots, has been nearly nonexistant since the defenders eneded back in 1986. considering that she was pretty high profile in the 70s, her disappearance in marvel is kind of odd

The Juggernaut is not a member of The X-Men now. He, Sabretooth, Exodus, Black Tom Cassidy, Mammorax (a Chuck Austen creation) and Nocture of The Exiles were swept way in some black hole in typical Austen fashion about seven months ago.
