Some of you may recall that a few months ago I discovered that my funding (I'm a youth worker) had been removed. And I had been left with the possiblilty of unemployment.

My boss went out of her way to keep me on and applied for new funding. In the intervening month there was nothing for me to do so i was seconded to a street wardens team to help paint as kids playground. (I am so bored of painting right now).

So finally she secured funding to keep me on but instead of working with young people its to work with adults who are at risk of eviction from their properties because of their anti social behaviour. Its a pilot project and only guarantees emplyment til september.

MEANWHILE I had applied for a job on the Youth & Community team of a job project in London's west end. The letter informing me I had an interview never reached me and I only found out 24hrs before the interview. So i had to make up a presentation on a subject I knew very little about over night.

To my complete and utter surprise they have offered me the job. And now I feel bad because if I take it I've got to tell my boss who went out of her way to secure mny current job for me which I have only been in for a week.

I know its a good problem to have but I'm feeling bad already and I've got 12 hours to give an answer.

If the new job is one you think you will enjoy far more, you will just have to be honest with her. Thank her for all her support. If you don't take the job you want to do more, then you will always feel bad about it. Seeing how she went through all the trouble to help you, she seems very understanding.

Hmm... Well, this is a direct result of the position you were in - a position your boss was well-aware of. Despite whatever measures she took to help you out, they were NOT guaranteed and apparently aren't permanent. With that in-mind, I'm sure she expected you to make whatever arrangements you could to look out for yourself. If it turns out that those arrangements are somehow more attractive than those your boss made, that's not your fault or hers. That's just life.

I'd suggest that you choose what ultimately is best for YOU, then face the consequences (and any guilt) somewhat secure in the knowledge that you didn't do anything wrong.

It could still work out well.

If she's a mature, professional person, she won't hold it against you.

Hey Rogue,
I'd take the better job, and then go out of your way to do a good deed for your old employer, return the favour.

It's all a matter of checks and balances.

Very good idea.

You'll both probably feel better afterward.

Wrong tone, but you know what I meant.

One is the job you want to do.

The other will get you bitten by a rabid chav.

Seems pretty clear to me.

So I decided to negotiate for more money with the drugs project people and they offered me almost £2000 more than I'm on now.

Decision made

Now all I gotta do is face my boss

A true hero would have gone for it with the stewardesses.

Nope, Rogue, you ain't never gonna live that down. It's gonna be your equivalent of "suck a cool guy."

Edit: switching jobs does sound like the way to go, though. Good luck.

You know what guys?

Lay off RS.

His reasons for not banging the fliught attendants was that he in a commited relationship with a wonderful woman and doesn't want to screw it up.

I'm sorry, but that gets him a pass.

Plus, have you SEEN his SO? That gets him a pass too...

It's true she's a hottie, and he's an honorable guy. Which is why the shit is given in the spirit of fun.

I do like that idea of asking her to dress up in the stewardess outfit, though. And maybe she could invite a similarly-dressed friend!

see she'd probably do the outfit, its just the friend bit it all falls down on.

Well, the outfit is a place to start, then.

This is probably too late for your decision, but I'd suggest talking with the new company about when you'll be starting. Unless they absolutely demand you start right away, see if you they'll agree to you starting a little later and explain to them that you'd like to finish a project in your current job, or at least help find someone to replace you at the current place and maybe train him.

I did that with a previous new job. I told them that I didn't want to leave in the the old company in the middle of an unfinished project and wanted to finish it, and they agreed I can start a month later. As an extra positive, it also shows the new company/boss your dedication in your work--that you won't leave them in a lurch.
