A friend of mine is interested in comics with angels in them, recently I stumbled across some back issues of Ascension, the title drawn by David Finch.

The problem is that I know next to nothing about this series, all I know is that it has angelic overtones and that it's Image, which means the art is pretty damned decent.

But is it worth picking up? Is the title still running? Have there been published any paperbacks collecting this series?

and more importantly... was, or is, it any good?

I've never read it, and I don't think it's still running. But here's an overview with cover images. It doesn't sound like it has angels in the traditional sense--more like mutants with wings in an apocalyptic battle.
Ascension (http://www.gottawiz.com/Comics/TopCow/Ascension/Ascension.htm)

A quick search through Previews for some more recent stuff with angels: (Note I've not read any of these so I can't vouch for them.)

Lucifer (http://www.dccomics.com/features/lucifer/) (DC: Vertigo) #1 is free online.

Brian Pulido's Unholy (http://www.avatarpress.com/unholy/index.html) (Avatar) about a human turned fallen angel drafted by God.

Archangels (http://www.cahabaproductions.com/comics.htm) (Cahaba). This looks like it's from a Christian publisher, so the comic probably has more traditional renditions of angels.

"The Last Minute" by Aces & Eights Publications.

Ascend (http://www.imagecomics.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?main=news&sub1=press&sub2=152) (Image) and previews (http://www.pcbproductions.com/HTMLfiles/ASCEND/) - more fallen angels. This is a GN, not an ongoing comic series.

I have the series.

Ascension ran for 22 issues. It was about a group of people sent into a parallel plane, and they get caught up in a war between two sets of angel-type beings (Dayaks and Mineans).
It was fairly decent. An enjoyable fantasy romp.
Unfortunately, #22 ended on a cliffhanger, and there's been nothing since.
