So let me get this straight... Mullin lives? That was unexpected. And Exile is an intergalactic ship... but they don't go to a new planet? They do go and then come back?

And their world is shaped like an hourglass... which explains the Grand Stream and the two countries, but it would seem that people would notice the sides...

Overall I thought it was a gorgeous series, but the ending left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled. Dio ended tragically (and kind of stupidly), Alex got vengeance for his love with a sweet neck snap, but then dies anyway, and Sophia is left thinking that her name was his dying word, when it was her sister's instead... a harmless little white lie? But Mullin lives and has a little monkey with his gunner girl, so it's all good.

Mullin lived? Wait, I really must have missed something. How could I have missed that? But... that's whose funeral everyone was at wasn't it? Did we see alternate endings? Was the DVD ending different than the AU ending? Maybe I was so distracted by all the other unsatisfying finale stuff that I missed the details. I'll have to check out the last episode again I guess.

It's in the final scenes of the last episode... everyone is at the farmhouse where Lavie and Claus grew up (which I thought they'd lost, but whatever). Claus and Lavie are flying, and Mullin is running through the wheat fields with some kid on his shoulders that I assume is his (though no-one else seems to have aged much). I don't think it was meant to be symbolic...

That's not the ending I saw either on the DVD. Weird. Mullin was dead in the version I saw. Poor Mullin.

No, Mullin lived, and IIRC the funeral they attended was held for Alex.

Mullin appears to have died in the episodes before the finale; in fact, it looks pretty damn concrete. It isn't until the final episodes when you see him that you realize "Holy Crap, he's survived!"

He married that girl he met on the ship, I believe, and that's who he had the kid with.

Yep. The last you see of him is that he's been shot, he's bleeding, but he pushes back the levers that would have separated the Claudia Unit from the ship. His girl (cannot recall her name) comes into the room, calling his name, and we see him slumped over the levers, unmoving... and she comes back out of the room, sits down, and begins to cry. And that's IT for Mullin, until the very end... when there he is!

I almost think he was supposed to die, but at the last minute someone decided that it was too much to kill Dio AND Alex AND Mullin, so they saved him.

I'm still kinda tweaked over Dio and Luciola's deaths... for instance, what the heck was that with Luciola? He goes utterly ballet badass, beats the Queen's personal bodyguard singlehandedly... then takes a ring from her finger, begs for Dio's freedom, and disintegrates? WTF was that?!!

And so then poor Dio dies insane, thinking he ordered his friend to jump out of the plane so he could win a race. What an utter pisser.

The Anime Unleashed version of anime is edited for times. The fact that Mullin lived was cut out of the TV version.

There's a reason I hate how they edit, can you guess?

Girl's name was Dounia Scheer, btw. Though the spelling might be a bit off :p

I assume this was shown during extended end credits?

For some dumb reason AU absolutely refuses to use original show credits in any circumstance.

I was told there's a bunch of extra stuff during the end credits of the final Gad Guard as well, showing reunions and what happened to a couple characters you were left curious about.
