Other than EC Comics "Piracy" (Which I've already got a complete set of in reprint) can y'all recommend me some good Pirate and Dinosaur comics?

I like Pirates and Dinosaurs too!
Quality did the short series "Buccaneer". Hillman Periodicals did "Pirate Comics". Black Swan did "Pirate Tales" a few years back. As far as Dino comics, that depends on your taste. I will assume you prefer the "New" look Dinosaurs as opposed to the Classic but silly dinos of yesterday. Marvel comics "Dinosaurs a celebration". Dark Horse did "Age of reptiles", (a series told in pictures only). Kitchen Sink did "Xenozoic Tales", (Fantastic comic series.) Did I forget anything?

Leave us not forget the original Dell Turok, Son of Stone. Dinosaurs a'plenty. The covers are often beautiful.

"I was getting to that one! I am CYCLOPS, reader of the comics, collector of the issues, taper of the baggies. Tremple before my knowledge of alpha-numerical order."
I really wanted to mention Turok, For "old school dinosaurs", I don't think there is a better title. Wally Wood's dinos have been a favorite of mine. The ones that he would draw in Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. Can anyone think of anymore pirate or dino comics?

Great Dinosaur Comic Series:
-- "The War That Time Forgot" by Robert Kanigher, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito in STAR SPANGLED WAR STORIES
-- TOR by Joe Kubert
-- KONA, MONARCH OF MONSTER ISLE by Don Segall and Sam Glanzman
-- TUROK, SON OF STONE (Dell)
Check out ODDBALL COMICS' Archives for many, many more. I REALLY love dinosaur and gorilla comics!
But for dinosaurs AND pirates, check out RANGE RED by Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman. I forget the publisher, who only published a single (thick) issue of this continued story a few years ago, but it's about a masked cowboy hero who's African-American, the Ku Klux Klan, dinosaurs, the Sargasso Sea...and pirates. It's like a huge stack of pulp magazines compressed into one great funnybook. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Scott!

Don't forget these funnybook series that actually STARRED dinosaurs:
-- Charlton's GORGO
-- Charlton's REPTILICUS (re-titled REPTISAURUS THE TERRIBLE when the movie license wasn't renewed)
-- Marvel and Dark Horse's GODZILLA
-- Stephen Bissette's TYRANT
-- DINOSAURS FOR HIRE
And, of course, the Oddest of 'em all...
-- Marvel's DEVIL DINOSAUR, by Jack Kirby!
Aloha,
Scott!
P.S.: Just thought of another: Fantagraphics' DINOSAUR REX by Jan Strnad and my pal Hank Mayo. -- SS!

One more dino-rific book that's a bit more recent is Gon — a Japanese series that's been reprinted in the US. It's wordless and very funny, and the artwork is fantastic.

There's an issue of the Marvel line Epic's Timespirits that features...that's right...DINOSAUR PIRATES!!! I think it's #6 or 7, but it's been so long since I read them, I'm not sure. The whole series is well worth the read, though (and only seven issues long).

Timespirits!!!! Although I never read the series, a good friend (Henry) loved this title. If Henry liked it, it has to be good! He knew good comics when he saw them. Thanks so much for this addition, Paradox.

What's that supposed to mean? I bet it's insulting. If only I was intelligent enough to be offended, There would be so much to answer for. You better hope, nobody explains this to me. This is the "Pacific Northwest", victims have rights you know.

Wow! Thanks guys!
Man. I can't believe I've never read a copy of Devil Dinosaur. I love every other seventies Kirby book that I've read..
I haven't read TOR either, an' Joe Kubert's probably my favorite comics artist in the history of ever, if I hadta pick just one.
I remember KONA showing up in Oddball Comics a couple'o times. I think I've got an issue or two somewhere, but I haven't read them.
I didn't know so many companies did Pirate comics. Hillman? What the heck is a Hillman?
I have a definite feeling that Dinosaurs for Hire is the greatest comic ever. And, of course I'm e-baying Timespirits right now, though it could be too much of a good thing.
I HAVE read and liked some of the modern ones. Gon is awesome (An' I usually don't get/like Manga) Xenozoic Tales just got reprinted, and I've got a copy of Tyrant around here... somewhere.
Edit: And if anyone sees 'em... I thought the recent, Black and White "Scurvy Dogs" was hillarious. And there's pirates a-plenty in the equally funny "My Monkey's Name is Jennifer."
I've ALSO got a Complete collection of Every appearance by Stegron the Dinosaur Man, who's probably my favorite Marvel comics character, ever.

If you like pirates -- and aren't easily offended -- you've GOTTA check out S. Clay Wilson's "Cap'n Pissgums And His Pervert Pirates" in ZAP COMIX and various other underground publications. And don't miss the story in which a modern-day outlaw biker gang travels through a time-warp and ends up on the deck of Cap'n Pissgums' frigate!
Filthy but funny stuff, it deserves an "Arrr" rating, at the very least!

I wrote Timespirits, and the dino-pirates story was in #4. Al Williamson and Steve Bissette also did Dinos in that issue , and I wrote the stories to play against the strengths of the artists -- Al's dinos were always my favorites. John Tottleben's dino-pirates (in the story Pirate Love) were really done by Yeates, with Tots inking. You might be interested to know Timespirits is coming back -- we've just agreed to a GN reprint deal with Vanguard.

I have TimeSpirits # 4 "on-order" with all the local dealers, but no luck so far. I wanted to do a bit on dinosaurs and pirates for Cronin's blog (goodcomics.blogspot.com) and this would be a shoo-in for a featured spot.
I DID find the Zap comics ish that Scott mentions. Hillarious! And I'm glad to find pirate and dinosaur work in the less-mainstream black 'n white books. The only other one I've found pre 1990 is Love and Rockets # 1.

Hey! Found Timespirits # 4!
Not a-half-a-clue what's going on in the story, ever, but the art was uniformly beautiful. And, hey, Dinosaur Pirates. (If there's one thing I love more than anything else in this world....)
So now I've got the REST of the series on order...

Y'know, when I think pirates and dinosaurs, I think ACG. That company published a BUNCH of stories that featured both pirates and dinosaurs, in titles like Forbidden Worlds, Adventures into the Unknown and Unknown Worlds. At least that's what I remember...Scott S! will have to back me up on this since most of the ACGs I read as a kid are long gone.

The Black Pirate was a back-up feature in Action Comics, Sensation Comics, and All-American Comics during the 1940s. Captain Fear is another pirate hero from DC Comics who has made a couple of appearances since his debut in 1972. Walter Simonson illustrated a Captain Fear story that is included in The Art of Walter Simonson trade paperback. Hawks of the Sea was a comic strip drawn by Will Eisner in the 1930s that has been collected as a hardcover.

I just got the Hawks of the Sea trade from E-bay today. Beautiful, oversize book.
Anyone know if this was actually IN papers, or what?
I'm also noticing that there's an edition of the same book on Amazon that's different from mine, published by Dark Horse for cheaper. Is THAT oversize? Should I be mad I paid 22 bucks for the D and Q edition from '86?
Edit: 'Nother question. Do ALL the Timespirits books have Dinosaurs?
Edit: Question 2: If I buy volume 2 of Cadilacs and Dinosaurs, will I be lost? They have it at 30 % off at one of my local comic shops.

"Hawks of the Sea" question; Sorry, I've only read the 86' edition.
"Do all Timespirits have Dinos?; Although I have not seen this series for years, I think it was just issue#4.
"Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" question; If my memory serves me
correctly, "Xenoxoic Tales" by Kitchen Sink first published the story in B&W. Shultz drew the art for this format. "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" was the name of the animated TV cartoon, and the Marvel Epic line of Kitchen Sink reprints with color added. This comic series (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) is a great example of why I like to own the stories printed as they were originally intended. The color seriously muddies the art. So I can't recommend this comic version.

Topps Comics had a series of Jurassic Park mini series that it ran, starting with the official movie adaption that featured art by Gil Kane and George Perez. They were fairly raptor heavy, content wise, which was the craze at the time.
While not classic, it was pointed out to me recently that Mitch Byrd (artist from Guy Gardner: Warrior) has a webcomic which features alot of dino heavy content. In fact there's a neat series of pages of various theories on how they would move and what their anatomy would be. I can't post a link though do to some of the content (read: nudity) of some of the other pages in the series.
Pirates on the other hand seem harder to come across, especially nowadays, the only one I'm aware of is the One Piece manga.

Bah. Raptors. The "hot" dinosaurs of the early nineties; Nowhere near as cool as the old standbys like Parasaurolophus and Ankylosaurus.
Still, I *do* love Gil Kane. I'll see if I can find these in th' cheap box.

I'll do a google search sometime, if I'm bored. I'm really not much for webcomics, but if these end up published on real paper, I'd happily plop down the cash.

Actually...
There's been a BUNCH of independent Pirate books in the last five years. Scurvy Dogs (Ait/Planetar) El Caza...something (Crossgen) Dead Men Tell No Tales (Arcanum? Arcana? Something like that.) Sea of Red (Image) Polly and the Pirates (Oni) Pirate Club (Slave Labor, I think) none of these are super huge sellers or anything, so they're easy to miss. Unless you're activelly looking for Pirate Comics.
Like me.
What makes me mad is the absolute dearth of Dinosaur comics lately. The ONLY one I've picked up in the last year was Marvel's Devil Dinosaur one shot.
the only one I'm aware of is the One Piece manga.
Heey. They've got this in my school library. Nice. Thanks for the tip.

Scurvy Dogs I've heard of, but I think alot of those must've passed by me by, admittedly. Especially the Cross Gen stuff which I didn't pay much attention to after being really disappointed with the initial titles I had picked up from them.

For some reason Dino stuff seemed more prevelant to me, but I think that may be through recent back issue digging or picking up alot of Akira Toriyama stuff as of late, who's done alot of dino illustrations (mostly as background stuff or sight gags though).
Heey. They've got this in my school library. Nice. Thanks for the tip.

Well I should point out that it's loose in it's interpretation of pirates, being largely an action-comedy manga, many are really quirky in some way or another and have a power of some sort. The lead is a mix of Plastic Man and Goku from Dragonball and his crew (as well as the enemies) are all fairly off-beat. It does has a reoccuring theme about the strength of friendship though, and I personally rather like it alot. One of my favorite manga presently.

If you're refering to what I think you are, that's not actually a comic but a collection of "fantasy art" illustrations by various contributors put out by SQP. There's a whole series of them featuring various angles such as vampires, dragons, cave women, jungle themes, pirates and the like.

Neat. I'm buying some of those.
Had somemore good P & D aquisitions in the last few days.
From the Fifty Cent Bin: The Man Thing (Second Series) # 8 which had Pirates right on the cover, Classic Comics Treasure Island, and Devil Dinosaur # 6.
Three bucks for... er.. some Epic Comic that I forget the name of. It's in the car. And 1.50 for a Reprint of Two Fisted Tales # 2 that I didn't even know had a Pirate story when I bought it!
(Anyone know which other E.C. comics have Pirate stories? Besides "Piracy," of course.)
And an unheard of (at least for me) Ten bucks for Zap Comics Number 10, which started with a Dinosaur story and ENDED with a Pirate story, making this one of only TWO Pirate & Dinosaur comics in my collection. (Both of which are awesome, BTW. $$ Well spent.)

Are you aware of a 1951 movie called Two Lost Worlds (http://imdb.com/title/tt0043080/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9dHdvIG xvc3Qgd29ybGRzfGZ0PTF8bXg9MjB8bG09NTAwfGNvPTF8aHRt bD0xfG5tPTE_;fc=1;ft=23), that features pirates and dinosaurs? The good news is, it can be had on DVD for very little. The bad news is, the dinosaurs appear for only two or three minutes near the end of the picture. (As noted under Trivia, the dinos are stock footage from 1940's One Million B.C..) James Arness is the lead actor.
