The Tarot from The Hellions, this chick...

http://classicmarvel.com/cast/tarot.htm

I once heard, in this forum, that she could summon an extremely powerful incarnation of death or some such. Just kind of caught my attention, a really obscure, powerful character. That kind of thing usualy does it for me. So, can someone elaborate, and could she do anything else that was impressive?

Long time ago, I can't remember the Death-summon, but I do remember her summoning a demonic slave with a chain. The chain wrapped around Illyana and turned her slowly in a demon as well (it seemed unrelated to Illyana's own demonic-part.)

Apart from that, she turned up again with the New Hellions and she could predict the future with her tarot-cards.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. I've been reading a lot of New Mutants lately. :)

I recall her summoning death when fighting the new warriors, I recall it was able to fight Nova on equal terms. Though my memory of such is hazy.

Actually, Tarot summoned an image of the Devil, who snared Dani with his chain. He slowly transformed her into a demon. Illyana freed Dani with her Soul Sword, but was attacked by the Knight of Swords. The Knight's steed nearly kicked off Illyana's head, but she escaped with Dani into Limbo.

You have a scan of the Tarot turning Dani into a demon thing?

sounds... interesting.

Unfortunately, no, although I have the issue. However, it's not hard to find in back-issue bins at comic books stores.

Tarot's demon enslaved Mirage & corrupted her. As a result, Illyana horrified her friend seemingly become a demon summons her Soulsword & frees Mirage. Magik then destroys Tarot's demon & the psychic backlash causes Tarot to become unconscious. Magik & Mirage flee to Limbo while the New Mutants become Hellions (sort of).

Tarot turned Dani into a demon? When was that?

The New Mutants #15-17 (first appearance of the Hellions. The White Queen attempts to subvert Kitty & the New Mutants to become Hellions. Mirage & Magik help save the New Mutants from the White Queen. The X-Men were away on the Beyonder's planet during "The Secret Wars" at this time; therefore, the New Mutants had to save Kitty & Doug from the White Queen & the Hellfire Club!)

i always wondered about tarot...
her mutant power revolved around a deck of cards...
like, how did she even know she was a mutant before that?
was she playing around with a deck of tarot cards and...BAM they came to life?
was she mysteriously drawn to a deck of them?
did her mutant power manifest the cards along with her powers at puberty?
how many other people in the marvel universe could be mutants and not even know it because there power revolved around obscure items? like what if some random guy has the power to turn carburetors for '82 cadillac devilles into incredible weapons of mass destruction but he never found out because he never dealt with one?
maybe im thinking about it too much, lol...

Bwhaaah. :D

Well, with Tarot, it seems she's always been into the mystical. Maybe the cards are to focus her powers. Who knows.

The White Queen is disturbed that Tarot allows her cards to rule her life. Tarot can't seem to make a decision without consulting her tarot cards.

did her fascination with the mystical lead her powers to develop that way or did her powers revolving around tarot cards lead to her being fascinated with mystical things?
hmm?

She also uses a scythe. Her power isnt that helpful on the battlefield. She almost killed Proudstar with it.

maybe im thinking about it too much, lol...Like other mystical-based mutants (Scarlet Witch for instance) Tarot's power has to do with the magic involved. It just so happens that the cards are the catalyst for the magic involved. With enough training I imagine she'd be able to call fort the embodiments of the tarot figures without the cards.

i believe it just manifested mystically because of her surroundings.much like roulette and her casino owning father.

The original Hellions were foils to the New Mutants:

White Queen: Professor X
Thunderbird: Sunspot
Empath: Mirage
Tarot: Magik
Catseye: Wolfsbane
Roulette:
Jetstream: Cannonball
:Magma
:Warlock
:Cypher
:Karma

Magik's Soulsword disrupts Tarot's mystical tarot creatures; therefore, Tarot's power, in part, is mutant sorcery. The White Queen founded her mutants, Hellions, with the stolen Cerebro technology when Warhawk bugged the X-Men's mansion in Uncanny X-Men #110. This laid the groundwork for Emma Frost's own mutant students to offset Xavier's New Mutants. Eventually, the White Queen copied Xavier's original danger room & Cerebro for her Massachusettes Academy. The White Queen never copied the Shi'ar enhanced Danger Room though...

I guess she was just one of those who went slowly into the night, quietly.

I hope that Tarot retained her powers after M-Day. She could appear as a neutral character (sometimes good sometimes bad).

The scythe came when she took the mantle of Death. The Tarot Arcana is the reason why she is alive, though it is unknown why or how it brought her back to life, though it has been speculated that King Bedlam had some involvement in that.

Back to the Scythe, she assumed the position of something on her card. This had potential to be really powerful. I mean, with the demon she summoned with the chain of corruption, imagine if she took the mantle of the devil itself and used the chain, etc. From what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong, instead of projecting what's on the card, she could have the characteristics of what's on it. It explains her death card and the scythe, and her actually becoming death, in a sense.

It's a shame a character like her went to waste, though she could easily come back if Marvel decided to tie her powers more to magic over the mutant gene instead. It could make for interesting stories.
