I was reading the JLA Classified issues and it dawned on me that Guy Gardner was supposed to have died in the Our Worlds At War wankfest.

Like everybody else that dies in the DCU, Guy got better.

How was that explained?

Or am I mistaken with one of the many deaths that have been greatly exaggerrated?

Thanks,
- Brian

I think the official explanation was something like "Guy's powers did something weird to keep him alive".

The real explanation is, I believe, that Guy kept turning up after his supposed death, most likely due to communication SNAFU, and so his death was basically ignored.

Didn't he return from his afterlife in one of the Superman issues after OWAW? I think he was guarding a portal or something like that, and I think Kancer had something to do with it.

you are correct. he was trapped in hell i believe. he basically had to trick Kancer to take his place. it was rumored i believe at the time that Gardner was gonna turn bad because he was saying stuff like he was abandoned and left to die during owaw. also i thought the original premise for the current super-buddies arc in JLA unclassified was for the team to go to hell to rescue guy.

IIRC it was in an issue of "Action", where Superman travelled to the underworld and somehow rescued/restored Guy.

I only remember because the final page had Superman and Guy in their boardshorts on a tropical beach somewhere sipping drinks, and for the life of me I can't remember why that was a part of the story, but it was :).

Guy in Hell? Can I get an issue number on that? It fits nicely into an overall meta-essay I'm working on about recurring instances of Green Lanterns (or former Green Lanterns) being seen in some version of Hell.

It was issue 789 and 790 :)

Pretty sure the intention was always to rescue Ice -- the story idea has been discussed, at one level or another, by Giffen for a while now.
