View Full Version : Am I too old for a mature readers title?

I just turned 35 and not one of you sent a card!

For shame!

some other excuse to use an exclamation mark!

I haven't read a decent comic book for a long time, at the moment I'm rereading reprints from the 1970's.

Am I just a moaning git?

OK, so an upper age limit on mature titles sounds a little non-sensical but I was really turned off Vertigo by the revamped Swamp Thing, 100 Bullets, Y the last Man (Y me I say, Y me!), and really the output for the last couple of years.

Tell me how old you intend to get before retiring your comics habit and swapping them for a pipe and slippers? (unless you are politically opposed to pies and/or slippers)

Probably not an age issue, just that the stuff Vertigo publishes isn't to your tastes.

I am not so sure if its an age thing but a taste thing. I only read one vertigo book right now and that is Hellblazer. Been reading it since issue 1.
As for the other books yes, I pick a few but I am becoming more and more choosy on what I read. I like fun comics and well written comics. I don't read every book written by one author though but tend to give them a chance.

I'll let you all in on a plot point.

I changed jobs last year, and whereas I used to walk past seven comic shops every day as part of my job, for my new one, I don't.

It has meant going from 20 to 5 titles a month, a large drop in my spending, and a weeks holiday in Turkey next month.

Comics? Turkey? Comics? Turkey?

How does a boy decide?

You were turned off by Alan Moore's Swamp Thing?

Just pack it in Gramps. ;)

I'm with you, brother. Turkey sounds like fun, and I don't read comics on the beach. I've been known to prefer jazz CDs, DVDs, or just stuff like paying the mortgage and eating to comics. If you're not enjoying yourself, better to spend the money on something else and check back later!

I think he is talking about the Andy Diggle one. Still, the same answer applies.

Absolutely. You're never too old to find something you enjoy.

Diggle's Swamp Thing turned me off.

Hey Dom has your buying really gone down so much because your route to work changed. Wish I could say the same mate, really wish I could.

Y The Last Man is the only Vertigo title I'm currently buying in issue form. But I continue to buy multiple series in TPB form. Very good Vertigo backlist.

As for new "mature" titles, try Ex Machina from Wildstorm.

I'm a building surveyor, I used to work for westminster council and the patch I covered was charing cross road, oxford street, shaftesbury avenue, so I was up and down those streets every day, now I work for southwark and cover the Elephant & Castle! not a single comic shop to be seen - I've taken to reading the Panini reprints in the news-agents!
