I just got hooked on Fables. I went out and got all the tpb's and the 3 issues that brings me up to speed. I am loving it. Though I was wondering if anyone has a good site to resurce the more obscure fables like Baba Yaga and some of the others that Blue talks about in "last castle"?

Welcome to the club. Post on some of the threads concerning the Adversary. Fun to be had for all.

Fables: Into the Woods (http://mean-seasons.org/fables/). ;)That's the first time I visited that site since it got redesigned.
It's a creative design, but giving it only a 1x2 inch viewable frame for the all the contents of the site makes it highly impractical and a pain. UGGHHHH!!!!

Because above all else, websites should be practical, right?

Only if you're amazon or some other e-commerce site.

I think the site is awesome, and its layout ties in very nicely with the literary overtones of Fables.

Plus, the info stored within is top shelf.

Typically it causes carpel tunnel syndrome, but I used to get shoulder strain until I learned to take breaks. It happens with repetitive motions and when you sit in front of the computer 10 hours a day.

That sucks. I work at a computer 8 hours a day, and I'm fine.

Perhaps you need a new mouse.

The site is best when view with 800x600 resolutions, as it says on the front page. If you're using that resolution, this is no longer a problem.

A lot of people aren't going to want to change their resolution for just one site, but I like the design, so whatever. If you like it you like it, if not you don't need to go back.

But it is one of the few (maybe three in all) Fables websites out there.

I just wondering if the Fables exsisted before the stories or if our stories created them? Has anyone have any thoughts on this?

There is obviously some connection, as it's stated as why Goldilocks and Snow don't die from clearly fatal injuries, but whether the connection extends to mundy stories creating the Fables? You'd have to ask Bill.

I'm on my way getting into it. I bought all the monthlies, only #1 and 2 I have yet to find......yes, I much prefer monthlies over trades and I got all those issues for very good prices...read, almost cover price (mail order, some costs there). I kept reading about how good this series was and the premise sounds too good not to pick up this series. So I did...now those 2 issues, they will come along somewhere.

I've got to agree. I just read the first two TPBs and wanted a little insight into some of the characters.

The design looks good - but you can't use it. There were some parts of it where the background didn't load correctly and I had to highlight the text to read it. Plus that tiny area ... sorry, professional designer got off on a rant.

Anyway, read the first two trades and LOVE the series so far. I've even got my wife reading it. How many trades are available now? And how much of a gap is there between the last TPB and the most current single issue?

The following trades are out with the issues collected in them:
Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile (#1-5)
Fables Vol 2: Animal Farm (#6-10)
Fables Vol 3: Storybook Love (#11-18)
Fables Vol 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers (#19-21, 23-27, Last Castle GN)
Fables Vol 5: The Mean Seasons (#22, 28-33)

#37 is the current issue out this month.

I don't expect Vol. 6 to be out until some time after the summer, hopefully in the Fall.

I just read #37 this afternoon and I must say I am loving the current story line with Blue. Why didn't anyone tell me about Bill Willingham earlier?!? :)

This book sounds interesting. I'm new to Vertigo ( mostly because of my arch enemy ). Do you guys mind giving me a brief explaination on what it's about - or why you like it?

Well Fables centers around a large group of "fictional" characters who live in modern day New York who were driven from their lands (the Fable Lands, such as Narnia, Oz etc.) by a person known only as the Emperor. We don't as yet know who this person is but there is wild speculation and we should find out this story arc.

The main characters can be any "fable" in the public domain, which is alot such as Snow White, Old King Cole, the three little pigs etc. It's hard to explain really just pick up the first trade and see if you like.

An aside: Was the Snow Queen in the last issue supposed to be Jadis, the White Witch? I couldn't remember her being called Snow Queen but she may have been.

I thought she was the Snow Queen from the Hans Christian Anderson story; the same one Kay is from.

As another aside; I seem to remember during the wooden soldiers invasion, they made mention of Baba Yaga as the emperor's first lady but now with the appearance of the Snow Queen...I wonder if she supplanted Baba Yaga or if she was always the 2nd under the Adversary.

Fables is one of the few titles that has never had a bad issue. There are story arcs I prefer over others and some of the "fill-in" arcs and artists haven't been quite as good as the main arcs, but Willingham and Buckingham ("the 'hams") consistently put out a great story. The characters, based on fables from around the world, are all interesting and well-realized, even though the book has a fairly large cast.

I prefer to read in trade, but I buy the monthlies and then buy the trades when they come out and pass the monthly issues on. I'd LIKE to see an Absolute Fables, but I doubt that is going to happen.

Twenty years ago, I was a big fan of Willingham's edgy Elementals comic. But I felt that nearly every issue that crossed over with his fantasy Ironwood setting was lousy. And when Elementals vol. 2 came along, it had a much larger cast, so the series lost that sense of realistic character development. That's why I've been wary of trying Fables, despite the good things I've been hearing.

On a side note, I was a fan of Willingham before he even started writing and drawing comics. He wrote a fantastic two-part adventure for the Villains & Vigilantes superhero rpg, including some decent artwork, and he even ran a V&V adventure set in the Marvel Universe at GenCon '82. It was Avengers versus some souped-up Skrulls posing as the Fantastic Four, Spider-man, Daredevil, Captain Marvel, and the Hulk. I got to play Hawkeye, and I caused the Skrull spaceship to crash land when I shot some blast arrows at "Daredevil" and "Mr. Fantastic" in the control room.

Well, we're 37 issues in and still going strong -- how's that for a track record? It's true that the character focus has shifted a bit as other characters are starting to come forward (Prince Charming, Beauty, Beast, Boy Blue), but the strong development is still there.

Yeah, just don't bother with his work on Robin. How a person can be so good on one comic and so bad on another I'll never understand.

I picked up the first trade of Fables a few weeks ago on a whim. I loved it so much that I bought vol. 2-5 the week after. This is easily one of the best comics on the market.
