Legends of Green Lantern : " In Brightest Day " Pt. 7#

The sun rose slowly over the planet OA. The recruits and the teachers slept In a good slumber. Guy Gardner was having a relaxing dream of himself and Ice at a picnic. Then as he moved towards her , she morphed Into John Stewart !


" Aghhhhh !! " Guy screamed as he woke as John stood over him shaking.

" Stewart , you had better had a good damn reason to do that . " Guy said as he regained his composure. The 2 Green Lanterns had an awkward moment as Guy stood ...wearing just his General Glory PJ's.


" You actually wear those when you sleep ? " John asked as he shook his head In shock.


" My sleep wear should make little differance to you , Johnny. Again why are you In my room wakin me like this ?" Guy asked as his uniform popped on.

" Guardians spotted some Qwardian warships headed toward us ! Thier mobilizing us all. Looks like a huge battles gonna go down . " John said as Guy jumped excited.

" Now your damn well talkin ! Lets go kick some Sinestro ass. Wheres Jordan ? " Guy asked as he walked ahead.


" He's coming. The Guardians are getting as many GL Members as they can. Guy , theres also some more bad news . " John Stewart said as Guy stopped.


" What more bad news ? We've beaten those punks before. We'll beat em again , Stewart . " Guy said.

" Thier not alone. The Manhunters are with them as well. The 2 have joined up. Looks like were out numbered. " John said as Guy wiped a tear from his eye.


" Dear lord.....I love these odds. Come on Stewart , lets wake up the recruits so we can at least hold these guys back ! " Guy said as he ran off excited.

That dude Is just Insane. Why Is he a Green Lantern ? Maybe Its because he has no fear. Or he's brain damaged. Best I get everyone up , John thought as he followed.

Deep Space:

Steve Jones shot thru space using his ring as a map to try and get home. Coming towards him but not noticing him was Hal Jordan as he spotted Steve flying alone.

" Hey , what the- " Steve started as Hal created a grapple and pully to wheel Steve back by his leg.

" Where you going ? You could get lost out here , young man . " Hal said as he stood there.

" Yeah , like you'd care ! The only reason I'm on OA Is because I'm a danger to people. This whole " Training " deal was a sham ! You and your Guardians are liars. " Steve said as he blasted Hal knocking him Into a meteor.

" Ughhh , kid listen to me. We only did It for your own good. " Hal said as he wrapped Steve In a green cocoon.

" Stuff It. You could have told me the truth. Is It that hard to tell ? That I'm carrying a bomb on my hand ? " Steve said as he glowed and blew the cocoon open.

He's gotten better with the ring. This Is gonna be hard. How do I beat him without hurting him , Hal thought.


Hal didn't have time to think of an option when a big green head appeared as It shocked Steve. The 2 stopped thier battle long enough to listen.


Hal Jordan , we need you to come to OA. It Is an emergeny. The Manhunters and Qwardians have joined forces and are attacking the planet. We need you to come Green Lantern of sector 2814 !


The face slowly dissolved as Steve stood In shock. The 2 looked at each other as Hal floated over slowly. Hal Jordan realized he would need to try and help Steve regardless If the young man wanted It or not.

" Look Steve , I know I may have said some things. And didn't admit the truth. For that I am sorry. But right now we have a planet thats gonna be under siege soon. I need to get back there. " Hal said as he started to take off.

" Hold up. Look the reason this Is happening Is me. I want to help . " Steve said as he patted Hal on the shoulder.

" Sinestro , may try and get you. If he makes you remove the ring you may blow up . There are no guarentees about this kind of job we have. I've seen many die before thier time. " Hal said as he looked sternly at the young man before him.

" I'll stay away from him ok. How many Green Lanterns are on the planet ? " Steve asked.

" Counting us 2 , theres about 73 . " Hal said.

" I thought there were over 3,700 G.L's In the Universe. " Steve replied as the 2 flew off.

" Thier all away at the moment guarding their sectors. I'm sure Ganthlet and the others are trying to reach them. Were gonna be outnumbered In this. " Hal said as the 2 flew back.

" You scared ? " Steve asked as he looked over at him.

" Everytime I use this ring. But when we get there don't think except about the job at hand , kid. Just act and don't ever sit back to let that fear grab you. " Hal said as the 2 dissapeared Into the distance.

Qwardian Warship:


Sinestro stood and paced as he saw OA come Into view. The Guardians home planet wasn't going to be at full strength and with a combined assult , Sinestro figured the Green Lanterns would fall.

" Lord Sinestro , we have came Into range of the planet. The Manhunters wish to attack In the 1st wave . " Orthello said as he walked up.

" Let them , Orthello. You will attack while I find that Earth child. We must try and remove the Power Battery. " Sinestro said.

" Yes , Lord. The Corps may keep thier defenses up there. " Orthello said.

" Then make sure you remove It , Orthello. I go to end this battle with the Guardians once and for all ! " Sinestro said as he walked off the deck of the ship. Orthello stood and shook his head as even he wondered If they could beat the Green Lantern Corps not at full strength.

Back on OA , Kilowog was busy waking and getting his section of recruits ready. He realized that they would be facing thier 1st big real test as Green Lanterns. And even he wondered how they would do against the odds facing them.


" Is this all of them ? " Guy asked as he stood and smiled.

" I couldn't find , Jones. The kid musta ran off. I knew he may have heard us , Guy. Awful nice of you layin It out like that . " Kilowog said.

" Kid , Is the reason Sinestroi's attackin us like this. We gotta thank our lucky stars we won't have him to worry about . " Gardner said as he took off to get his recruits ready as well.

" Ya know...he's a jerk. " Kilowog said.

" Yeah , but he's our jerk . " John said.

" You think he'll ever change ? " Kilowog asked.

" Guy change ? That'll be the day. I can see him still being like this as an old Guy . " John said as the 2 shared a small chuckle and turned thier attention towards the Invasion coming.

Space 25 minute later:

Steve Jones and Hal Jordan flew Into OA's range as they saw sparks flying and the ships firing. Green Lanterns were busy fighting and Steve saw that a few had been Injured or worse.

" I'll take care of the yellow ships , Steve. I've had experince here. You get to the ground and help em down on the planet . " Hal said as he zoomed In as Steve watched him.

The ships started to fire missles as Hal took them and made them follow him ! He then directed them back Into each other as they would explode as Hal started to get the young recruits to listen to his game plan.

Steve shot towards the ground and landed as Kilowog was busy holding off an army of robotic Manhunters. Steve cannonballed thru them clearing a small path as he landed by his alien teacher.

" Knew ya'd come back , Steve. Hal with you ?" Kilowog asked.

" He's up In space taking care of the warships. " Steve said as Kilowog smiled.

" Ohhh yeah , we got Hal with us. Were gonna win this battle. " He replied as the 2 took off and started taking car of the robots.

Steve's mind was busy fighting as he kept trying to force them back. Kilowog and John Stewart were busy roping and demolsihing them as the battle waged.

During this time as the huge battle waged a yellow energy force blasted Steve hard . The blow knocked Steve across and away from Kilowog and the others.

His eyes groggy as he shook his head , Steve looked up to see a Qwardian soldier ready to bring his weapons sharp knife down on him. In an quick Instant Steve blinded him and used his hand to hand fighting he had learned from Kilowog to take the soldier down.

Steve wiped his bloody mouth and noticed his uniform was ripped a bit. Unknown to him Sinestro stood a cliff above him and watched as the young man stood.

Sinestro flew down and with barely a word , piledrived him Into the OA ground. He then picked Steve up and upper cutted him Into some OA buildings.

" You may call me.....SINESTRO. But Its a shame you'll never get to tell your children and grand children you met me. " he replied as he cooly floated In.

" Uhhgghh .." Steve said as he slowly climbed to his feet. Nose bleeding as he felt every bump and bruise thus far.

" Your trying. Well I don't like beating children before I kill them. So lets end this ok. " He said as he grabbed Steve by his throat and held him up In the air.

In Space :


Hal Jordan was busy using other ways like astroids and rocks to destroy the Qwardian ships. The last one he blew a huge hole In and floated In.

" Sinestro ! Show yourself . " Hal declared as he stood.

Orthello realizing he really couldn't beat one of the greatest Green Lanterns by now , gave up easily. The other recruits scanned each ship with no trace of him.

" Where Is he , Qwardian ? Where Is your leader ? " Hal asked.

" He Is on OA, Hal Jordan. He plans to destroy the Power Battery by using the Earth Child's created Green Lantern ring . " Orthello said as Hal took off like a bolt .

The recruits took the other Qwardians Into custody one by one as Orthello even wondered If maybe Sinestro had won by this time.

OA:

Sinestro had found Steve and he had pretty much thrashed him In battle. Now he held him up by his throat as Steve tried to get his brain to stop rolling.

" Such a pity. They tried training you. But what do they expect ? The Corps thought Hal Jordan could replace me. Really , do you think he could actually replace the greatest Green Lantern ever ? " Sinestro bragged.


" Y..You were a Green L..Lantern ?" Steve coughed as he tried to breath.


" Yes. I was the best ! They tossed me aside like I was rubbish. But I was the one who did more. I was the one who trained and made Jordan decent enough to carry the ring he wears ! They used me . " Sinestro said as Steve's mind raced.

" Heh....your just an egomaniac. " Steve coughed as he created a green mask over Sinestro's mouth and nose as the evil villain dropped his hold on him.

He fell as he gritted his teeth. More bruises as he tried to stand but by then Sinestro had removed the mouth and nose guard and used a yellow created battering ram to blast him thru several walls.

" Now Its time to end this game , Child. I am sorry you won't see what your sacrifce will do for me. " Sinestro smiled as he grabbed at Steve's ring.

Hal Jordan had flew In as he watched Sinestro go for the ring. He flew faster than ever as the ring slowly came off as sweat poured from a beaten down Steve's face.

Sinestro pulled It finally as he stood and looked around. No huge explosoion ...no nothing! He put It on and off over and over as he started to growl In anger as Hal looked on In shock.

" How ? I set this...there Is no way It shouldn't have not exploded !! " Sinestro yelled. Steve's sour eye opened as he smiled.


" Now I can tell my grand kids I used my WILLPOWER to stop a bomb from detoning ! " He said In pain as Sinestro tossed him outta the building.


" You could eithor go and save that Earth child , Jordan. Or you can try and saty and fight me. But I'm thinking he won't survive another hard landing In his shape. " Sinestro said as he smiled.

" Damn you ! One day were gonna end this game , Sinestro. " Hal said as he took off after Steve. He caught up to him and pulled him In as he landed.

By the time Hal Jordan had gotten back to the main part of OA , the battles were over. Most of the Manhunters and Qwardians had been captured and everyone seemed to celebrate.

" Say It people ! Who's the best ? Thats right damn It. Guy Gardner told ya all , we'd win. Because thats how we do It as Green Lanterns ! " he yelled as John shook his head.

" Hal , Is he ..." John started as Steve was helped Inside.

Later :

A very soar , Steve Jones woke up In his bed as Hal Jordan and others stood there. His head was bandaged and his nose and mouth had stopped bleeding finally.

" Uhhh so...we win ?" Steve asked.

" Yep. We pretty much won the moment Sinestro removed your ring and no explosion happened. So ....you gonna explain that ?" Hal asked.

" Guess It was " Willpower " . I kept thinking of dismanting the fuse Inside the ring. I pretty much kept thinking It and well...my ring no longer works. So I guess I fixed It all . " Steve said.

" That you did. Look you get some rest and we'll see about getting you back home. " Hal said as Steve closed his eyes.


Epilogue: Earth a week later:

On the roof of a New York apartment building Steve Jones sits and watches as birds fly by. A figure walks up and opens the door as Hal Jordan slowly walks over.

" You ok , Steve ?' Hal asked as he was dressed In an Air Force uniform.

" Thanks to you. Look I guess I should thank you for coming and helping covering me with that story of being a Airforce recruiter. Helped ease my parents minds a bit . " Steve said.

" Well , we do owe you. I'm sorry we mislead you , Steve. The Green Lantern Corps Is something that most kids shouldn't be Involved In. You've seen the type of evil we face and the battles that some can walk away from . " Hal said as he patted Steve on the shoulder.

" Yeah i know. But I'll miss It , Hal. You know what was the best part ? " Steve asked.

" What . The power to create anything ?" Hal asked.

" No.....the power to Fly. Jesus..that was cool. Your really lucky to be able to do that . " Steve laughed.


" Well , I do know that maybe In a few years after you turn 21 a spot maybe open. You have my address. You ever want to be an adult and do this....look me up In Coast City ok. " Hal said as the 2 hugged.

" Bet on It. Take care , Hal. " Steve said as he watched Green Lantern change and start off Into the air.

" You too. " Hal said as he was gone. Steve watched his energy trial dissapear slowly and he shook his head and walked downstairs.


Epilogue 2#


" So what did ya do with .. "It " Steve ?" Arnie asked as the 2 studied In his room.

" Its put away. They let me keep It since It doesn't have a charge anymore. Sad to see It all end though. The flying was the best part . " Steve laughed.

" Yeah , you ever fly to Japan or England ?' Arnie asked.

" I only had It 2 to 3 months. Plus I spent more time on an alien planet than anything . " Steve said as he stood.

" You wanna go grab some pizza at , Mr. N's ? " Arnie asked.

" Yep. Lets go. " Steve said as the 2 walked out. Inside the dark closet set the Green Lantern ring. It sit alone In the dark. Then as both boys were gone....It flickered awhile and came back all lit up.
