A friend of mine is thinking of road trippin' to Philly this summer. Any ideas on place to eat, sleep and entertain ourselves?

I assume she's been there but I havent. Help!

Go to a Phillies game.
You can go get a cheesesteak at Jim's on South Street.
You can go to the Philadelphia Zoo.
You can visit the Camden, NJ Aquarium, or any of the nearby theme parks: Six Flags Great Adventure or Dorney Park.
If you're into history there's a lot to see in Philly.
For sleep, any old hotel will do. Just not near the airport.
There might be some kind of exhibit or show in Penn's Landing while you're there.
Plenty of good restaurant and bars in the city as well.

They have a damnfine art museum. I hit it everytime I get in town. Which has been at least 5 years ago, now...

Screw Philly!

Go to Pittsburgh instead. Much more to do there and it's cheaper.

Otherwise, Philly is a great place to start from to get to New York.

Philadelphia is one of the countries most underrated cities.

There is SO much to do there. Go to Tony Lukes' for the cheesesteak on South Oregon.

Check out Elfreths Alley, do the 1776 tour in city center. Go up to New Hope for shopping or to Washingtons Crossing.

Philly is fun, the people are great and it's going to be home in a matter of a few months. (well ok, so home will actually be a New Jersey suburb of Philly by why quibble)

There's The Franklin Institute, if you're into science. And there's a lot of historical places to visit, especially The Liberty Bell.

Since you're talking summer, you could always take a trip to South Jersey and go to the beach, if you don't mind driving another hour or so. And yes, South Jersey beaches are clean. (I'm originally from there, right outside of Sea Isle City.) However, I'd say go to Wildwood if you want to hit the beach. You'll have to walk further to get to the water, but it's a FREE beach - other beaches (Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Cape May, Margate, etc.) will hit you with a beach tag fee. If you go during the middle of the week, you won't even have to deal with many traffic problems. Wildwood also has Morey's Pier and Mariner's Landing, if you want to hit a water park and amusement park.

Not to mention you can hit the Atlantic City Expressway and go to... well, Atlantic City. There's the casinos, not to mention Steel Pier if you like amusement rides. Not to mention the Boardwalk. Of course, many of the shore towns have some form of amusement rides. I also believe Atlantic City has free beaches, but they're not as well-tended as the surrounding ones.

If you're doing the art museum, and it's possible, go on a Sunday. It's "pay what you wish", or, for a cheapskate like me, free. Otherwise I think it's like 10 bucks.

I second the idea of a Phillies game. Tickets aren't that much money, and it's a good time.

Moriarti's... Chicken wings...

You can't leave Philly without trying them OR having a pizza from Top Tomato in Center City. ;) They're usually my favourite parts about my trips into the city o' brotherly love.

and, I, too, heartily reccommend going to the Zoo and showing your support for all things crocodilian by visiting with the Alligator's in the Reptile house and paying them the homage that they so richly deserve.

Eat Scrapple.

Go to the Mummer's Day Parade (New Year only).

Drink at the Khyber Pass (if it's still there).

If you've got $100 a person to drop, go to Morimoto and order the chef's menu. You'll be very, very glad you did. Astral Plane is cheaper, and also a great choice if you want a real (i.e. non-cheesesteak) dining experience.

As for cheesesteaks, you can get good ones just about anywhere. Some folks will tell you that Geno's and Pat's King of Steaks are the only places where you can get "real" cheesesteaks. These folks are rotten liars.

South Street is a good choice for both entertaiment and dining, especially since there's a comics shop there. The Franklin Institute is a lot of fun, and so is the Please Touch Museum if you have kids, or at least a childish nature.

You can go to the sports complex and have your picture taken with the statue of Rocky.

HEATHEN! Pat's King of Steaks is THE place to get a cheesesteak.

Good recommendations!

A few more I didn't see mentioned:

I really like the new Constitution Center in the historic section of Philadelpha. There's a multi-media presentation in a small arena-style theater that is very cool. Constitutional issues throughout the history of the U.S. are highlighted in exhibits. It's done very well, educational and entertaining for all-ages.

Reading Terminal Market is right next to the Convention Center, and it's a fun place too. It's a greta place for lunch as there's everythng form Amish pies to greek gyros to Chinese takeout. It's been awhile since I've ate there, but a sandwich deli place called Rockos had incedible chicken cutlet hoagies.

I also like to walk down the riverfront in Fairmont Park (behind the Art Museum). You can walk by "boathouse row" - the buildings that house all the local universities' crew teams. The waterworks is also behind the Art Museum, and it's pretty cool to see. It's a nice walk, and if it's a nice day, there will be tons of people out riding, walking, and jogging . . .

Fairmont Park also has a ton of colonial era mansions, that are very cool to see.
