Previews: May 2005 For July 2005
Marvel
(House of M side)
Marvel Visionaries: John Romita Sr. HC (pg.75) - This, I might actually look into as it seems to have a lot of interesting stuff in it! All those extras are be worth the price tag.
Combat Zone: True Tales of GI’s In Iraq TPB (pg.85) – I wonder if this was any good?
Fantastic Four: Unstable Molecules TPB (pg.93) – “Explicit Content”….What the??!?!!
(FF side)
House of M #3 (pg.3) – Much as I hate to admit it, I may have to look into this book.
Iron Man: House of M #1 (pg.5) – Did Pat Lee just bring Transformers to Marvel? Again?
Fantastic Four: House of M #1 (pg.6) – Ahhhh, the homage lives on.
Secrets of the House of M (pg.7) – Who the hell is Mike Raicht?
Uncanny X-Men #462 (pg.9) – Captain Britain is back!
Incredible Hulk #83 & #84 (pg.11) – Woo! That is one cool looking Tribal Hulk!
The Pulse: House of M Special Edition (pg.13) – Quicksilver, right? BTW, “Not final cover”, are you kidding me?!?! That looks fantastic as is, what more is going to be added?!?
Ultimate Fantastic Four #21 (pg.16) – Finally, a Greg Land cover that is cool!
Ultimate Spider-Man #79 & #80 (pg.18) – Ugghh, kid-Moon Knight. Bleah.
Ultimate Iron Man #3 (pg.20) – Kinda cool pic, but I don’t really understand. Kubert should know enough by now, but that cannon on the arm indicates there will be some sort of munition to be fired from it, right? Well, where is the feeding chamber going to be, and what about the ammo, b/c by the looks of it, it will be HUGE! [/end rant]
Amazing Spider-Man #522 (pg.21) – Horrible cover by Kaare.
Wolverine #30 (pg.26) – Great book.
Daredevil #75 (pg.27) – Is it just me, or did I already see this out in stores?
Black Panther #6 (pg.28) – He must be having a bad month, this is another bad one by Kaare.
Hercules #4 & #5 (pg.29) – Did this come out yet? I may check this out.
Daredevil Vs. Punisher #1, #2 and preview (pgs. 30-33) – I really respect Lapham and what he does, but I, for the life of me, cannot follow all of the physical action on this. I know, panels are not supposed to be second by second, but some of the action just doesn’t match up, IMO. I am very confused by what either he or the artist was trying to portray.
Marvel Knights 4 #20 (pg.34) – Carlos makes an AWESOME FF cover!!!!
Defenders #1 (pg.36) – Oh yes, this will be mine.
New Avengers #9 (pg.39) – I hate you Sentry/Cosmic Fabio, with the heat of 1billion burning suns.
Giant-Sized Spider-Woman #1 (pg.40) – Cool, old stuff on SW. Will look into.
Marvel Team-Up #10 (pg.44) – Interesting, maybe I’ll get it.
Runaways #6 (pg.45) – Beautiful cover by Chen, awesome book too.
FF (pg.48-49) – Cool! Classic FF mini-poster!
Amazing Fantasy #10 (pg.51) – Well, that’s some interesting art.
Iron Man #4 (pg.55) – Love Adi’s conception of IM, but don’t know how this book is yet.
New Warriors #2 / New Thunderbolts #10 (pg.56) – Again, great art, but know nothing about the books themselves.
Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #5 / Fantastic Four #2 (pg.57) – Patrick! And Carlo, I wonder if your pencils are as good as your covers.
Weapon X: Days of Future Now #1 (pg.63) – I just still don’t understand how people don’t get the fact that his ‘claws’ are not big, round meat skewers, but very sharp blades, finely tuned and shaped. Tho, I guess that point can be argued.
Exiles #66 & #67 (pg.67) – Appealing as the art is to me, when I read the books, I just don’t get as excited as when I see things like this cover.
p.s. – same goes for Mark Brooks’ books.
New X-Men: Hellions #3 / X-Men: The End – Heroes and Martyrs #5 (pg.68) – Well, this is where Clayton has been, loved his image stuff and respect the writers a lot. And I hadn’t known Sean Chen was on the other book. I have to check these two out.
Punisher #23 (pg.69) – Just got the last one, I’ll probably get this too.
Powers #13 (pg.70) – Oeming’s art is fun, but I don’t think I could take another Bendis tale right now.
Marvel Select: Thanos Action Figure (pg.71) – THAT is Cool!! If I were into such things, I’d get one in a second!
------------------------------------
FCBD
(pg.15) Top Shelf Productions
Owly Splashin Around FCBD Edition – I wonder if this is any good?
Dark Horse
Serenity #1 (pg.22) – I love Laura Martin’s work.
Conan #18 (pg.25) – Cool, Severin and Timm.
Michael Chabon Presents The Amazing Adventures of the
Escapist #7 (pg.26) – Umm, did anyone ever tell him that this title is WAAAAAYY too long!??!?? Anyways, Love the Bolland cover, he’s awesome!
The Incredibles TPB (pg.29) – Never checked out the comics, haven’t seen the movie yet. I wonder if these books were any good.

The Goon #13 (pg.36) – Never disappoints.
Hellboy: The Island #2 (pg.37) – Woooo!! (and yet, sad)
Vampire Hunter D Volume 2 (pg.43) – I wonder if these books live up to the wonderfully strange anime.
Gacha (pg.50) – The Pooh are too cute and the Incredibles look really good!
Matrix (pg.52) – Those are some really great looking statues!
DC
All Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder #1 (pg.62) – As cool as this looks and sounds, someone REALLY has to rethink the title on it and make it more simplified.
(pg. 66-67) Amanda Connor rocks! And is one of the few artists who regularly actually puts any sort of emotion into females’ faces. That said, what the hell is Catwoman screaming about?!?
Year One: Batman/Ra’s Al Ghul #2 (pg/69) – Oh, that’s where Paul’s been! And, btw, I still hate Ra’s name, reminds me of the convo we had recently on the Comm where we were talking about the name of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. The name is just so damn, annoying.
(pg.72-73) – Talk about ‘lifting’ images from other artists!! Have any of these artists even seen what they are doing!!?!??!? Superman, okay, Action = Adventures, WW, in the same pose as Supes…..WTF is going on here!?!!? And they’re all near each other! Was this intentional?
Action Comics #829 (pg.72) – btw, this will be mine.
Aquaman #32 (pg.77) – This book has me hooked, no pun intended. I love the new direction, characterizations and the art has really grown on me.

Hawkman #42 (pg.81) – They killed Hawkman!?
JLA Classified #10 (pg.82) – I’ve no interest in the team, but, Butch is doing this! Cool.
JSA Classified #1 (pg.84) – Cool! Amanda and Jimmy are on the art team!!
The OMAC Project #4 (pg.86) – May wait for the trade.
(pg.87)
The Rann/Thanagar War #3 – Looks good.
Plastic Man #17 – Thought they cancelled this? Covers are always funny, but I cannot take a whole book of it.
Space Ghost TP – Mini was so good, wonder if there are extras on this?
(pg.89) Seven Soldiers books – I guess if they decide to collect these, I’ll get em, but right now, too many books, spaced all over the place.
(pg.90)
Teen Titans #26 – Tony and Marlo doing the art!??!?!! Wow.
Villains United #3 – Looking good! Can’t wait for the debut.
(pg.94)
Justice League, Teen Titans, TT TP – The art on all these looks great, but they are designed for kids.
Albion #2 (pg.101) – Well, I guess you have to start your kid off somewhere. O wonder how much involvement Alan has tho.
City of Tomorrow #4 (pg.102) – Has this come out yet? Any good?
(pg.103)
Desolation Jones #2 – Willams art may be the draw here.
The Intimates #9 – Wooo!
Silent Dragon #1 (pg.104) – A Yu book could be good.
100 Bullets #62 (pg.112) – I’m dropping this for the trades now.
The Dead Boy Detectives Digest (pg.113) – Awesome looking! Jill’s book looks like a keeper!
The Losers #26 (pg.117) – Don’t know about the book, but I have to say I LOVE Whatever covers Jock does, cause they are amazing on this title!
Otherworld #5 (pg/119) – This may be good.
(pg.120)
I wonder if I should start getting Y in trade form now.
(pg.123)
Cool maquette, cool plate.
(pg.128)
great Puffy maquette
(pg.130) “an elegant symbol of strength” ?? Funny, I was thinking, an elegant symbol of bondage.
Image
Body Bags: Father’s Day #1 (pg.137) – Well, cool it’s being brought out again, very uncool for the price and limited availability. Thank goodness I got this book when it first came out.
Bonerest #1 (pg.138) – Cool, I think Guiseppe’s art is really catching on. This preview was cool too.
(pg.140) “cover by Michale Avon Oeming” ?? he has an Italian equivalent? hehe.
Guncandy #1 (pg142) – Well, what’s not to like about the cover other than looking like a perv buying the book. Looks okay, but that cover is intimidating.
Hellshock (pg.144) – Cool, maybe I’ll get one of the collections, this book was really good.
The Amazing Joy Buzzards #5 (pg.149) – One of the most amazing books out there right now.
Bad Ideas (pg.150) – Maybe I’ll get this for the extras.
Mage, Vol. 2: The Hero Defined HC (pg.160) – Whoa! They finally did it.
Pigtale #4 (pg.161) – I’ve mixed feelings about this book.
The Walking Dead #22 (pg.167) – Wonderful book.
Abstract
Strangers In Paradise #75 (pg.206) – Nice, really getting into this book.
Bumperboy Loses His Marbles GN (pg.212) – hehe. Looks like a great little story.
ATI
Seal Team Seven (pg.226) – Well, seems interesting, well produced, but I’d be afraid someone from the actual team would pay me a visit.
Alias
Well, it looks like Alias finally kicked things up a notch, bringing on a whole slew of comics for us to try. Hopefully, they are successful.
(pg.234-235)
Penny & Aggie #3 – Good, Giselle is back.
Opposite Forces Vol.2 #1 – Cool, I was only able to get one of these books before, and it’s mildly entertaining.
Imperial Dragons #1 – Looks okay.
Dreamland Chronicles #2 – Could be good, but overwhelmed by price and tech look.
Armorquest #1 – well, even since I guess the Tolkien movies, there is the idea of giant fighting eagles. Personally, I don’t think this idea meshes very well with dragons, and there is a mythological gigantic bird of flight that I’ve always had in mind, the Roc. (also an AD&D monster) Ah, what one could learn from reading old mythology.
Antarctic
Gold Digger #66 (pg.242) – Yes, Fred, calm down, and we can finally read the book.
A.P.C.
Dark Mists #3 (pg.246) – Is that a messed up scan?
Mr. T #3 – Still don’t get why this book came out.
Avatar

Devil’s Due Publishing
Shades of Blue Vol.2 (pg.282) – Why no more issues though? Maybe I’ll get this.
Homeland #2 (pg.283) – Ah, this is what all the fuss was about. I never read the books, maybe I’ll read these instead.
DMP
Robot Vol.1 (pg.285) – Yes, you may be called a perv for buying this, but the concept seems cool enough.
Drawn & Quarterly
Ed, The Happy Clown #2 (pg.287) – What is this book? And is it new, or why is it so late?
Fantagraphics
O/A Art & Beauty #1 (pg.290) – Well, it’s nice to see that Crumb used his wife for the pic.
The Pin-Up Art of Bill Wenzel (pg.292) – That’s ample? ;) Hell, by today’s standard, every 13 year old is that big already. Nevermind manga.
Girl Twirl Comics
Jane’s World #20 (pg.296) – Paige!
Hyperion Books
W.I.T.C.H. Volume 1GN (pg.300) – Did this ever come out in singles?
IDW
Little Book of Horror books (pg.303) – Well, for those clamoring about the lack of Wells’s name in the title, it’s mentioned here and apparently, that’s how they are working all of their books, so, I guess I have no problem with it, just as long as they do recognize where it all came from.
The Complete Wynonna Earp (pg.308) – The monthlies took getting used to, but this may be better in trade format.
Illusive Arts Entertainment
Dorothy #4 (pg.310) – Hmm…*speechless*
Kenzer & Company
Knights of the Dinner Table #105 (pg.311) – Good stuff.
Moonstone
Khan #1 (pg.312) – Half of me thinks, maybe this will be good. The other half says, maybe they should’ve written about the Star Trek Khan.
(pg.317)
Zoro #3 – See, Zoro on ice!
New England Comics
The Tick (pg.318) – Something tells me this will never be as good as the toon.
OniPress
Banana Sunday #1 (pg.320) – Awesome! Colleen in Oni! (of course, the perverse side of me says, hmm, I wonder what she’ll do with those bananas! ;) )
Poison Press
Calvacade of Boys Volume 2 TP (pg.323) – Once, I got this, thinking the art looked good, then, I was like, wait, wait one second! Good to see the diversity out there.
Sirius
Poison Elves Ventures #3 (pg.327) – What the?!? When did poison elves become a saturday morning cartoon? I know that’s not to happen, esp. with that guy on the cover, it’s just the art is not what I am used to seeing on the book.
Speakeasy
Chocolate Thunder TP (pg.333) – Chocolate Thunder!??!?? Ah, that’s where those Love brothers are!

The Art of Josh Howard – Gah! Nara, put your pants back on!
Magazines
Nude Magazine #7 (pg.384) – That looks like a cool mag.
Books
The Age of Conan Volume 3 (pg.389) – There’s another movie coming out soon!??!!
A Gentleman’s Game (pg.390) – Ah, so that’s why Q&C is so late, he’s doing books like these. Sounds good, but I’d really prefer a monthly comic.
Secrets To Drawing Heads (pg.391) – Secrets? Yes, it’s called, knowing how to draw anatomy.
Big Bento Box of Useless Japanese Inventions SC (pg.392) – Hahaha!! But I’m sure almost every culture is guilty in this way.
Emily’s Good Nightmares HC (pg.393) – Wait! There’s a book too! Are they only prose? What’s the connection to the new comic book!!???
International
How to Draw Manga (pg.402) – I am so SICK! Of these books, I mean, if you want to learn how to draw, that’s one thing, but they should call these books as they are, learn how to ogle and draw sexy, young females showing it like there’s no tomorrow!
Trading Cards
Still, I am shocked that football, wnba, and baseball cards still come out.
Toys & Models
Invader Zim: Mega Gir (pg.436) – Gir!!
Marvel Super Hero Showdown (pg.440) – Huh? Isn’t this just Hero-Clix revisited?
Princess Ai (pg.442) – Alright, alright! I want to have sex with her! What!? Is this what you want me to say?! Is this the message to the dolls?!? Yes, she is sexy, let me leer at her nearly nekkid form.
O/A Star Wars: Clone Wars Asajj Ventress Maquette (pg.472) – I don’t know why, but the maquette’s seem to be so much cooler than some of the casts and bust and stuff and at least most of them are of the full figure, not just a portion.
Collectibles
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory: Willy Wonka Head Knocker (pg.502) – AH!! If that’s the real thing, that’s just creepy!!!
Games
Usaopoly Assortment of Monopolized Games – (pg.517/518) – Someone’s taking drugs, too many drugs….

Yowzers! Do you get all of this stuff on a monthly basis? Where do you find the time to read all of these books. This list may be even longer than Tracie's!

Secrets of the House of M (pg.7) – Who the hell is Mike Raicht?
He was(is?) one of the editors covering the X-books. I can't keep track anymore on which editors are still editors and which are freelance writers now.
The Pulse: House of M Special Edition (pg.13) – Quicksilver, right? BTW, “Not final cover”, are you kidding me?!?! That looks fantastic as is, what more is going to be added?!?
I'm not sure if that's supposed to be Pietro or if that's Magneto. I believe what they mean by "not final cover" is that the special will actually be an actual newspaper insert so it probably won't so much be an actual cover as just the photo in the lead story of this actual copy of THE PULSE.
And since you "WooHoo'd" the HOME MOVIES SEASON 2 DVD's, I'll forgive you for dissing the Bendis books.

Some key books I'm interested in within the May/July Previews:
"Kinetic" TPB -- Part of the short-lived DC Focus line, this sort of intrigued me. Not enough to get me to buy the series, but now at $10 for the whole 8-issue series? Probably, yeah.
"Dead Boy Detectives" -- Yay! More Jill Thompson manga-ish "Sandman" fun!
"Y: The Last Man" Vol. 5 -- always down with the Y.
"Bumperboy Loses His Marbles" from AdHouse -- looks cute.
"Monkey in a Wagon Vs. Lemur on a Big Wheel" #1, from Alias -- OK, that's just flat-out freaky enough a title/concept to at least gain consideration. Um. Yes.
"Fat Boy and Harvey" #1, from Axiom -- by Howard Shum, the hipster behind the manic "Gun Fu", which gains this book consideration from me.
"Finder" Vol. 7, from Lightspeed Press -- *excellent*.
"Courtney Crumrin Tales" #1, from Oni -- nice. Though I still haven't read CC V3. Shame on me.
"Burying Sandwiches" from Robert Sato -- intriguing blurb, and Xeric mark of distinction, but I'll want to see if I can find a sample before ordering it.
"The King" GN, from Top Shelf -- I really liked Rich Koslowski's "Three Fingers", so I'll definitely think about this tale of an "enigmatic Elvis impersonator".
"Middleman" #1 from Viper -- looks like it might be a fun adventure book, with the title character secretly defending the Earth from "threats extra-, infra-, and juxta-terrestrial".
"Karma Incorporated" #1 from Viper -- could be kooky revenge fun.
I also noticed that it looks like my monthly floppy-book order will be taking a huge hit next month, with all these having their final issue in July: "Billy the Kid's Old-Timey Oddities", "Trigger", "Easy Way", "Smoke", the current "Queen and Country" mini (though there'll be more of that, no doubt), "Livewires", and "GLA". That's more than a third (up close to half) of my order.
Yowzers! Do you get all of this stuff on a monthly basis? Where do you find the time to read all of these books. This list may be even longer than Tracie's!
nope. just some stuff that stands out to me. i only get the comic books, some of it will not make the cut, mostly, but i am envious with enough side-dough to be able to get the other stuff. :)
He was(is?) one of the editors covering the X-books. I can't keep track anymore on which editors are still editors and which are freelance writers now.
oh, thanks tracie.
I'm not sure if that's supposed to be Pietro or if that's Magneto. I believe what they mean by "not final cover" is that the special will actually be an actual newspaper insert so it probably won't so much be an actual cover as just the photo in the lead story of this actual copy of THE PULSE.
aaannnddd...thank you again! :)
And since you "WooHoo'd" the HOME MOVIES SEASON 2 DVD's, I'll forgive you for dissing the Bendis books.
;P
woo-hoo!! i both offended and was forgiven by tracie in one thread! :D
