When a bookstore has folks in the store make recommendations about particular titles, does this incline you to purchase something you might have ignored already? Or, as one alternative, does this information do more to allow customers to measure the staff of the store (for instance, if all the recommendations seem like brain-dead intestinal debris, you can infer something about those who recommend such works) than choose something to buy?

Not really for me. When I see that display of books, I rarely ever see anything I would read. I like thrillers, mysteries, fantasy/scifi and it's a rare thing to see those types of books featured on the staff recommendation shelf.
