after re-reading x-23 #1 i am confused as to why sarah kinney was forced to be the surrogate mother to x-23. there isnt really an explanation that i could read into, and i was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this or perhaps an answer. thanx.

My impression was that they were isolated on this base, and this being years ago, there aren't that many women in science to begin with. So the only women in this top secret facility are Sarah and Martin's wife Rachel. The embryo of X-23 will only be viable for so many hours, so they have to implant it in someone fairly quickly. Preferably someone young and healthy. And Martin surely isn't going to approve of his young pretty wife doing that, nor would Xander since he's having an affair with her. But Sarah...

Now, I bet Xander could've found someone else, but he hated Sarah and wanted to stick it to her, because she dared to make Weapon X female. So he kind of made her do it if she wanted X-23 to be born.

Anyway, that was my thought when I read it.

My interpretation: she was being punished for doing something she wasn't supposed to, i.e. going ahead with the female clone. It didn't seem to be too much more than that...

It was actually both. The embryo had to be implanted quickly before it died and they forced Sarah to do it since she was the one who went against the rules and created it.

Well, she didn't really go against the rules, but the only way to actually make X-23 was to make her female. And this is not what Martin wanted, so he made Sarah hold it.

I was of the impression that Zander was feeling somewhat resentful towards Sarah, as she had effectively taken his place as head of the programme. Therefore he found this as a convenient way to pay her back. I really don't think Martin would have cared either way.

She did go against the rules. They told her not to do it, that they wanted a male so they should keep trying.

They told her not to do it, yes, but did they say "You can't do this, otherwise you're breaking some rule" or something similar?

Ok, then she disobeyed a direct order.
