OK --- IIRC, didn't the Dark Beast have the real Beast held captive at some point and he had taken his place in the mansion? How did that all turn out -- I quit reading right after that.

yes. Check out X-men Unlimited (v1) # 10. He locked Beast in some place and infiltrated the X-men posing as Beast to get some information on the Legacy Virus. Beast was rescued from his cell in X-Factor(v1) # 127, I think. :)

He did, from just after Age of Apocalpse to Onslaught Impact 1. X-Factor managed to find him in X-Factor #125 and free him in #126.

Sabertooth, Mystique and Forge end up freeing him, If I remember correctly Sabertooth was handy in freeing him as he could tell the differecne between Beast and Dark beast because of their scents.

Yep, one and the same.

To my knowledge, they only had that one encounter during Onslaught when X-Factor freed him. Since then the Dark Beast has remained in the background, popping up in random X-Factor, X-Men, X-Man sightings until now being one of the "main" cast in the new Excalibur series.

What does IIRC mean?

That story showed just how great Dark Beast really is. The meticulous tracking down of Hank's friends and killing them. The way he lured and captured him. Just a very smart story.
