I just got back (Sunday, April 17th) from the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention held in Dallas, TX (technically, it was held in Grapevine). It was a blast! Keynote speakers were Mayor Rudy Gulianni, Michael Weiss and Patti LaBelle (she is an OUTSTANDING speaker). I came away with an even greater sense of community between Phi Theta Kappans than when I attended the Con last year in Minneapolis, MN. Considering how huge PTK is, are any of my fellow CBR posters current or former PTK members? Just wondering.

For those who don't know what I am talking about, Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year college students.

Awe Grapevine! It's been a long time since I've been that that mega-mall with all the teenie boppers.

Huh. It's the only frat allowed at my school outside of a classical music frat. No frat houses or school endorsement, basically, as the founder was opposed to frats -- and football -- and alcohol -- leading to a ban on all three.

I know some members, none went that I knew of... Probably because tomorrow's the last day of class.

There is a "greek" Theatre group that a few people are members of but the last student to head it up made the entrance requirements secret. While the faculty are all members, only the few (hand-selected by a student who graduated last fall) students are members.

Can't remember the name but it's the college counterpart of the International Thespian Society. I was inducted into ITS as a lifetime member back in high school.

The members of my chapter had our piorities straight. While most of the students went to the site where JFK was shot, we went to the mall and Hooters (where we debated gender roles in society ... to keep it intellectual and stuff ... we even asked for input from two of the Hooters Girls in our discussion ... their views were "interesting" to say the least).

It's not a frat. A student must have a gpa of 3.5 to be invited and maitain a 3.0 after paying the one-time membership fee (it varies from chapter to chapter, Upsilon Sigma's is $70.00). Phi Theta Kappa members are eligiable for tons of transfer scholarships to universities. For instance, Mississippi University for Women offers full tuition for four semesters. Ole Miss and Mississippi State offer $700.00 a semester. Jackson State College offers full tuition AND books for PTK transfer students.

It pays to make A's.

I'm a poet and didn't know it!

Ah. Well, we call those honor societies "frats" at our school since it's the closest thing we have.

We have three or so honor societies (two that are departmental) with greek names and that's what passes for frats here. Never had a clue how they were run on other campuses.
