Conan #15
Ex Machina #20 - soon I switch to trade
JLA Classified #6 - as I see more and more DC books I am uninterested in (Thanks to Infinite Crisis) I am glad I have a few more issues of this gem.
Question #6 - a quality but unimpressive mini-series. Great art, ok story. I wish this had been better.
Daredevil Vol.11 - no idea what this is about. The only Bendis book I enjoy.
Walking Dead #18 - my FINAL issue of this book.*

Wait for the Trade
-----------------
Lucifer, Seven Soldiers: Klarion, Fantastic Four, Runaways, Young Avengers (and maybe others)

*Yes, I am simply switching to Trades.

Birds of Prey #81
Gail! Hated the ending to last issue, but in the way that I'm sure Gail wants us to hate it.
Ex Machina #10
Very much enjoying, but am going to switch to trade after this arc.
Omac Project #1
The downside to pre-ordering. It is by Rucka, so I'm slightly inclined to give this a chance, but my Countdown is still sitting on the floor unread. Hmmm...
Space Ghost #6
I've really enjoyed this mini! A small part of me now wishes I had even heard of Space Ghost before this series.
Trigger #5
Mix up in pre-ordering has caused me to fall behind.

Small God #8
Great series, but I want to switch to trade next arc (if possibe).

Amazing Spider-Man #519
I absolutely hate the changes coming, but so long as JMS is writing, I'm not leaving .
Cable/Deadpool #14
Still surprised by how much I like this series. Switch to trade?
Fantastic Four #525
Miss Waid & Ringo...

Wait for Trade
--------------
100 Bullets
I sooooo miss this book. The downside to waiting.
Batman: Jekyll & Hyde
Will definitely buy in trade. Jenkins & Lee!

Maybe. Need to read vol. 1 and decide.
Catwoman: When in Rome
Definite!
Lucifer
Consistently a fantastic read.
Seven Soldiers
Depending on how the trades are packaged.
Invincible
Got volume 4 yesterday which catches me up to where I stopped buying monthly!
Daredevil
Waiting for hardcover.

Major Decision
-------------
Superman #215
It's Gail!!! It's Byrne. But it's Gail!!! But it's Byrne. What to do?

Have to leave work. Will finish later.

Eric - for what its worth, OMAC was the only book to spin out of COUNTDOWN that I even considered. But I just don't think I can bear it.

Tracie - I knew I could count on you to let me know when Jenkin's final issue of Spectacular came out. I am definitely buying this. I wish he and Buck worked on more issues together. No offense to Ramos or Damion Scott, but Buckingham was the guy who really worked on this title (for me)

Bad sales have apparently chopped this down to 8 issues, but I'll see it out.

Yep - there's always a difference between business trips to Japan and visits to the in-laws. I arrive Wednesday night (Japan time), have meetings on Thursday & Friday and fly back on Saturday night (arriving Saturday morning West Coast time). Overall, trips like this aren't too bad because I'm on the go the whole time so I never really have the time for the jet lag to affect me.

This is going to sound really weird, but I don't even bother reading manga anymore. (I'm imagining a whole lot of booing and hissing coming from the Pipeline regulars as I type this). I've still got a whole bunch of books that I bought when I first went to Japan 10+ years ago. Read them all, but realized after a while that part of the joy of reading manga was lost on me when I'd have to stop every 10 seconds to look up a word/kanji that I didn't know. It was frustrating.

Augie De Blieck Jr.

I actually don't read much manga, either, come to think of it. I think I've reviewed every one I've read this year, just about. Not that much. But I do enjoy the ones that I read.

I've never been to Japan, so I can only imagine the sensory overload that must be like. I imagine your schedule keeps you locked up safely in offices without having to deal with most of that, either.

DARK HORSE COMICS
Milkman Murders TPB, $12.95

Read the first issue and liked it. Lost track of it after that. Can't recommend it one way or the other. The set up was good, but I remember some people complaining that it fell apart later on. We'll see.

DC COMICS
Ex Machina #10, $2.99
JLA Classified #6, $2.99
Omac Project #1 (Of 6), $2.50

I don't want to read OMAC. I need to read OMAC. I don't want to support DC in CRISIS mode. I do want to read Rucka's return to Sasha. UGH

At least JLA:C is coming out this week, too.

GEMSTONE PUBLISHING
Donald Duck And Friends #327, $2.95
Mickey Mouse And Friends #276, $2.95

I should drop these. I never read them. I need to make a decision on these soon. UGH

IDW PUBLISHING
Legend Of Grimjack Vol 2 TPB, $19.99

This is very good news. Am loving the current series, and can't wait to catch up on the back issue type stuff.

IMAGE COMICS
Four Letter Worlds GN, $12.95
Invincible #22, $2.95
Iron Ghost #1 (Of 6), $2.95
Savage Dragon #121, $2.95
Savage Dragon Vol 10 Endgame HC, $49.95
Walking Dead #18, $2.95

A new DRAGON HC? Whoo-hoo! Am most excited at this point for FOUR LETTER WORDS, though. I've read the rest of them already.

MARVEL COMICS
Amazing Spider-Man #519, $2.25
Marvel Previews May 2005 Extras, AR
Spectacular Spider-Man #27, $2.99
Ultimate Spider-Man #76, $2.25
Young Avengers #3, $2.99

Thanks for reminding me of Jenkins' last issue of SPECT SPIDEY, Tracie. I'll definitely stop by for that.

NBM
Boneyard Vol 4 TPB, $9.95
Ordinary Victories GN, $15.95

BONEYARD is for sure. I forget what ORDINARY VICTIMS is, however. That'll involve a flip test, but I someone doubt I'll be getting it.

Previews Vol XV #5, AR

I love and loathe this time of the month. Yay! It's a new PREVIEWS. Boo! I still haven't put together my order from last month's, and I'm just about completely out of time. Gulp.

Definitely waiting for the trade:
Uncanny X-Men #458, $2.25
Wolverine #27, $2.25
Livewires #3 (Of 6), $2.99
100 Bullets #60, $2.50

That's the X-MEN book with Alan Davis art, right?

Might pick up a trade eventually:
Spider-Man Breakout #1 (Of 5), $2.99
Runaways #3, $2.99
Hercules #1 (Of 5), $2.99
Small Gods #8, $2.95
Batman Jekyll And Hyde #1 (Of 6), $2.99
Birds Of Prey #81, $2.50

I like BRIDS OF PREY, but it's one of the books that got chopped due to time constraints. Can't read everything. JEKYLL AND HYDE interests me for the Jae Lee art, but I know that's only lasting the first couple of issues or so. Sounds like they got a great replacement for him, though. HERCULES and BREAKOUT will depend on other reviews. I don't know that I necessarily care at this point.

I would love to take a trip to Japan one day.
That would be a very cool summer vacation.... "daydreams"

Anyway, here's my gigantic list for this week:

Small Gods #8 - This is a very cool black and white noir book from Image.

Conan #15 - I'm pretty behind on this. I'm sure that Busiek and Nord are still doing a great job though, and I'm looking forward to catching up.

Aquaman #29

Ex Machina #10

Hawkman #39 - This has been suprisingly good. Palmiotti, Bennet and Gray are a nice team. I wonder if Bennet is going since he's the regular penciler on BOP now.

JLA #113 - I've been loving this. The Crime Syndicate rules!

Superman #215 - I'm relieved that this is finally done. What a huuge disappointment, that Jim Lee's stellar art was wasted on this story.

Cable/Deadpool #14 - This book is so much fun, Nicienza and Zircher are a awesome team.

Hercules #1 - I strongly dislike the creative team, but I'm a Herc fan since the 2 Layton miniseries from the 80's so I'll check this out.

Runaways #3 - This is the book that I'm most looking forward to this week. I didnt read Runaways at all until the relaunch, and now I'm really digging it. I guess that they do work.

Beta Ray Bill #4 - Buying this for Andrea Devito's gorgeous pencils.

Young Avengers #3 - This has been pretty good so far... I'm curious about this, not sure how much I like it yet though.

Wolverine #27

-Nick

PS - I also want that Grimjack Vol 2 TPb, but I'll probably wait on that.

Torippu: Have fun in Japan! I've always wanted to go. I even kinda started trying to learn Japanese with of the "Japanese by Manga" books. I slacked off around NCAA time, but I'm starting to get back into it!

Now, on to how I'm putting myself in the poor house...

· PREVIEWS VOL XV #5
· MARVEL PREVIEWS MAY 2005 EXTRAS

· CATWOMAN WHEN IN ROME #5 - HC's are cool, but so are these covers!
· SUPERMAN #215 - It's over? Really? THANK GOD!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #519 - JMS, making me happy issue after issue!
· ESSENTIAL HULK VOL 3 TP - I have some of these, but now I'll have 'em ALL!
FANTASTIC FOUR #525 - Now JMS on this book too? :D
· HERCULES #1 - I'm not a big Tieri fan, but the previews for this just looked too cool.
· MARVEL KNIGHTS 4 #17 - I know I keep saying this, but this book has really been good! I think this continues a Kang / Rama Tut story.
· NEW INVADERS #9 - I know this book is about to follow Rogue and Gambit, but I'm liking it.
· OFFICIAL HANDBOOK MARVEL UNIVERSE SPIDER-MAN 2005 - These things are so damn cool!
RUNAWAYS #3 - Everyone on this board should be taking blood oaths to buy this in one form or another!
SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #27 - :( Sniff... last issue, sniff...
· SPIDER-MAN BREAKOUT #1 - Another Spidey series?
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #76 - I want my HOBBY!
UNCANNY X-MEN #458 - Cool.
WOLVERINE #27 - This is a great arc! I'm lovin' this 12-issue story so much more than the MK Spidey one Millar did.
X-MEN #169 - Nice...
· YOUNG AVENGERS #3 - O HAPPY DAY! :D

Trade Material:

100 BULLETS #60 - Another one comes out soon...
BATMAN JEKYLL AND HYDE #1 - Maybe. We'll see...
EX MACHINA #10 - Tpb only please!
SEVEN SOLDIERS KLARION THE WITCH BOY #1 - same.
INVINCIBLE #22 - Just read vol. 4! Waid's intro was key, as was every panel of that tpb!
WALKING DEAD #18 - Gotta re-read old vol's to get ready for the new one!
LIVEWIRES #3 - they make a tpb, I'll get it... 1/2 off
STORMBREAKER SAGA OF BETA RAY BILL #4 - Horses from space throw hammers and rock planets? Neato!
X-23 #5 - Too curious not toget gollected.
ATOMIKA #2 - I'd give it a shot.

Everyone is welcome for the reminder!

I ended up not even noticing that FOUR LETTER WORLDS was finally on the release list this week! I'd been waiting SO long for that one! I'm VERY excited for it because the talent list just RAWKS!!! A lot of Oni and Image favorites all getting together to spin some tales of love, hate, fear and fate!

-Augie

My total reading list may not be very long, but when I was taking stock of what I wanted to keep or drop during The Purge, I noticed that nearly half of what I read is manga. Oddly enough, this is not intentional. It just so happens that when I flip tested books in the stores, and then decided to read the ones I like, those were the ones I liked. As for the issue of having to continually flip back to the glossary while reading manga, I've never been bothered by that. I'm accoustomed to routinely flipping to glossaries from my not-so-distant university days where I was reading alot of Shakespeare, Homer, etc as part of my degree studies. The only thing that has changed is that I am looking up Japanese terminology rather than Greek or Old English.

Oh and torippu, I know you are headed to Japan mainly for business, but if you have any touristy tips I'd appreciate hearing any you care to pass on. If all goes well, I'll be headed to Japan in 2007 for Worldcon and I should have at least a week or two to see the highlights of Japan before/during/after the con.

Augie - Sensory overload doesn't affect me as much as when I first lived here 10+ years ago. I've been back and forth so many times now that Japan doesn't even feel like a foreign country anymore to me. I need to travel to other parts of the world to get that rush from experiencing new & different cultures.

Oh and torippu, I know you are headed to Japan mainly for business, but if you have any touristy tips I'd appreciate hearing any you care to pass on. Where is Worldcon going to be held? I've got all sorts of places for you to visit. I lived near Osaka & Kyoto for 1 year as a student from 93~94 and 2 years as an English teacher in Hiroshima from 95~97. Never lived in Tokyo but spend most of my time here while on business so I could probably recommend some stuff.

I apologize for highjacking this thread. Enough Japan talk from me (although it's a big part of my life/personality so I could ramble on for hours on end if people would listen).

Trip, No need for an apology on my end. I studied Japanese in high school and college, but have never been to Japan, so I'm enjoying this.

Scott, please post after reading Jenny Finn Doom. I love Mignola, but the price tag scared me. A favorable review might help me to overcome that fear.

To continue where I left off:

Four Letter Worlds GN
Pre-ordered! I didn't recognize what this was until I saw other people's posts. D'oh!

Livewires #3
#2 was a tad more exposition-ey than Warren's usual stuff. Still enjoyed it though. Would wait for trade, but am not 100% confident that it'll be collected.
Spectacular Spider-Man #27
Shoot! I don't think I pre-ordered this one!
Spider-Man India TP
P really wanted this and it did catch my eye.
Ultimate Spider-Man #76
Wow. Harry's really Tyler Durden!
Uncanny X-Men #458
Like that Betsy's back, but the villains aren't impressing me.
X-Men #169
I think I pre-ordered this one, but I'm cutting bait on this one. This arc and upcoming solicits aren't winning me over. Pity.

Boneyard vol. 4 TP
Woot! But on a related note, I am very torn over the upcoming color volumes.

Beowulf #1
We may have pre-ordered. Gotta check.

Wait for Trade
----------------
New X-Men
P just read the first trade and really enjoyed it.
Runaways
Definite.
Spider-Man: Breakout
Mmmaybe. I do like Bedard, alot, but the premise doesn't call to me.
Little Star
Watson Oni Goodness!

Like VisionNick, I loved the Layton Hercules stories, but I still can't bring myself to buy this new one.

Scott, please post after reading Jenny Finn Doom. I love Mignola, but the price tag scared me. A favorable review might help me to overcome that fear.

I'll try to remember. It is a little pricey, but it's pretty good sized as well. $7 for almost 60 pages. I should clarify that it's not 100% all-natural Mignola; he co-writes with Troy Nixey, who also does the art. The look has sort of a swirling, somewhat-distorted feel which reminds me of Paul Pope more than anything else. (Nixey also did the creepy "Trout" for Oni.)

In other news, "Ex Machina" took a creepy turn in finishing off that storyline. I had seen the resolution guessed by someone online, but it worked out nicely. "Runaways" #3 was kind of marking time before getting to the big reveal, but was still quite entertaining on a line-by-line, scene-by-scene basis.

And the new hot book, in Hampton at least, seems to be OMAC. I went by my local store at 5PM Wednesday and they were already out. Their other branch as well. They were calling up other local stores and those were out as well. Yeesh, who woulda thunk it? It's friggin' *OMAC*. ;-)

Augie - Sensory overload doesn't affect me as much as when I first lived here 10+ years ago. I've been back and forth so many times now that Japan doesn't even feel like a foreign country anymore to me. I need to travel to other parts of the world to get that rush from experiencing new & different cultures.

Worldcon is going to be held in Yokohama, though depending on my finances and time I intend to see as much of Japan as I can while I am there, one way or another.

Oh, and to drag this thread back on topic: My comic shop received a new shipment of the first two issues of Shaolin Cowboy this week, which I flip-tested and then bought along with my Conan books this week mostly due to the positive reviews I've heard from people on this board.

Really odd, messed up comic, but in the best kind of way. So much for The Purge reducing the number of comics I am getting though. ;)

Sabrina: I've considered getting into the new Conan book. I got the $.25 ish and I'm getting the PCR mini (which is great so far). Remember, the tpb's are always an option! :)

Oh, and since Japan is a HOT topic, check this out:

Augie:

I know you're a Carl Barks fan, so I thought you'd get a kick out of seeing this: Carl Barks - "Flying Dutchman" Oil Painting Original Art (1972) (http://www.heritagecomics.com/common/auction/preview.php?SaleNo=816&LotIdNo=104001&type=temcomics042005b)

You too, huh? I think The Purge was secretly Augie's plan to get us to read more comics.

Yeah, me too. The difference now is the stuff I am reading is stuff I am reading because I truly enjoy it, not because I am reading it out of habit because "any day now its going to get good (again)."

That said, Most of what I didn't purge entirely, I've started reading in TPB only, which does cut back on the spending a bit in the long run. There's really only a few titles left that I am still buying in their monthly format and many of those are limited series that will be ending in the not-too-distant future.

pmpknface,

I really reccommend it. They are wonderful adventure stories, a refreshing change from superheroes and Jedi and samurai, etc. Conan is just a Barbarian and he goes around doing the Barbarian thing, and most of the issues, give or take a few arcs, are largely self-contained (well, not#15 really) so if you do get into the monthlies, chances are a good jumping on issue is coming very soon. Or just go with the trades, though be careful not to confuse the trades of the new DH stuff, to the reprints they are doing of the old Marvel stuff, which is also mostly good, though the stories are in a bit of a slump right now (TPB #6 and 7).

Thanks Sabrina! I saw the 1st DH collection on the shelf and I kinda regretted not pre-ordering it because it was so nice lookin'. And I have NO quams about Busiek. Nord's art has also never looked better. Miles ahead of his DD work. I bet I'll end up on the Conan bandwagon. ;)

Yeah, I know about the DH reprinting the Marvel stuff. I've heard the BWS stuff is the best, and his last ish was #23. I think it's #47 that has an AMAZING cver though...

have to say, WOW! What a great week for comics, and I have to say, one of the first things I thought of after reading them all was Tracie's comment about how, without fail, the week of Previews is gonna be a big one! For that little reminder, I appreciate her. ;)

ON TO THE BOOKS!!
SOmehow, I missed some, I think it was a nice day and I was busy with work, nevertheless, I was very satisfied with my picks and have to go to Midtown again to pick up what I forgot to get last week.

-------------------------------------
DC

Aquaman #29 $2.50 - awesome, I really love the art and depiction of all characters in this book. (appreciation to all the dc'ers in the forum and 13th)

Robin #137 $2.25 - again, appreciation to Tracie for the reminder on who the guest artists were. Love Intimates, and this book was good, but they really did a 'careful' job on this one, it looked like they really wanted to get a handle on how to do it, but may have been afraid to take over the book fully, in their style, as many of the pages are far away action shots, but they highlight what they do best, a lot of non-superhero art that is very good.

Space Ghost #6 $2.99 - awesome conclusion! tho i love this book and want it to go on, i think the book would've meant a lot more if it had ended with the explosion and his death, instead of the superhero ending. I thought it was all so touching a moment, but again, then there was the 'happy' ending.

--------------------
Image

Four Letter Worlds GN $12.95 - I CANNOT BELIEVE I MISSED THIS!!! AHHH!!!! (appreciation to this thread for reminding me)

Savage Dragon #121 $2.95 - I was so disappointed in the last book that I could not bring myself to get this one, then I read this thread and was reminded of the backup story that I loved so much. Dammit! another one missed! (thanks thread)

Spawn #145 $2.50 - I read that this is getting kinda good. May take a second look.

Walking Dead #18 $2.95 - Arrgghhh! *jealousy to ADB* Excellent book, but that ending! Where will they go now!?

----------------------------------------
Marvel

Runaways Vol 2 #3 $2.99 -AWesome book!

Stormbreaker Saga Of Beta Ray Bill #4 $2.99 - Another awesome cosmic adventure!

Wolverine #27 $2.25 - Like I said earlier, as long as the current team stays on this book, so will i!!! Awesome! I haven't been into an x-book in quite some time like this. And of all the overused characters....

--------------------------------
Dark Horse

Conan #15 $2.99 - Great book!!! With the regular artist seeming to fade a bit, b/c of workload, this new one picked up a tale and illustrated it perfectly! I love the art and story on this one.
---------------------

Antarctic Press
Gold Digger #63 $2.99 - Great Book! Nicely organized by Fred too! I was finally able to actually read and follow the story on this one as fred seems to have finally calmed down a bit to tell a story, not just jumble everything down into pages of mass chaos.
-------------------------

Fantagraphics
Hate Annual #5 $4.95 - Missed this, may give a look next time.
-------------------

Kenzer & Company
Knights Of The Dinner Table #102 $3.99 - great book, funny stories, the usual.
------------------------
Magazines
Previews Vol XV #5 $4.50 - I hvae no idea how i missed the fact that it was Peview week!!! (again, tracie foretold the future on this one for me)
-----------------

Be Beautiful
Selfish Love Book 1 GN $15.99 - yes, an adult book, but I wonder if it has more meaning than typical porn? I must see.
