A cross section of Pre Crisis DCU continuity

I have entire Crisis story. But it does not make sense. I do not know characters good.

I ask favor: list issues to help me understand characters who appear.

One issue is what I would like, two at most. Must be $15 or less to buy if I go look for it.

Then, what issues come after crisis to reintroduce people?

The original title for Crisis was History of the DC Universe: Crisis On Infinite Earths; however, Wolfman decided to shorten the title & make a summary to clear up then current DC continuity in History of the DC Universe after the maxi series ended. History of the DC Universe was originally released as 2 issue prestige format series, but it was collected in TPB with an Alex Ross cover in 2002. I believe it's still in print if you order the story at the bookstore. If not, you may find the original 1986 2 issue series and/or the TPB in a comic book specialty shop.
