I was reading Tony Bedard's forum today and by his own words he revealed what is going to be happining in the series after timebreakers as well as some details to the House of M tie in. He also hinted on the members that might still be around.
It might be helpful to consider that the "big event" packaging is something that's useful for selling the series to retailers and giving some focus to marketing efforts, but they don't necessarily rule what happens character-wise in the story. For example, we have some nice conflict now with the Sabretooth-Blink-Mimic triangle, and adding Holocaust to the mix present some neat conflicts, too.
The Timebreakers arc will fundamentally alter the status quo and motivations for the team. There will also be spotlight moments for Namora and Beak. The following 3-parter has big moments for Heather and for Mimic. The House of M story will be motivated by a desire to return Beak to his reality and his family, not by a desire to join in the company's Big Event. But the very nature of House of M will allow us to introduce a major new ongoing adversary for the team in their new era.
Anyhow, I get what you're saying about character-driven stories. I'll keep trying to strike a balance between interesting new situations and settings and moving the spotlight from one character to the next. But if it seems like the "events" are taking over, that's just the packaging to entice new readers.

Looks like Beak isn't going to bite the bullet in Timebreakers after all, what a relief and he may be staying a little longer how about that.
