Moderators basically do all the boring "regulate what threads go where" stuff and enforce the board rules. It's a volunteer thing when you're asked, which is if there's an opening and you've dsplayed the necessary helpfulness and concern in your usual posts. No fixed hours that I know, and it probably varies with the level of work which people provide with relevant posts.

Well, it depends which one. My life is rather dull. Tom and Brandon, on the other hand, are quite the jet-setters, often seen in the society pages. Buried lurks where you would least expect him. And Matt rules the entire southern hemisphere from his hidden lair underneath a dormant island volcano.

The UN? Screw that! I'm gonna act the way I act best: UNILATERALLY!
It'll never work. You'll never get pass my sharks ... they have lasers on their foreheads!
As for the original questions:
Moderators are volunteers and do not get paid.
Their role is to keep theboards running smoothly, which entails a few things.
People are asked to be moderators - anyone that asks to be one pretty much never will.
