View Full Version : Krypton, Mars, Daxam - any other potential sources of "Supermen" types?

Okay, Superman came from Krypton to Earth and ended up with Superman-level strength and other nifty powers.

J'onn J'onzz came from Mars to Earth and ended up with Superman-level strength and other nifty powers (although in his case I think he had most or all of them when he was just a bright young Martian living on his homeworld).

I've long since lost track of the current continuity of Mon-El/Valor/M'onel/Whatever, but I do recall that in the Invasion crossover event (back around 1989?) a bunch of guys came to Earth from Daxam and discovered it gave them Superman-level strength and other powers.

My question is: In the "modern era" DCU, are there any other planets that have fairly humanoid inhabitants whom we know would gain Superman-level strength and probably other powers if they travelled to Earth or an Earthlike planet? (Or, as in the case of the Martian Manhunter's nearly-extinct race, are there any people who ALL have such powers on their own worlds and would still have them on Earth as well?)

I don't believe that Lobo's Superman-level strength was unique among his race, so I would presume that all Czarnians would have super-strength. And I know they all had his regenerative powers.

Of course, Lobo killed all the Czarnians, so it's sort of a moot suggestion.

Maxima's homeworld of Almerac was a warrior planet. No one's quite up to her skill, but I figured they mostly share her powers.

But Almerac was destroyed by Imperiex, and I don't know how many of her people survived.

There's always Apokolips and New Genesis, too.

IIRC, there WAS a world, pre-Crisis, where humans gained super-powers. I think Lex Luthor was the hero of one such world.

Pre Crisis, ANYONE from a planet in a red sun system would have super-powers under a yellow star. I think someone at DC eventually woke up and said, "Oh, hey, there are billions of billions of red stars in the galaxy...guess that means Superman isn't all that unique anymore...maybe we better change that."
Nowadays, races that gain powers from yellow sunlight are supposed to be exceeding rare, but they do exist. There was a DC special some years ago, not sure if it was an Elseworlds or not, but it had Luthor as the emperor of the galaxy thousands of years in the future (he'd survived by transferring to one cloned body after another for centuries). His troops were systematically searching out and exterminating any species that had the potential to become superbeings.
Naturally, one guy survived the slaughter of his race, and once rescued by rebel forces and brought to a yellow sun system, he became the new Superman to battle the evil Empire.
It may have been an Elseworlds, but that future Superman did appear in regular continuity some years back. He travelled back to the present day and attempted to kill Luthor, only to be stopped (by Superman himself, ironically). Supes thought the guy had returned to his own time, but actually he was captured and imprisoned by Luthor (using synthetic kryptonite). I'm pretty sure he's been completely forgotten by the writers, so he's probably still stashed away in some hidden Luthorcorp laboratory.

Pre-Crisis, the planet Thoron was close enough to Krypton to produce super-humans. They were "sister" planets, Halk Kor came from there. he was the "try-out" or "test character" for Mon-El. Except Halk appeared with Superman, and Mon-El later was published with Superboy.

That story sounds pretty cool. Was that one of the Legends of a Dead Earth annuals?

...and what a fight THAT must've been!

How the HELL do you kill ONE Lobo, let alone... x-million?!

in a early silver age story. We poor mortals would have super powers under such condtions or that what the story said.

IIRC, they were pacifists. Lobo was the sole psycho in that planet. In one of his recounts of the story, he claimed to have poisoned quite a few czarnians.

In the late fifties, there was a story called, IIRC, "The World That Was Krypton's Twin".

Superman finds a planet that is remarkably similar to Krypton, called Xenon by its inhabitants. He meets a scientist who looks almost exactly like Jor-El, and who has a son, Kell Orr, who looks enough like Superman himself to be his twin.

Back in those days, which predated the yellow-sun explanation, Superman's powers were credited entirely to the massive gravity and "unique atmosphere" of his home planet. Xenon was similar to Krypton but smaller, so even though his powers were somewhat reduced there, he still retained them. And people from Xenon gained super-powers on Earth, but not as great as Superman's.

Kell Orr takes Supeman's place on Earth, both as Supes and as Clark Kent, while the real Superman remains behind to try to help Kell Orr's father (can't remember his name) stop the upcoming explosion of Xenon. Which is about to go the way of Krypton. We finally learn that Xenon was once a moon of Krypton, set free by the larger planet's destruction, and that is why it bears such a close resemblance the big sister planet. (No explanation is ever given as to why Kell Orr and his father look so much like Superman and Jor-El).

Really bad science, but a neat story nevertheless.

What a lame way for a Lobo-ian to go.

lobo killed them by creating a virus and only giving himself an immunity to it, some call this a feat of a genius, yet since then he hasnt displayed any real intelligence

also, this might apply pre crisis, but like someone said before the yellow sun theory when supes powers were explained by the gravity of krypton etc. i think it basically hinted any race on a planet with a lot more gravity than earth has(like krypton) could atleast attain super strength and invulnerability if visiting planets with much less gravity

That makes sense, honestly.

If you have a race capable of being active and building a society under higher gravity, they should have much greater strength.

Heck, if you repopulated all of us to Jupiter, only the strong would repopulate on a long enough timeline and you'd end up with supermen.

There's Almerac the homeworld of Ultraa and Maxima, I think everyone there is pretty powerful.

There's Kathoon home of Night Girl which is probably one of the Sentinel Worlds in the present day DCU, I think the people of Kathoon all had Daxamite level powers but only in sunless environments.

I'd add New Genesis and Apokalips but the fact that their true forms are actually 40 feet tall rules out everyone from those two worlds, Darkseid and Orion have never actually visited Earth in their true promethean forms and i'm assuming their power levels would go up proportionally.
