View Full Version : Doom 3 (Xbox): better than I'd thought

I heard a lot of grousing about the PC version of Doom 3 being all flash and no substance (then again, Doom was never exactly rocket science), but I have to go on record as saying that the Xbox version of Doom 3 is the scariest game I can recall playing. Id really did a good job with creating a smothering, claustrophobic ambience here, and the sound editing is nothing short of brilliant. The graphics seem as if they shouldn't belong on a console...I realize that corners were cut visually compared to the PC version, but still, this is far and beyond anything I've seen on the Xbox. Obviously the gameplay is oldschool run-and-gun (though running will often get you into more trouble than it gets you out of), but despite the bad things I'd heard about D3 on PC, I'm aghast and amazed at the console version and loving every minute of it.

Played it at work (I work in a video games store) and found it lacking when compared to the PC version. The controlls just don't feel "right". Everything looks kinda "squashed" up and claustrophobic (TV v monitor problem I guess). It's a problem I have with all console 1st person shooters really, I'm a bit of a PC snob.

I'll admit that they definately must have employed Jesus to port it over, because they must have worked miracles in order to get those graphics on the Xbox.

Huh?

I am thinking about purchasing this, perhaps I will give it a try. Are the controls similar to Halo?

Yes, in most ways. If you're familiar with Halo's controls than Doom 3 shouldn't pose any problems.

And there's a quicksave button :-)
On the PC I bound quicksave to the RMB

I agree that its a really really scary game in some points. I mean I know that there's going to be something jumping at me, and yet I still jump about two feet when it starts running at me.

I got the collector's edition and I'm quite enjoying having Doom and Doom 2 on ready access.

Hate to resurrect this thread, but I have a question: now that old XBox games are so cheap, I could get either from one of the Circuit City's in town. And by either I mean the regular (Collector's Edition) and Resurrection of Evil. What's the big difference between the two? Or do I have to get both (isn't Resurrection of Evil the expansion pack on the PC?) anyway? Thanks.

You don't need to get both. RoE is a port of the expansion pack so it'll be much shorter than the regular game. I think there are some new weapons and monsters in it though. Both also have Doom and Doom 2.

Doom 3 was a waste of time. I turned on God Mode just so I could beat it faster.

Oh look, another monster closet.

Clock Tower makes Doom3 look like a Bratz in Vegas game..and it was the biggest disappointment of 2005

Funny you should say that. Doom 3 was "supposelly" coming out for the 360. Instead they manage to bring it out in Xbox. I'll admit, I couldn't believe myself. I can only imagine "if" they ever make Doom 4, the graphics will be the same. They already gave Doom 3 it's peek in graphics.

lol That's like the main ingredient for the Doom series. I remember almost getting a heart attack. (No seriously) Typing this reminds me when I was playing FEAR. lol

Don't get me wrong when I say this, but I personally think it's one of the best games made. I understand what you're saying though. What do you espect? The Doom series weren't made for plots. The Doom series was really made for stress realeaf. lol (dammit I forgot how to spell)

I agree: you don't play Doom for the storyline. But the gameplay was numbingly dull and unimaginative. How many times must I lurk through eerie halls of gizmos and exposed piping in search of some dead guy's PDA?

And making monster cabinets and other triggers painfully obvious ruins any effort by the developers to scare or surprise the player.

Doom III is a satisfactory game whose failings wouldn't be so evident had it not been for the hype.

If you take the evil paths, I daresay both Suffering games are more terrifying. All the typical stuff you find in a horror game, along with nightmarish hallucinations that get so bad you sometimes can't tell what's really there and what isn't.

Serik answered pretty well
noone considers a Doom game for the plot or dialogues (which suck ass), not even the developers. It's all in the gameplay. I'm glad you like the game -no sarcasm- but, to me, the gameplay was boring, repetitive, dull, uninspired. Graphically spectacular, no doubts, but too much hype for too scarce excitement.
and Quake 4 was no different, maybe even worse
