Pre-Crisis Superman chained together several planets and towed them around and blew out a sun in order to keep his secret identity a secret (it also involved Batman).

Oi, I don't know how many times I've said that The Crisis didn't affect Seid', but feh.

Well, take PC Superman... Darkseid used to put people like Mon-El into comas with a single attack... Moved planets around with his mind, dominate mentally billions of Daxamites, defeat a really comprehensive Pre-Crisis JLA roster with a mere fraction of his power through a hologram...

Ohh superboy.. you are so dumb..
more like Killing billions..
the gravatational pull of the planets would desemate all life on those planets and lets not talk about draveling between starts would almost instantly freze the planets .. killing all life..

Yeah, but back then it was about the fun and not the science. Hence Superman/Superboy moved planets a lot.

PC Darkseid is basically known for the Legion of Superheroes "Great Darkness Saga" showing, where he enslaved 3 Billion Daxamites with casual ease, ran roughshod over the entire Legion of Superheroes, including PC Superboy, Supergirl, and Mon El (Superboy's physical superior), destroyed Mordru with a wave of his hand, absorbed the power of a controller masquerading as the Time Trapper after destroying an Inerton/Photon shield that was supposed to be impenetrable, etc.

His other showings were less definable.

Anyway, all that stuff has always been in continuity for Darkseid - he and all the New Gods were unaffected by the Crisis - and Morrison just revealed yet ANOTHER retcon that makes it clear that he is in fact more powerful than that, that his real presence in the DCU would cause the successive collapse of all 52 universes.

Superman?

Highly variable. "Pre-Crisis" covers darn near 50 years. In his original appearances, Superman was hangin' at slightly-above-Spider-man level. By the '60s he could, essentially, do whatever the plot required.

(This was less of a storytelling handicap than you might think, as many of the Superman stories of the time were tongue in cheeky, slightly campy soap-opera stories, WAY different than the "We must take the idea of dudes flying around in their da-glo undies fighting evil ABSOLUTELY SERIOUSLY" type stories of today.)

And after that, it went up-and-down. There was a major power roll-back in the early '70s which some creators paid attention to and some creators didn't.

Basically, the pattern is this: Superman started fairly weak and became progressively more powerful. Occasionally, creators deem that Superman is too powerful, and de-power him. At which point he immediately starts to become progressively more powerful, until someone decides to de-power him again.

If you're curious about the Earth-2 Superman's power level I can explain that, too. But I need graphs, sock puppets, and a couple hours of your time.
