*sigh* Another childhood icon of mine fades into mediocrity and "goodness".

Now, I'm all for promoting a healthy lifestyle at a young age, but I'm feelin' for my favorite Sesame Street character right now.
Hey kids, broccoli and cauliflower are good for you, and they make you fart! Isn't that great?

It's from today's CNN website. I got a bad connection too. Let me try it again

His name is Cookie Monster for gods sake. His whole mission in life is to eat cookies. A litle bit more of my childhood dies every year. :(

Geez... ...Worst part is, they already had Cookie Monster do a "Eat more then just cookies" bit back in the eighties, with a rap song about eating fruits and vegetables. It was instructive, and damn I loved seeing Cookie Monster dressed up like a Run DMC style rapper.
You wanna promote good nutrition? Show that clip a few more times...
I swear to God, the next generation of kids are going to be such wusses it's not even funny.
My dad brought me up on John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson. Sesame Street was my show when I was 6 and now?
Eastwood makes love stories, Bronson and Wayne are dead and Cookie Monster eats vegetables....what's next?

WAAAAANT COOOOOOOOKIE!!!
Sigh...there's nothing wrong with sugar! Cripes, limit the amount your kids get and it's fine. Eating healthy is about a wide variety of things, not about "let's totally eliminate any reference to anything that, if overdone, can have detrimental effects!". Food nazis! Learn some control and moderation and these things aren't a problem.
And isn't Cookie's over the top obsession supposed to be a lesson tool in moderation itself?

It looks like I'm in the minority here but I say kudos to Cookie Monster and his healthy conscious ways. We could be a little more supportive of him and making this positive change in his life. But you guys are all selfish and think about how this effects you. THink about Cookie Monster. He probably has muppet diabetes. What happens if he doesn't stop? He'd be shooting up insulin and missing an arm by now. Who wants that?

I'm a HUGE Cookie Monster freak, but even I think this is no biggie. The article was kind of tongue in cheek, to me.

Sounds like to me they're trying to phase him out (must have been some bad contract negotiations) a la Suzanne Somers. He'll go from a featured player to background character to guest star that occasionally calls in from Fraggle Rock.

I can see him hosting a kids' variety show on the Food Network. :D

Who's to say that eating vegetables and what not is even healthy for the Cookie Monster. It was my understanding that for his specific monster physiology cookies were an essential component of his diet.

So, in other words, he'll end up like Grover, Bert and Ernie and the Two-Headed Monster..
Oh well, could be worst.. Guy Smiley had to retire after Jim Henson died..

Nah, Cookie Monster can (and often does) eat anything and everything. I recall that in one episode, he actually ate a phone.
He just really, really likes cookies.

I don't understand what the big problem is myself. He still loves cookies, but why not teach him to eat other foods as well? After all, the parents of the kids who watch the show have to show there kids proper eating habits as well, and it would be easier with a role model like Cookie Monster. I mean, if Cookie Monster can show restraint, can't you?

Yeah, I'm with Morts, Grant, and Spike here. This doesn't seem like a bad idea to me. Hell, just look at the last line of the "Sometimes Food" song. "Is sometimes now?" What's wrong with that? .... I wish I had cookies now.

And I really like Kitson's new design for Salad Lad...

C is for carrot... dat's good enough for me!
C is for cabbage.... dat's good and so tasty!
Could be worse, he could have been sponsored by Atkins, then he'd sing, "C is for carbs, which are always bad for me." Then he'd never eat cookies again.

People are forgetting this is an educational show. Cookie Monster is just trying to make nutrition more appealing for kids. It's hard enough for parents on their own to get their kids to eat healthy when kids are bombarded with snack and sugary cereals commercials. Think it's an unfair assumption that lack of parenting is the issue here.
It cracks me up that it's mostly single guys in their twenties and thirties complaining about this. It's not you're watching the show. At least I hope not.

They're just reacting to an icon of their childhood being changed to help promote healthy lifestyles.

Personally, nope. I've got no big problem with Cookie Monster eating a good diet, so long as he can still sing the "C is for Cookie" song.

It's not really about promoting a healthy lifestyle; it is taking a character whose very name defines his existance and turning him into something else, while still retaining the original name. How can he be "Cookie Monster" if he is eating a well-balanced diet? He is the afore-mentioned Salad Lad or something at that point.
I don't think this is an earth-shattering event or anything. CM is a source of entertainment; nothing more. Even kids recognize he is over the top with his ways. I don't see 5 year olds waiting for a front end loader to dump cookies on them like the video segment from waaay back showed.

For the last time people... he's still going to be eating Cookies. He'll still be Cookie Monster. They're doing ONE DAMN SKETCH about him eating other foods.
It's no different from the "Healthy Food" rap from the late 80's.
Healthy Food
Well, me known for eating cookie,
When me don't, they shout,
"Look, he trying to throw loyal fans a curve!
What he doing eating fish,
Or vegetable dish?
Man, he sure got a lot of nerve!"
Well, me answer you straight,
When me filling up plate,
Taking only cookies is all wrong!
'Cause you also got to eat
Fruit or veggies and meat
If you want to be healthy and strong!
Word up! ( not in this translation, but CM does say this on the video )
(Chorus)
Healthy food!
Boy, it taste so good.
Me one healthy dude
'Cause me eat healthy food.
Me love it boiled or stewed,
Me love it whole or chewed.
You'd feel just great if you'd
Eat some healthy food!
Me promise that when you eat varied menu,
You get more out of every meal.
You need balanced diet,
Come on and try it!
Not believe how great you'll feel!
Munch some carrots or beans
Or poultry or greens,
Along with your chocolate chip.
And banana or plum
Will make you go, "Yum!"
Nutrition--- it really hip!
( repeat chorus )
There broiled spring chicken,
Grapes ripe for picking,
And swordfish, tuna and trout.
And apple and cherry,
And all kinds of berry,
And broccoli and Brussel sprout!
There lettuce, tomato,
Boiled new potato,
There spinach and celery and beet.
Milk and honey and cheese,
Peanuts, peppers, and peas,
Pears and peaches and cream of wheat!
( repeat chorus twice )
