My cat stepped on the phone tonight while I was talking to some friends in Seattle, and cut off my connection.

I'm sure it was pre-meditated.

And, oh yeah, then he went and killed some nuns.

If your out of things you could swing by your pulitzer thread and try defend your pretty poor claims that the pics were anti-american propoganda.

(which you've probably just done so I'll look like a wally for posting this).

Meh. I was just trying to find a catchy title for the thread. I do feel the pictures are slanted to show only what the reporters wanted to show... wounded Americans, Iraqis dancing on burning Humvees, the 4 dead Americans whose burned bodies were hung from a bridge in Fallujah, etc. No pics of soldiers handing food, medicine, schoolbooks, etc. So, the article is accurate, IMO, even if "Anti-American" is stretching things a bit.

But while I see everyone liked my (mandatory) comments on this thread, not one person seems to have anything to say about the article...?

Neither did you.

I knew what the website would be about before I even clicked on it. You, on the other hand, seemed to treat it as a joke.

Samurai, I hope somebody bulldozes your home some day for belittling this. Nothing better to do? Hey, I've got an idea -- why not go back to your thread on the pulitzer photos and defend some of your claims?

Samurai, the lefties are on your tits about this, and I can't say that I blame them.

It's non-minimal to be making light of the horrific way that Sharon's government has bulldozed civilian housing, and indeed, civilians.

I take your point that it's worthless to try to hold CAT responsible -- they build bulldozers; it's not their fault if people kill people with their bulldozers -- but still, it's insensitive to regard this as just a joke, when the situation is one of people being insensed by a manifest injustice, and (over)reaching for a way to make SOMEBODY for God's sake take the rap for it.

Because by God, our government doesn't seem in the least interested in it.

Hey, c'mon. That's exactly not what I'm doing. Samurai's thread was in lousy taste, and people made fun of it.

Some people responded by taking the piss. Which is the high road.

Some people responded in far worse taste by having a go at Samurai. And that's a sight more crap in my book.

But it was still in lousy taste, even then.

How was it in lousy taste? He wasn't making light of people who's homes get destroyed. He was making light of people suing CAT because of it. It is no different than people wanting to sue Glock or Smith & Wesson because someone they know was shot and killed. "Hey! Let's hold the gun manufacturer responsible instead of the person actually committing the crime!" It is a stupid, reactionary idea.

Edit: I've seen far...far worse on these boards, such as damning parents who want to help their child stay alive. This has more to do with the poster than the content of his post.

Obviously the suit is stupid. Hence the "duh" response of stupid jokes.

However, not the point.

Taking the piss out of people who -- ineptly, impotently and irrelevantly -- want to hold SOMEBODY accountable for our country's involvement in the murder of Palestinian civilians, and to just come straight out of the barrel with it, that's not on.

Holding a bake sale to send someone over to kick Sharon's ass, that's acceptable. Making fun like this -- oh, ha ha, cats! -- when people are getting killed under the tracks of said bulldozers -- well, that just isn't very funny, is it.

But that isn't what he's doing, paul. He isn't making fun of the situation of people getting killed. He's making fun of people suing CAT. Just like I make fun of people suing S&W. It isn't that I don't care about people getting shot and killed. It isn't that I don't want to see the situation remedied, but holding the wrong people accountable is laughable and counter-productive. It also doesn't make it seem as if you really care so much as it makes you look like you are just out for a buck or a "cause."

As you said, they want to hold SOMEONE accountable. Problem is they aren't really interested in holding the right people accountable.

Does the Israeli government by their Caterpillar's directly from the company? You could have a case for suing them then, since it should be obvious to CAT what the 'dozers are going to be used for.

Unless you're talking about the case of Rachel Corrie, the website isn't advocating simply suing Caterpillar. It just wants Caterpillar to stop selling bulldozers to Israel as long as they are being used to demolish Palestinian homes as it sees it as a violation of basic human rights.

This (http://ipsnews.org/interna.asp?idnews=23274) sheds a little more light on the case. Caterpillar sells its equipment to the Israeli government as military equipment, meaning that it is fully aware of what it is being used for.

And while I'm sorry if I myself came across as attacking Samurai, but I think it's fair to say that he posted this as though it were a joke thread, and everybody responded accordingly.

M'kay. I finally got around to sitting down and looking over the site (as well as the helpful link Zhaki provided). I checked the website over myself and couldn't find anything on Stop Caterpillar suing the company...or Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch doing the same.

According to the site's fact sheet (http://www.catdestroyshomes.org/article.php?id=101) on the dozers they are sold to Israel through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales Program. (http://www.dsca.osd.mil/home/foreign_military_sales.htm) So while the Israeli military doesn't buy these things directly from Caterpillar they are sold as military equipment, and according to the fact sheet these things are purchased from the company by the U.S. Department of Defence.

Most significantly "Stop Caterpillar's" Declaration (http://www.catdestroyshomes.org/article.php?id=242) calls on the company to stop selling bulldozers to Israel, which is silly because they aren't selling them to Israel, they are selling them to the U.S. Defence Department who then sells them to Israel. On the other hand given the documentation about the use of Caterpillar bulldozers in Israel it's unlikely that the company doesn't know what they are being used for and yet it likes to present itself as socially responsible. (http://www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=38044&x=7)

Moreover, the site states: "We call on Caterpillar to establish transparent and credible mechanisms for independent monitoring and verification, with the assistance of human rights ngos, to establish when these conditions are met." So they are merely holding Caterpillar to it's own standards. This certainly isn't as silly as people on this thread have made it out to be and I have to wonder how many people besides Zhaki actually read the site before commenting on it.

Wesley, I highly doubt my home will be bulldozed because I'm not a terrorist, and I'm not aiding terrorists by building smuggling tunnels under my home. When Israel finds such tunnels under a home, knowing they've been used to smuggle terrorists, bombs, and weapons into Israel in order to murder Israeli men, women, and children, what should they do? Unless there happens to be an actual shipment in the tunnel or house, what can they charge the homeowners with? Just what is the penalty for tunneling into another country/across a border? I think it makes sense to create a policy of "use your house to aid terrorists, lose your house." And contrary to popular belief, they get everyone out of the house before they knock it down... they don't destroy it with the family inside.

As for Rachel Corrie, she should have known better than to stand in front of a bulldozer with an armored cockpit that makes for poor visibility. Suing Caterpiller for her death is crazy... it'd be the same as someone who is opposed to big gas-guzzling SUVs standing in the middle of a freeway, blocking all such vehicles from passing, who one day gets hit by an SUV who can't stop in time, and then their family sues the maker of the SUV!

Update: Caterpiller shareholders overwhelmingly (97% to 3%) turn down the calls to investigate sales to Israel:
