I just wanted to take a moment to salute one of the industry's greats, Dale Messick, who passed away today.

Messick created Brenda Starr, fictional newsreporter from the comic dailies and still published in many American newspapers today.

I enjoyed reading Brenda Starr, and appreciated Messick's important contribution to the comic's industry.

I hope Ms. Messick rests in peace.

Sad news, Brenda Starr's creator passed away at 98. There's an obituary at

It's too bad about this.

The sad thing is that I haven't read Brenda Starr in years.

Lea Hernandez wrote a nice tribute to Messick (http://www.thegreatcurve.net/2005/04/divalea-dale-messick-rip.html). She concludes by saying:

I'm going to take the day to remember that discovering Messick set me on a path I didn't even know was mine to walk: of being a girl adventurer in cartoons.

Brenda Starr is one of those strips that never ran in any local papers and that I've never really seen collected. I'm not well acquainted with Ms. Messick's work. RIP

With all the time I've spent tracking strip reprint collections, I can count the number of Brenda Starr reprints on one hand. Dragon Lady did one. Malibu did one. Blackthorne and ACG both did a couple issues, but nothing extensive.

I wish there was a market for some of this stuff. I'd like to see strips like Brenda Starr, Mary Perkins On Stage, The Heart Of Juliet Jones, etc. have some shot at significant reprinting. It's not going to happen though.
