Anyone have any recommendations of places I should check out around or near Manhattan? Thanks ahead of time!

Midtown Comics has two, one on 40th St. & 7th Avenue, the other in the vicinity of Grand Central Station.
Jim Hanley's Universe is at 33rd and 5th, right across from that big building from the monkey movie.
Forbidden Planet has a shop at Union Square (14th St. & Broadway).
I just had recommended to me Cosmic Comics at 23rd and Broadway, but haven't been yet. But they exist.
St. Mark's has a branch somewhere in the Village, if I'm not mistaken.
Moving here, or taking a vacation?

Found a last minute deal on a plane ticket so stopping by for a weekend. Funny thing is I try to go to NYC at least once a year (haven't been good lately) to see family but I always forget to check out the comic shops. My uncle has a business in Flushing and there was a cool store there that sold sports cards/comics/figures/anime but I have never ventured to another one other than that. Which location do you think offers the best variety because I don't think I'll have time to visit more than one. Indy24LA, I'll bring you back some dust from the Avenger's Mansion.

OK, you're coming to NYC, and you weren't going to say anything? Until now?
BOOO!
Cosmic Comics is really cool. The old guy who runs it is a crank, but he's one of those awesome cranks.
There's a store in the East Village called Jigsaw that sells only reeeeeally alternative comics, minicomics and zines. It's on 11th Street, between Avenues A & B. It's only open from 3-9, from Wednesday through Saturday. It doubles as a tiny little art gallery as well. People tell me there's events almost every Saturday this month, so that's awesome.
For regular comics, I'd say your best bets are Midtown for mainstream stuff, Jim Hanley's for the largest overall selection of all genres, types and nationalities of comics and Forbidden Planet if you're downtown and don't feel like going all the way to 33rd.

Yeah, if you're after variety, you want Hanley's. I use Midtown because their West Side store is right on the 1/9 line, and because they pretty much always have what I'm looking for from week to week, but if I just want to look at a gazillion comics of all shapes and sizes, I hit Hanley's.

I recommend both. I haunt the East side one (which is 45th & Lex, entrance on 45th). Of course it's better when you're a long term resident, as they give you a $20 rebate when you hit $100 bucks worth of purchases......
But, the selection of graphic novels will make you well up in tears!

On the plus side if you're a Jew, Muslim or just plain not Christian the store is apparetnly open on Christmas.

cosmic comics is great. It was my first ever comic book store. Midtown comics on 40th street is also great. There is also a nice little comic shop called time machine on 14th and 8th avenue. It doesn't have the widest selection but the guys there are really nice and cool (they always give me a discount). They also have some really nice golden age stuff.

Its called Its "A" nother Hit. 131 W. 33rd St. I visited them on my trip to NY last year. Midtown was nice and big. Cosmic Comics had the best SA selection.

WOW, I really appreciate all the info, will try to work some of the places in between trips to Papaya King ;) I'd like to meet up with some of you folks there next time but this was literally a last minute thing. I'll probably go to shops and be depressed when I come back home to the puny locations we have here. Thanks again!
