Been away from comics for about 15 years and just started reading DC pretty heavily again. I love what is going on right now with the DCU but I am curious about how this buildup compares to past events that "change the DCU forever." I mean, were people this excited about Zero Hour (which I have not read but understand is not very good)?

From what I remember, people were excited about Zero Hour...At least until it appeared, but it was a big shock in some areas, especially if you were a Legion, Hawkman or JSA fan.
I think, like most other "event" comics...Its not until the dust has settled and people look back after some time has passed, that you see that there was nothing really to get excited about. Though this might have changed in recent years seeing as readers reactions appear to be more cynical, eg. the reaction to Identity Crisis and Avengers Disassembled before they were released. Probably due to how they feel about previous event driven stories. Nowadays the hype appears to do nothing more than instil scepticism. :)

Countdown was a far better preview of whats to come than that pointless Zero Hour preview comic. That was so cheesy and dumb.
