mr. majestic has been one of my favourite characters since his first appearance and am liking the current regular series. my question is, how long do people think it will last before the inevitable cancellation?

Not long if you carry on like that.
Who's gonna wanna start reading it with you being overly optomistic.

What do you guys expect from someone who has JJJ as his avatar? Heīs gotta be an ass! :D
I heard sales are down, so a cancellation isnīt that unrealistic but I enjoy that title, so few more issues are welcome.
Well, I think it will be 12 issues ītill the fat lady sings.

(105) MAJESTIC
08/ 2004: Majestic #1 (of 4) -- 30,881
09/ 2004: Majestic #2 (of 4) -- 24,163 (-21.8%)
10/ 2004: Majestic #3 (of 4) -- 21,767 (- 9.9%)
11/ 2004: Majestic #4 (of 4) -- 20,221 (- 7.1%)
12/ 2004: --
01/ 2005: Majestic #1 -- 26,149 (+29.3%)
02/ 2005: Majestic #2 -- 19,569 (-25.2%)
That's a stiff drop. Two issues in, MAJESTIC already sells below the numbers of the limited series that trailed it. WildStorm can't be happy with this performance.
This book is toast in three, maybe four months, unless there's a drastic turnaround. Those stats and analysis are, respectively, from www.icv2.com www.comicon.com btw.

Well a bigger push might be an idea....
I had no idea there was a majestic mini, let alone a series until I read this thread.
Where is the trade of the mini?
Always a nice idea before launching an ongoing, and people like myself who only read trades might have gotten onto it.

You'll notice that my favourite current comic, BLOODHOUND, debuted with just 13,000 copies and still made it to issue 10. You'll also notice that my second-favourite current comic, HUMAN TARGET, sold less than 10,000 copies for more than a year before being cancelled.
For a DC imprint, 19,000 copies for a second issue is fairly decent. At that rate, MAJESTIC will likely last a year or more.

Why should they? I donīt see any reason why there should be a boost in sales. There wonīt be an awesome creative team on that book anytime soon and sales are what they are...not that great.

A big problem was also that the first issues of the mini and of the current series were really not that good at being introductions to the character. The mini span out of the Superman titles, while the current series is a direct sequel to the mini.
The first issue of this series, did not do much beyond giving Majestic's name to the new reader.

What they need to do it go deeper into the character? Why does he think the way he thinks? Powers? Friends? extra. Give him a real intro.

What are the stories like? Is it like watching Superman in the Wildstorm universe, with its adult content and language?

Not really. There is a much different feel to him. The stories are fun and intelligent. You can't wait to see what is gonna happen next. I hope in the second arc they give more into about him.

I think he is a little reminiescent of a pre-crisis Superman. I like this series a lot . The fact that most of it has taken place in space just increases my enjoyment.

Yeah. I would agree with the little. I mean he is just pulling powers out of his butt. It taking place in space is cool to me also. Can't wait to see that they will do with him.

It is a pretty good book with solid art. It does remind me of pre-crisis Superman as well. That said, I do wish they would concentrate on a supporting cast to help make the character more relatable.

Yeah. The supporting cast is something else that is missing.

I enjoyed his Ed Mac series and kinda enjoyed his last limited series, but this most recent one is just BLAH.
Worse and worse. I had to drop it.

I like the parallel character that he is reminiscent of Superman but different too. He is royalty whereas Superman is not. Majestic crosses the line of killing if need be. DC should be making this edgier.
The art is really nice in kind of a European way. The colors are wonderful. Yes, I too really like that it's in space and has a cosmic feel to it. The sci-fi team of Abnett & Lanning, DnA, are definite pluses too as I have liked almost everything I have read by them, esp LSH.

I've been here for a long time, I just don't post that often. Most of my posts have been deleted from pruning. I only had about 120, though.
I had another name a few years back, but it got deleted when they switched servers or something, that kind of sucked. Had about 700 posts with that one.

have you checked out Resurrection Man?
That was pretty awesome.
They also did the Jet miniseries. That's Backlash's daughter, formerly called Crimson.

Yes, I liked it but knew a resurrection theme would not last. I'm glad to see it has worked for Hawkman.
They also did a really good cosmic one shot over at Marvel about 10 years or so ago but dang if I can remember it now !

I don't know what you mean by "deleted from pruning," but I know you've been around for a good while. That doesn't change the fact that you ARE makin' first impressions, whenever someone encounters you for the first time.

Well, once threads have been deleted due to age or size, moderators and administrators delete them to free up space on the server. They actually slow down the message board just by existing.
Once they're deleted, it does 3 things: makes the board run faster, lowers post counts, and frees up server space. That's what "pruning" is called. The term comes from when you prune trees, cutting off useless branches that won't bear proper fruit and just suck vitamins from the rest of tree.

Given that DnA are doing a really good job with it, I expect it to be around for quite awhile. Superman's been in print since 1938, so I'm nor really sure how inevitable a cancellation is.

The art is great too and the biggest appeal to me, the single thing that stands out the most on this title, is the lush, beautiful colors ! I've never heard of Carrie Strachan or Randy Major, but many can they flash some beautiful palettes !
I hope against hope this title hangs on. Most of my picks die, like Bloodhound, Stormwatch, WildCATS, Chase, Challengers of the Unknown, etc.

I would highly suggest getting the TPB to the first Wildstorm series about 6-7 years ago. I think it ran 9 issues or so (don't know if the Trade collects all 9 issues), but it was real good. That will give you a better idea of the character and how different he is from Superman.

I THINK the tpb only collects the Ed Mac issues.
After he and Casey left, I think Alan Moore might've taken over, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, those issues aren't in the tpb, as far as I remember. That may be for the best, as they'll probably just confuse people more than anything else.
I certainly don't fully understand them.... but I ain't sellin'em. ;)
I've got the issues and the tpb. I couldn't help myself. That's good stuff, man. The extra issues are good by association (not that they were all bad, anyway).

The first TPB has the Wildstorm Spotlight on Majestic by Alan Moore(in continuity) and the first 6 issues which were drawn by Ed McGuiness.
The new TPB will have the 3 appearances where he replaced Superman, and the DC 4 issue miniseries. 7 issues total.

I think you're thinking of another Superman knock off, Supreme, that Alan Moore made great over at Extreme / Arcade / whatever imprint Rob Liefeld had that under.
XerxesTWD
04-23-2005, 06:35 PM
I'm not.
Alan Moore wrote 12 issues of Wildcats and a Majestic one-shot. He's the one who put Majestic on the team.
And I don't see either of them as "knock-offs".
Knock-offs are what is created for one storyline so a character can beat them up.
Like the fake Avengers in Authority, or "the Maximums" in Superman/Batman. That Loeb, a phenomenal hypocrite.
Characters that get their own title and develop relationships of their own, but are clearly inspired by another popular character are homages, not mere copycats.
