Fantastic interview man, alotta insight on mike's early years. It's comforting to know that he went through all these phases and was not just where he is now at the age of 25.

-so much info compiled into one article- very good.

Nice interview with some new stuff! I had never heard his private journal before. I'd love to thumb through that for an hour or two. Thought for Mike and CBM: Include some journal entries in the next sketchbook. Even the passages of self doubt, maybe especially the passages of self doubt would be inspiring to young artists and creators.

Good interview! It's always interesting to read about how somebody starts to do whatever he does, about influnces etc..

Has there ever been a Mignola interview in The Comics Journal? I have quite many of them but can't remember was there ever anything about MM (except Hellboy movie review)...

He was saying that he was glad that Mignola wasn't as good as he is now when he was 25.

Sweet interview, Supreme Egg.

Don't know about Comics Journal but Comic Book Artist #23 is still readily available with a lengthy, liberally illustrated Mignola interview which is the main story of the magazine. Every fan should have it.

Perhaps a Journal just about Mike's self-doubts? Might make all of us still trying to break into the comics biz feel better about those days when we feel like every other artist is better than we are :p

That's an excellent interview. I also like the bit about the bum who dances for prunes. :)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who loves Craig Thompson and wants to bear his children.

Did I type that out loud?

Great interview! Even though most of the material was the same as what has appeared in his earlier Comics Journal and more recent Comic Book Artist magazine interviews, anything Mike says still holds interest for me. I especially liked the parts where Mike was very candid about his feelings of inadequacy as an artist in the early days. The part about Mike now having a better handle on how to attach a hand to a wrist or put a pair of pants on a guy, were both priceless little misives :o

(I'd explain that, but I'm drowsy on some fabulous Quebecois beer at the moment and headed for early bed time. think of it as a weird Zen koan.)

Really, I'm flattered! You're making me blush! But, ah.... my name is "John", not Craig. :D

Thanks for sharing the interview.

And to respond to Mike's statement, YES, I will always be interested in an Art of Mignola book whether it's ten or twenty years down the road.
