View Full Version : The PSP...is it worth paying $250?

I got my XBox for cheaper than that damn PSP. I will not buy that until it goes down to $100. It's an awesome handheld but it's way too damn expensive. It may have awesome graphics and such but I bought my Gamecube and my Gameboy Advanced SP for $258 total. That's craziness. You can buy two good consoles for the price of the PSP.
And the DS is less than half that price...

The only reason the PSP appeals to me is because I grew up playing Playstation and the controls are familiar. I won't buy the DS because the controls are weird. I love the Gameboy series and have every single one except Pocket Gameboy and DS.

The controls for most games are exactly the same, d-pad and buttons. The touch screen is often used like an analogue stick on a console, to make movement more precise.

Why have it? With Metroid it made the controls painstakingly hard to figure out. But Wario is a game that I had fun with. What is the second screen even used for in most games? I know you said it made movement more precise but what els does it do. Surely that's not it's only function.

In games like Warios, and that surgery one it's used to actually let you "do" what's needed in the game.
And the Metroid controls are easy, screen to aim/change weapon, d-pad to move, shoulder to fire.

How would we know, UK realease is not for a while yet. Also, The PSP does more than just have a gimick and play games. Also you don't only get the console with that $250 package you get a load of extra's as well.
But People on Ebay UK are stupid, they were paying £200 for one I saw. $250 coversion at the moment is ont about £140-50. they are being over charged.
Anywho, it's up to the individual person really, and what they want.

Well that shows that the old proverb is right. Foolish people are soon parted with their money. Anyways, you could just preorder and pay 140 pounds for it.

But the main thing that's separates Nintendo from Sony is the fact that Nintendo has a whole bunch of cartoony games, while Sony gets the games with good graphics. I'll concede that Gamecube has Resident Evil, but not for long if sales aren't good.

You look at the games I own and most of them are cartoony. I buy games because I like them, but I also like realistic graphics. I have all the Jak and Daxters, I even have Animal Crossing, so don't tell me to buy games based on fun factor, because that's exactly what I do.

Judge by gameplay, not by graphics(Metroid Prime and Windwaker are some of the best examples of what the Cube can do).

Yeah, the parts that I played were more weird than complicated. I never really understood them. I bet if I played them now I'd prolly change my mind because I have more of an attention span. I didn't like it because I couldn't sit down and play for a long time. Besides I rented them and I didn't like the parts I played so I'm just judging on the parts I played.

Oh, and Windwaker's cartoony style gave it a more realistic look than the other Zelda games because of all the expressions and game effects(wind, water, etc.)

Ocarina of Time was made in 1998 and Majora's Mask came out a year later, and they were both for the Nintendo 64, so, how old were you then? I was only 11-12 years old back then.

The debate of Nintendo is one I will fight to my dying day. Exactly what is more realistic about the graphics in Ratchet and Clank compared to a Nintendo game? What in god's name are you talking about? Cube smokes PS2 on graphic quality and despite X-box people ranting about how powerful their machine is their graphics certainly don't look noticeable better.
Anyways if more shadows and techy look crap = more realistic to you than you have my sympathy.
Edit: as for PSP not likely. I don't give my GBA the love it deserves as it is, over-priced gadget is not in the budget and if I'm gonna start buying sony stuff I ain't starting here.

Graphics do not make a game, everyone knows that, that's why PS2 sales are more than Gamecube's and X-box's sales worldwide. Overall more volumn of quailty games, fair enough it has it's crappers but that console doesn't.

My PS2 was a gift and I bought XBox and Gamecube with my money, yet the only one that stays in my room and gets played every day is Gamecube. I have addicting games for GC and I like it that way. Don't get me wrong I love PS2 and XBox but for fun factor I go with Gamecube. That and their controllers don't break easily. My brother broke 4 PS2 controllers in 6 months. He's a dumbass, but if the design is good that would never happen. I've had the same two GC controllers for about three years. I throw them when I get mad but they have never broken on me. That's why I will always go with Nintendo on handhelds because they've had that market cornered since the early 90s.

You know what, even though I love my gamecube, GBA, and DS, im done trying to defend Nintendo systems. It's their own damn fault. They dont market to anyone older than 12, even though their games are ageless. They are going to lose to the PSP, and you know why? Because most people dont even know about the DS. I have yet to actually see someone with a PSP, but it's spring break I am sure once I go to school I will see a bunch of rich kids with PSP's.
But as far as advertising goes you cant say that the PSP isnt doing a much better job. When ever I watch a show like say "pimp my ride" or "Smack Down" the PSP commercial is always on. The commercial it self is great, the music, actors, and placing all express freedom, a certain age of maturity, and not to mention pure coolness. The commercials are very persuasive to their target market.
Also I don’t know if Sony paid for it or not but the last South Park was actually about the PSP.

I realize I'm a little late to the party on this, but let me drop in a piece I put together for my newsbox the week that I got my PSP. For the disinterested, the summary is that I feel the PSP will do for handhelds what the PS did for consoles a decade ago...change what we've come to expect from them:
--------------------------------------
To nobody's surprise, the Sony PSP launched stateside on Thursday, and as far as I'm concerned, the face of portable gaming has been forever changed. The capabilities of this tiny monster are more than impressive; playing games on this thing seems almost as if you've reached forward in time two years and brought back something you shouldn't have. Mind you, the launch library was full of many sequels and not much in the way of truly original content (Lumines being a great exception to this caveat), but even reimaginings of classic franchises such as Twisted Metal, Wipeout, and Ridge Racer seem far too good to be running on a tiny handheld. I personally haven't felt this impressed with a game system since the original PS debuted a decade ago... sure, the Dreamcast and Xbox impressed me with great graphics and some compelling games, but for some reason the PSP seems to make gaming a whole new experience for me all over again.
Outside of the near-PS2 quality graphics (there are some major limitations to find with for with an eye for it), one of the things that caught me off guard was the quality of the sound. The speakers on this little thing are amazingly clear, and games like Darkstalkers haven't sounded this good since they first appeared in the arcade; the included earphones can heighten the experience as games like Ridge Racer support directional sound. All things considered, I would've never imagined a handheld having sound this robust, and I'm suitably impressed.
Sadly, it's really not a good time to be a Nintendo handheld right now. As interesting as the Nintendo DS is in it's promise of unique touchscreen applications, the relatively lengthy game drought and numerous delays for top-tier titles for that system make the PSP's launch lineup look absolutely stellar by comparison. I've gone on record as saying that the PSP would leave the DS in the dust; a day after the system's launch, I'm going on record again: I'm sure of it. Sony's delivered an absolutely amazing piece of hardware that, knowing my luck with PS2s, will crap out in about seven months. Seriously though, the PSP really has to be seen, heard, and played to fully appreciate, and I'm willing to bet that if you give it a try, you will. Comments? Feel free to post a message to the forum.

Me, for instance, I trust the stability and the quality of Nintendo handhelds, so I'm hesitant about buy any handheld NOT Nintendo. I'm thinking about it, but I want to be able to test it.
USA Today ran a story today (ill find a link later, im sure its on there site) about the sales, and it broke down like this.
It wasn't as successful as they assumed, but that doesn't mean it did bad.
It wasn't a sellout by anymeans, as 2/3rds of all stores reported they had plenty left in stock, but, that means 1/3rd sold out, which isn't a bad number at all.
So it missed expectations of being a huge explosian, but it didn't do bad.
Also mentioned that complaints about screen problems and lack of advetising of games (Cough...told you so) as well as consumer misunderstanding of what it does, may lead to sales taking a big drop off.
But thus far, that is all speculation.
So, in the sports analogy, it didn't knock it out of the park, but sony got a double with a possiblity of stealing third.

Not bad considering it was $250.

the renting capabilties of UMD movies will prove to be useless and will render the idea of a portable game/video system useless...

I have no intention of buying one. I'm sorry- but $250 for a hand held system is complete bs. And the games alone are $50! I can find regular PS2 games cheaper than that.
Don't get me wrong- it looks nice, my friend bought one last week, and the DVD playing was really good. Clearer then my TV actually. But the fact is- you have to buy DvD's specially for it. Crap. And for $250, I shouldn't be watchign ym frined whip the mirror cause it picked up another smudge. hell for $250-it should clean itself.

Maybe they should start renting them out at Blockbuster like they did with N64 and PS1 and 2. Only problem there is that someone would steal it.

Don't people abuse those systems though?

Prolly, but if they break them they pay full price for them. Maybe even more.

USA Today ran a story today (ill find a link later, im sure its on there site) about the sales, and it broke down like this.

I'm not really much of a gamer (I basically only play Gran Turismo), but I know I'm waiting for Gran Turismo Mobile to be released before buying it...
That, and I'm getting it because of the geek chic-ness of it.

The only games I play on PS2 are the Jak and Daxter games and I would buy a portable for just those 3 games if they decide to put them on PSP. It's not worth it when you can buy PS2 for less and when PS2 is a better machine.

I got mine today. I just finished watching Spider-Man 2 on it and I'm convinced it's the greatest thing ever. It's definitely worth it.

I have yet to meet anyone who didn't want one after spending 15 minutes with it. Hell, I was skeptical up to the day I picked it up, and having been a vocal critic of Sony's hardware in the past I have to say that the PSP has impressed me in ways unimaginable.

Plus, as a bonus, you can use the infamous "UMD flying out" bug as a UMD/Shuriken catapult to hurl razor sharp discs at people you don't like.
Seriously: I'm based in Scotland, and rumour has it, Sony will not be able to release it here untill September :-( I saw one at work on Saturday. The local Sony rep was showing it off (I work in a video games store) and I was mucho impressed.

That seems to be a prototype issue or something; I've put mine through its paces and have never had that issue crop up. It's a bit more durable than I expected; my headphones got caught on my arm and the system took a 3-foot-header onto a hard tile floor as if flew off my computer desk, and after turning it back on it worked fine. I've had no problems with it before or since.

Jesus, 600,000 * $250. MUCHO $$$.
Jesus, 600,000 * $250. MUCHO $$$.
Well, minus what it cost to make, which was probably a lot if the lowest they could get the price was 250, and minus advertising, which was moderate so it probably didn't matter.

Well with the price at $250 + tax that has to be like $100 to produce a PSP. But then again the right price for something is the highest amount that someone will pay.

You knwo what i noticed about the psp commercials?
They don't actually show the games, nor does it explain what the psp is.
If i saw those ads, and didn't already read game magazines, id assume it was an mp3 player.
Actually watch the commercials, they show 4-5 different games being played. plus its called the PSP anyone who would buy this would know it's a gaming system.

For real. Don't the initials stand for Portable Sony Playstation or something to the tune of that. I saw the commercials and just saw PSP on the screen and knew it was the new Sony handheld.
