View Full Version : Would you pay $25,000 for a comic book?

Would you pay $25,000 for the comic book that introdues Spiderman, which is in mint condition certified? I recently saw this occur on eBay. I think this is the craziest thing I have ever seen. For $25,000 you could buy a nice brand new car. That's an unusually high figure for a damn comic book. Write in with your opinions.

if you could afford a $25,000 comic it's likely you would have a Porsche in at least one of the garages... and a Viper in another, and a Bentley at your other house.

If I had the money... err... maybe. I'd feel incrediblly guilty spending that much money on a comic you can get a reprint of for a fraction of the price when it could be going towards charity.

If I had that as pocket change, yep, I would.. I would probably find the first appearence of the Flash as well.

I guess my answer would be, maybe. Not for Amazing Fantasy #15. I've read that story. Having the original wouldn't change that. If there were a comic I REALLY wanted to read, I had nothing better to do with the money, it wasn't available in any other form, and I had nothing else on my reading plate, I might.

Yeah, if I had $25,000 as pocket change I would buy a lot more than a damn comic book. I would rather have the remake. The guy that bought it is prolly a real comic geek because thats the only guy that would pay that much for it. Either that or one of the editors that made the original comic who just lost his. Ultimately it has to be someone that had $25,000 burning a hole in his pocket.

Hahahahahaha! I have trouble justifying one or two complete books to myself every month or so.
So no.
But if I did have enough cash to throw away 25 grand I would seek out a writer and artist and tell them the outlines of one of the stories that is roaming around in my head and say to them to make it so. And make it good.
Then sell it to you guys and do it again with teh profits!
:D
Edit on second thought I would probably just buy a boat. A bigish one and sail around like capt ron.

Completely impossible! A 20 foot boat costs $40,000 brand new. You could buy a nice dinghy for $25,000. Sorry to ruin your plan.

Mebbe I could get a used one on ebay. Im sure the guy who bought the spiderman issue has some sort of dingie laying around that I could get off of him. Cheap!

I'm a collector. Amazing Fantasy 15 is essentially the Holy Grail of Spider-Man collections.
It has no practical purpose. I wouldn't read it, or even touch it. I would get it for the pure sake of being able to say, "I have Amazing Fantasy 15." Even if that doesn't mean anything to anybody else, it means something to me.

That's cool. I don't understand the whole "collector" mentality, but I understand that you have it.
I'd have to pass on this one.
Even if I had that much excessive wealth and 25k was a drop in an incredibly large bucket for me, the book has been reprinted too many times for me to justify dropping that much money on. I guess I'm just more of a comic reader than I comic collector; if it were a book I was interested in that I couldn't find anywhere else, reprint or otherwise, to read, it might be a different matter.

No. That is 1/3 of my yearly salary. I cringe about spending that much on a freaking car.
I would never spend over $50 on a comic, unless it was a great GREAT deal.

I'm with you Leeds. $25,000 is a huge amount of money and people that pay that much for a damn comic obviously don't know the value of a dollar, because they make too much of it.

I still got my amazing fantasy 15 issue , handed down from generations of readers to another in my family . However we are no collector in the pure sense of the word . We just keep our old comics to read , not as some trophy to never touch .While i like good paper and inks , i mostly care about the content , not much the media itself .
So no i'd never buy such a thing azt 25000$ , even if i didnt have it already . That topic even makes me wonder how much i could get from my amazin fantasy issue , even if not mint .

I bet you could get at least $5,000 maybe up to $10,000. If it's in good condition maybe between $7,500 and $10,000.

Yeah, I'd have to pass on this one. As others have said, if 25,000 was chump change for me it could slide to a maybe but it'd still be highly unlikely, given that I would spring for a re-print. Basically, I'm thinking the only case where I'd fork over the 25,000 would be if I could offord to throw away that much money, there was no other way of obtaining the comic, and obviously it would have to be a quality comic book.

If I had expendable money (which I don't), I would eagerly purchase a Near Mint copy of Amazing Fantasy #15. Like it's been said, that particular issue is the Holy Grail of Spider-Man comics and arguably the most important Marvel comic of the Silver Age.
Spider-Man was one of my favorite superheros when I was younger, and I remember thinking what an experience it would be to own this comic.

HELL NO!
As a huge comic fan, with Spidey being my favorite, AF 15 is way down on my "List of things to buy when I strike it rich". I mean, sure, if you have MILLIONS of dollars you dont know what to do with, then sure it would be cool to have, but not in my lifetime.

damn straight. i consider myself a collector, but not a collector who plans to sell his books one day. maybe i'm more of a completist who just has a huge thing for Spidey. if i had the money to burn that and a lot of early Amazings would definately be high priority on my shopping list.

The value of money fluctuates over time. 50 cents from 50 years ago is probably like ten dollars now. The price of living will go up the person will sell the comic 20 years from now for lets say $100,000. That $100,000 20 years from now would only be $25,000 at the current time. So, the only way I can see him turning a profit is if he goes and sell it for more than $25,000 in the next couple of years.

I would not pay that much for one comic book.
Comic's have no real value for me I just like to read them. If I had enough money that I could casually buy a comic for 25G than I woulud buy reprints of every Marvel comic and Marvel/DC crossover ever made. Id build a library in my home, with an electronic database, and a hot librarian to boot. That way when ever I wanted to read any comic all I would have to do is go to my library bang my hot librarian and afterward she would go get my comics.

an Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 9.4 that went for $86,250 (http://www.heritagecomics.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=806&Lot_No=5073&src=pr)
I've also seen an FF #1 in 9.4 go for $125,000.

Oh yeah? Take a look at this. This is without a doubt, the HOLY GRAIL:
Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) will offer the White Mountain copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, CGC NM 9.4 (http://www.heritagecomics.com/common/auction/preview.php?SaleNo=816&LotIdNo=39103&type=temcomics041305b) with off-white to white pages, featuring the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man, in their upcoming Signature auction, to be held May 18-20 at the New Yorker Hotel in New York City.
"This is one of the finest copies of this landmark book I've ever seen," said Ed Jaster, Director of Acquisitions for HCA. "The White Mountain Collection, originally from new England, was an assemblage of comics from the 1950s and 60s which are renowned for their exceptional condition. Many collectors view the White Mountain books as comparable in quality to the legendary Mile High comics of the Golden Age, and this book in particular certainly lives up to that high standard."
"When this copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 was first sold in a Sotheby's sale in the early 1990s," continued Jaster, "it fetched a record-breaking price. Since then, it has been part of some of the hobby's most impressive collections, and we're proud to offer it now. Stunning condition, brilliant page color, exceptional gloss... this book has it all. Couple that with Stan 'The Man' Lee's liltin' lyrics and 'Sturdy' Steve Ditko's delightful drawings, and you've got a breathtaking book that can't be beat, effendi!"
"Of course, I don't have to expound on the effect that Spider-Man has had on popular culture. With 40 years of comic book adventures, a long-running newspaper strip, a TV series, two blockbuster feature films (with a third on the way), not to mention a plethora of licensed products bearing his webby image, this book should certainly set your Spidey-sense atingling if you have any interest in comic books, mass media, pop culture, or just Old Webhead himself."
This copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 has a pre-auction estimate of $150,000.

Yeah, I'd spend $25k on a comic book IF...
...I had about than $50k lying around not doing anything so I could give another $25k to charity.
So its a pretty damn big 'if'.
I'm a collector. I don't have unlimited funds by any means, but I have some available thanks to the job - I mean, its got to be good for something, right? - At the moment though, I'm way off that issue. I'm working my way backwards through the Spider titles. I have a few missing Web and Spec issues to get ahold of, and I have a pretty complete run of Amazing back to #121 (still a few gaps - like #129; that's the next big expense.) I'm also working back through UXM (about #130), Avengers (about #150) and FF (about #230 - I'm a bit behind).

Cool. I've already got a ton of Hulk's, but they are all over the place. I'd like to get into the Avengers, but I'm also trying to get as many Spidey appearrances as I can. I'm lookin' for a reasonable SS #14 now. I figure if I ever try to get and Avengers run I'll just go back until the Essentials take over.
DD's aren't too hard to get, besides the 1st 7 issues. Very few keys. 100 and 104 can be a pain, so can 81 (the $.25 issue, and 1st Black Widow team up).

I paid about $8,000 for a complete run of Spider-man on Ebay (#1-441). That works out to be about $20 an issue. So I don't know if I'd shell 25k for an AF 15. Probably if I had it. But I'd probably try to get it cheaper somewhere else.
I'd certainly SELL one for 25k. Don't know if that means anything.
