i was reading the cap issues in which he replacedsteve as cap. i like how the writer made him out to be psychotic after his parents were slain. we didnt see much of that side of his character in AWC. and in new invaders, his character is more psychotic than in AWC but it is different. i think the best USAgent i've read is in an avengers annual back up story. i dont recall which issue number it was but it showed how far this man's mind is gone.

I liked when he was portrayed as an a-hole in WCA the best. I am not reading the New Invaders, is he written as an a-hole in it?

I enjoyed USAgent in Byrne's Avengers West Coast.... That is the real USAgent for me....but the recent stint in New Invaders was good in issue #8!

Yeah, thing about Walker, the more of a standoffish jerk he is, the better the character is. I think it was in Roy THomas' AWC where he beat the living crap out of Hawkeye? I think that was probably the height of his portrayals. That or some of the backup stuff in Cap, like where he finds out he murdered the Buckies.

i think the insane captian america storyline would work will in an alternate timeline where george bush jr. is president of the marvel united states of america.

I think the best story was the Termantrix Objective. he was protrayed as cap's equal with a bad additude. That was actually one of the first Avengers comics I ever bought.

his worst portrayal came in his own limited series (his first one).

About the only time I could even stand him was in his mini when he got the new badge-type shield, and even that's pushing it.

Just about every appearance he's made has had me wishing someone would just kick his ass and toss him in a dumpster. He's particularly loathesome in the current Invaders series to me.

i didnt read his second mini (the one with the new shield).
im loving him (pause) in new invaders. every team needs a total jerk like that.

Well yeah, but that's the point. He's the dick character. Gyrich with super powers.

And sure, Right and Left Winger might have died in the hospital, but it was because of the burns Walker gave them. Or at least one of them, the other comitted suicide because the burns were so painful. I don't know how that would work out in a court of law. But just because they didn't actually die on the scene, didn't mean that Walker didn't murder them.

I have no problem with ******* characters, but I don't think Walker's done well as such. They keep trying to play him both ways half the time, making him an "asshole" with a heart of gold.

My biggest problem, I suppose, is when he's on a team. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would put up with him.

Hawkeye's an ass, but he's a fun ass. Walker's just an annoying turd to be dismissed, to me.

When he was on the WCA, it was a government mandate thing. Hell, for a while there, he was kinda sorta the leader of the team. Not that anyone really listened to him.And he actually was kicked out at one point, but IIRC, proved his worth a little later on.

The real question is why Stark would keep him on with Force Works. But it was probably part of his plan to kill all the Avengers. Stupid Kang.

None of them.
Unfortunately Marvel's sop to its conservative fans is a proto-Ultimate-Cap, who also just happens to be mentally unstable. Of course, the idea that a patriotic superhero could be conservative, and at the same time NOT be mentally defective is a non-sequitor to left-wing fans...

StoneGold calls for the Byrne mind-boggle:

ARRRGH! I actually liked Byrne's WCA/AWC in general, but that part made absolutely no sense to me. First he shows up on the doorstep saying he's been assigned to their group, and the next he's claiming to be the leader. Um, first of all, John, they settled that WAAAY back (you DREW it, remember?). The govenment wasn't allowed to mandate membership. Secondly, they weren't ever allowed to decide who the leader was, as far as I could tell.

I DID like how they handled him there, though. "Yeah, whatever..." and went about their business. :)

The real question is why Stark would keep him on with Force Works. But it was probably part of his plan to kill all the Avengers. Stupid Kang.

Immortus. :p

And if that's your only question about Force Works, you're a better man than me. :evilsmile

His best appearances were in Avengers West Coast, or West Coast Avengers, or the times when he guest starred in Captain America, but not really in the time that he replaced Steve Rogers as CA. All his solo stuff has sucked. I wish someone would get his character right.

I liked the scene in WCA where he's speaking to photos of his dead parents. I was like, "Wow! I actually feel a bit of sympathy for this nutcase."

Maybe Marvel can make him do a heel turn, and he can be a bad guy for awhile, then turn good again and become more popular. Why do I equate everything with pro wrasslin' ?

That was his original apperance in a nutshell, which I always liked a lot. Although, they were some of the first comics I ever got to read, so I may be a bit biased.

Nobody can really figure out what to do with him, seems like, but everyone likes that costume so he keeps getting mentally reshuffled to fit in with new roles. His original character was very worthy of sympathy, and not at all a one note asshat. Guess we'll have to wait for the Ultimate version to get another decent take on him.

You're expected a decent take on the character from the Ultimate line? You poor deluded fool.

That's OK, USAgent started off as a wrestler, back when he was the Super Patriot, with the Buckies.

I think he should have been a villian, the ultimate "ugly American".
You ought to be reading the last two issues of the New Invaders! You got him pegged!!! ;)

When it comes down to it, John Walker is a good supporting character in a book, but a poor protagonist. Marvel has had a longtime (bad) habit of taking fair-to-good supporting characters and giving them their own books (Nomad, Foolkiller, Venom.... the list goes on.)
