Because you know what's going to happen, right? They're supposed to kill off a couple of GLA'ers, and someone is going to start bitching about how dare they kill off Doorman.

The first page I assume is to let readers know this isnt formerly known as justice league or she-hulk humor i suppose. the mystery member is a guy called grasshopper that ive never even heard of. is this a new character or what? does anyone know? i thought the first few pages werent laugh out loud funny but i did find it amusing nonetheless and really look forward to the rest of the series. I really enjoy Dan Slott's writing and hes quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

So, is that why Mister Immortal is immortal? He's got a knockoff of death looking out for him?

Only the first three issues are confirmed to have a dead GLAer in them, and that's from Slott himself. Plus, there's always Squirrel Girl and the Grasshopper.

Nah.
It reads like refried John Byrne, circa Sensational She-Hulk, with an extra dose of gore and less laughs (and check out that potshot at the fanboys...nothing like insulting your core audience to have a runaway smash hit, eh? ;) )
Slott is grossly overrated, IMO.
I enjoy his She-Hulk,but it makes me smile, not laugh , and I think this brilliance that some people keep talking about is noting but hype...

Cool with that.
I just don't think it's cool for Dan Slott to express his own personal contempt for the fanboys through his characters.
What, Is he angry at them for not buying his She-Hulk? ;)
Paradox
03-30-2005, 11:45 PM
I think it's fine, because it was funny! Squirrel Girl's "Uh-oh.." was priceless.
I think the people he's referring to take things far too seriously, which is always an opening for "pot-shots". It's one of those "if this upsets you, you might want to step back and take a little look at yourself" kind of things to me.

That was pretty low of Dan Slott.
I was hoping to check out this book, but if that's the contempt with which he sees the fans, well, he can kiss my patootie.

something about those thirty-year old men having poor hygiene and how if those fanboys did the dangerous stuff that takes place in the GLA book, it would actually be good for the human genepool.
And that would be only if those fanboys had a chance of having sex in the first place.
Shame on you, Slott...

Might it not also be a comment on the GLA team themselves? That Slott has figured out the root of their characters is that, at the end of the day - they're all superhero wannabes! Fanboys.

Dan said (through his character) that ALL comic book fans are like that. But that's not bad...it's the other part of what the character says that irks me...
Tom Burgos makes a GOOD point here. The CHARACTER said those things. That is GRASSHOPPER'S opinion of fanboys. Tom has read many posts of mine on OTHER boards where I have proudly stated that I AM A FANBOY. I'm just a fanboy who is LUCKY enough to be getting paid for his fanfic. Really. I dare anybody out there to read SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #3 and claim that it WASN'T written by a fanboy. C'mon, I double dare you.
GRASSHOPPER obviously has a low opinion of fanboys. And yes, I wrote his dialogue. Well, guess what-- Spike Lee has written dialogue for racist white characters, does that make him racist against blacks? Thomas Harris wrote 3 novels featuring Hannibal Lecter. Does that make him a cannibal? It's so weird to me that people focus on things like the first page of GLA #1 or STU CICERO'S speech in SHE-HULK #12 and draw these conclusions. Weirder still since STU CICERO is a self-professed fan as well.
I'm sure that ANYONE who was offended by GRASSHOPPER'S comments on Page 1 of GLA #1, will get a good laugh when Page 1 of GLA #3 rolls around.

SPOILERS
Here are some of Dan's quotes from Wizard Magazine #163, about the GLAvengers.
"All you really need to know is these guys suck", laughs Slott. "Forget saving the day-they can't save themselves". "Forget supervillians-you, comic book fan, you could kick their ass". "There will be a flashback to a pre-Avengers Dissassembled adventure you have'nt seen before, with all of the classic Avengers characters you know and love in action...Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Thor, in all their Avengery goodness". "Then in issue #2, holy crap, you're going to see everybody: some guys you have not sen in a long time, some A-list, some B-list, some Z-list characters".

Which I guess goes to show that if something doesn't offend someone, it isn't really funny.
Hell, Grasshopper's CLEARLY meant to be unlikable in that scene anyway, Squirrle Girl is being cute, naive and conscientious, he's being an obnoxious ass. Thus comes comedy and/or drama, in any form.

Hey, Dan,
I got the point that it was a joke from the first page or two that appeared in the preview. I'm not sure where, but I had heard that this was a tounge-in-cheek black humor mini-series. I think most readers get it.

Dude,
Not everybody is going to have the same sense of humor. If my stuff doesn't do it for you, that's cool. There are certain things I've never found funny-- no matter HOW funny others found 'em. Like the Stooges, Pauley Shore, or the Police Academy movies. Never even got a guffaw out of me. (Except for this one where Curly got hit in the head w/ a cueball-- and then said "ow" half a minute later. That got me.) Everyone's got different tastes. Or else ice cream would only come in vanilla.

Hi Dan my names John you may remember me as the guy who you personally sold me on She-hulk here’s the quote from 6 months ago
Siddon, you are EXACTLY the fan I need to take the leap! How about it? If money's a barrier for giving the book a try-- then how about trying an issue for FREE? Here (again) is a link so you can read ALL of SHE-HULK #5 online:
So because you asked me to believe in you and the comic (and Marvel cancelled Weapon X) I tracked down and read the full run of She-Hulk. I must say that the comic was very good, and I will be reading it again when it picks up again until then I got GLA.
Now moving on from the nice stuff, here’s the negative. I understand that you don’t like it when people get offended by the stuff you write but you can’t just turn around and get offended at someone else’s er....... work.
To put into context when you think about it didn't Toni Morrison write stories with incestuous rape? Do you hate Toni Morrison sir? Are there different forms of incest and which forms do you approve of and disapprove of? Who can write about incestuous rape and it not be offensive to you? Is it fair to compare a guy like that to Toni Morrison.... well that would be as crazy as comparing you to Spike Lee or the Simpsons....ahem
Now this guy may be a horrible human being who dresses up as Hitler, bites kittens, and Tivo’s Paris Hilton shows that doesn't mean his opinion is wrong just that he’s A Kitten-biting-Hitler-Hilton-lover..
Personally my 2-cents on the matter is this, your last issue of She-Hulk was amazing, you said some really thought-provoking things about the nature of Fan-boys and the comic medium. Which made me rethink a lot of my current views on the subject. Of course you also decided to show them as being ugly annoying losers. The thing is the next issue of G.L.A. I decide to check out and what do I see, basically the same joke, comic fans are dorks....
Did the joke offend me... not really, I just thought it was cliche’d and unfunny
Do I think you have a little bit of contempt for some comic fans.... I think so
Will I be buying your comic’s.... yeah sure the rest of the 5 pages where really funny
Is Muerto Corpse really just the same guy that you have been complaining about earlier using a different screen name ... I think so
Will I be tracking down your older work on Ren and Stimpy.... I’m not drunk man
Okay, for what it is worth I found it funny, we have one character who is clearly behind us (The mighty Squirrel Girl) and one who is an obnoxious jerk (aka Grasshopper). Sadly, I find Grasshopper almost likable, such characters can be funny in the third person/First person way... as in, when he's tormenting someone else, he's funny, when I have to put up with that sort myself, I'd wanna punch his lights out. :) I kind of get the feeling that's his purpose.
And again, there's Squirrel Girl to balance Grasshopper out, and neither speaks for the writer, even if both did, it would still balance out. Heck, even Monkey Joe was clearly on the fanbase's side. :D
Anywho, that's how I see it.
Yes its me
04-01-2005, 10:29 PM
Wow, Dan Slott is my god. Between She-Hulk and GLA, can this guy be any better at writing comics!?
ColdFury
04-01-2005, 11:53 PM
Uh... wow. You mean someone took what Grasshopper said seriously?
I think the expression goes "Sir, thou doth protest too much."
It was a joke. A teasing, little joke that is well in line with stereotypes of comic book fans. I thought it was funny, and I'm am in that target audience of 26 yearold male who reads comics.
I'm really looking forward to this series! The fact that Deathurge is involved amuses me greatly, as a Quasar fan. Deathurge was the closest Quasar got to a 'nemesis' (which is a really odd thing, that).
