View Full Version : Is Gotham the DCUs Frisco?
Simply put, San Francisco is stereotypically taken as the "gay capital of the US" in my experience. (I don't condone stereotyping, btw) Given the number of gay characters introduced in the Bat-titles recently (the last 3-5 years), can we assume that Gotham is DCs equivilent?

It's more of DC's LA or The Bronx.

Yeah, I know. But I wanted to bring up the oddly high gay population in the Batbooks and this seemed like a light hearted way to do it... :o

the actual crisis this summer is going to be more like a crisis on infinite closets and dick grayson will finally come out out the closet...
followed by kyle raydner...
and in 2015 bruce wayne will neither admit or deny his sexuality and his relationship with jason todd or tim drake when accused of molestation in celebrity trial like micheal jacksons....
(batmans vs. the pedophile wasn't there a book written about that, where he saved kids?)

While it's often been used as a substitute/sister city to New York City, the old DC HEROES roleplaying game from Mayfair Games (1984-ish) made Gotham sound more like Boston with Metropolis being the closer NYC-ish city.
I'll admit the title is probably too witty, and a bit abstract. But I'm really curious as to why Gotham has such a high number of significant gay characters, compared to the rest of the DCU. Sorry for the confusion. :(
BTW, I always saw it as the flip side of Metropolis' squeaky clean NYC

I think Gotham is actually the anti-Frisco... or whatever the name of that town in Texas is where the water seems to contribute to pacifism. :p Clearly the water in Gotham is giving everyone the crazies!

I only used the contraction in the title. I put the full name in the post ;)

I don't think it has a higher gay population, it just turns out that many of the characters the books focus on are gay. I know both Renee and Maggie in Gotham. Ivey's been hinted at. Can't think of anyone else right now.

Holly in Catwoman is at least bi, and her and Renee have girlfriends who appear semiregularly.
What about Savant in BoP, and his bodyguard/henchman?

Would that make Central City to be Winsor?

Same here.
I think I got a glimpse when I saw RoboCop. If Gotham would be based on Detroit, then I believe THATS what it would probably look like.
Definately not a place to raise kids.

What's with you and "gay" threads? Weren't you the one who started the "Name a Character Who Couldn't Be Gay" discussion?

No, no, if that's the criterion you're using, then Gotham very clearly = Boston, MA. :D

I believe the standard DC line (at least since the 40s or 50s) was that Metropolis and Gotham are both supposed to be NY, but schismed; Metropolis was the shining skyscrapers and luxury of certain parts of Manhattan, while Gotham was supposed to represent its seedier, darker sections. I can't remember the actual analogous neighborhoods.
In Atlases that are infrequently published on the DCU, I believe Metropolis is in Delaware (which would tremendously increase that state's population) or Maryland and Gotham is in Jersey.

Except that it's been repeatedly established in recent years that Metropolis is north of Gotham...
Gothams New York at night, and Metropolis is New York during the day.
I don't know where Metropolis is on the east coast but Gotham has been fairly well established as being in NJ. I always go the impression that Metropolis was south, closer to DC.

anyone think the whole idea that metropolis is north is a kudo to one of the creators who was from toronto?

Gothams New York at night, and Metropolis is New York during the day.Random thought: a city that transforms into a completely different city at night would be the coolest setting for a comic book EVER.
