After the excellent Legion of Super-Heroes Companion and Best of the Legion Outpost books I bought, as well as the All-Star Companion, looks like I'll be adding:
T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Companion (http://www.twomorrows.com/books/thunder.html)
Justice League Companion Vol. 1 (http://www.twomorrows.com/books/jlc.html)
also in the Best of the Legion Outpost, an ad in the back had the All-Star Companion Vol.2, which it said would concentrate on the All-Star Squadron. It says it will be released in May, but I haven't seen it appear on the site as yet.
Does Eric still post here? Any answer on when it'll be appearing now?

I hope the JLA book will discuss Bernard Sachs. I love his inks in those early JLAs, but it seems that he's never discussed at all, anywhere.

What, no Modern Masters Vol. 5: José Luis García-López? Shame on you!
All-Star Vol. 2 has been moved back to August. You should see it in the next Previews. Carlos Pacheco did an awesome cover for the book.

I know, I know! Every month I check in and drool over the new books....Then spend extra time looking back wistfully at the earlier releases. I wish I could afford them all! :(

Thanks Eric, I can't wait to see it. :)

As good as the JLA book might be, it may never top the ultimate JLA guide done for Amazing World of DC Comics by the late Mark Gruenwald. Nearly 30 years later and i still reference it.

I've always wondered if I should pick that up. I have the Legion one which was excellent. What other "Amazing World's" would you recommend?

I recommend them all, but be prepared to pay for them. I just paid $35 for # 10 yesterday. The same dealer had just sold the Legion issue for $75.

That's the thing that's stopping me. :(
But I have been eyeing off the Super-Villains issue with the unpublished SSoSV origin. :)

Pick up the JLA issue and the "Golden Age" issue for starters. The GA issue has a nice essay/history of pre-Superman DC Comics, an essay on aging the JSA by Paul Levitz, a Plastic Man history and other goodies.
Would love to see the SSoSV story sometime.

I pick up any of those copies of Amazing any chance I get. FOOM is also good, but Amazing is better.
Anything from Two Morrows is outstanding. They have the single best output of high quality fan material that I know of. I love their Jack Kirby Collector and Alter Ego is probably my single fav fanzine of all time.
Comic Book Artist from Top Shelf is super fantastically good too. I'm really surprised more shops don't carry these. The ones that do carry them usually sell out and it's impossible finding back issues in any retail store.
Oh yeah, Gemstone's Comic Book Marketplace is pretty good too.
Yes, the All Star & Legion volumes were as good as could possibly be expected. I didn't know about the All Star Vol 2 with the All Star Squadron. I'll definitely be getting that. Hopefully, Young All Stars will be in there and maybe even Infinity Inc.

*person who works for CBA steps in*
I agree that CBA is fantastically good, but then again, I would. :) If you can't find back issues, you could always e-mail or call Jon Cooke. His contact info is midway down this page (http://www.cbanow.com/); the info should be right although the page is out of date.

Thanks Tim. I know I can order direct, but just wanted to point out that this stuff really does sell and should be in my stores. If I had a store it certainly would.

I really must concur! The quality printing and professional approach to the entire industry is breathtaking. I have every one of the Jack Kirby collector issues, and I must admit it is a guilty pleasure.
I also have enjoyed Comic Book Artist, and found Jon Cooke's work in Tomorrow Publications a good indicator of the quality he now has in Tob Shelf.
These are two very fine publications from very dependable quality publishers. Now, I've read Alter Ego in it's most recent incarnation (as a flip book) and also enjoyed it very much before it split off.
I think we're in a golden age of fazine publication here guys. I urge you to check them out!

I recently purchased the Modern Masters #3 Bruce Timm. Totally tops! It takes something really good to get $15 out of me. This publication was worth every cent!

Speaking of JON COOKE's COMIC BOOK ARTIST; I just want to wonder which comic book talent is going to be showcased in the pages of Top Shelf's COMIC BOOK ARTIST in the year of 2005, or Volume 2 #5 to #10?????????
I felt that Mr. COOKE had put too much focus in the year of 2004 on kiddie stuff like LITTLE ARCHIE (The exceptions:The Filipino guys; CHAKIN; & the SKYWALD HORROR MOOD!!!!!!!!!)
I would like to see these topics featured in future issues of CBA:
*The Comic Book Company That Refuses To Die:I am referring to AC COMICS!!!! (AC E-I-C's e-mail: BRBlack100@aol.com )
*The RED CIRCLE COMICS GROUP Part Two; 1979 to 1985; The ULTRA-HEROES are back!!!!!! (The RICH BUCKLER/ROBIN SNYDER MIGHTY CRUSDERS revival; plus the JC COMICS THUNDER AGENTS, & THUNDERBUNNY!!!!!!!!)
*JIM SHOOTER'S NEW DEAL 1991!!!!!!!!! (The early days of VALIANT COMICS!!!!!!!!!)
*Articles on Dell's 1960s-Era Super-hero flops (like "NUKLA", NEUTRO, BRAIN BOY, Dell's SPACE MAN, DRACULA, WEREWOLF, & SUPERHEROES); "FATMAN, The HUMAN FLYING SAUCER"; The M.F. Enterprises CAPTAIN MARVEL; HENRY BREWSTER; The ACG super-quartet of The FAT FURY, MAGICMAN, NEMESIS, & JOHN FORCE, MAGIC AGENT; The HARVEY THRILLERS line of books; the mid-1960s Super-Archie quartet of PUREHEART The POWERFUL, CAPTAIN HERO, SUPERTEEN, & EVILHEART; "FRUITMAN", The Archie version of "The SHADOW";& the line of comicbook titles based on the heroes of the 1980s CHAMPIONS role-playing game, HERO COMICS/HERO GRAPHICS/HEROIC PUBLISHING!!!!!
And...
*A ROBERT HUGHES tribute issue (With The FAT FURY, MAGICMAN, NEMESIS, & JOHN FORCE, as well as COMMANDER BATTLE, FRONTEIR SCOUT, TEEPEE TIM, SPENCER SPOOK, The DIZZY DAMES, The SON of FRAKENSTEIN, The GREAT SUPERKATT; SUPER MOUSE the BIG CHEESE; The FIGHTING YANK, The BLACK TERROR, & the first costmed heroine of all, The WOMAN In RED!)
If any of you like any of these suggestions; & would like to second these suggestions: E-Mail to: JonBCooke@aol.com
Thanks!
J.A.P.
P.S.: If JON COOKE already spotlighted any of these subjects in the pages of CBA, tell us at this thread!!!!!!! M'KAY!!!!!!!

It all sounds good. Even stuff I have little interest in, like the Philipino artists, Little Archie, etc are very interesting to read about. It's weird, I know.
I guess it's also weird that I like the fanzines more than most comics. As much as I love the characters and stories, I find the politics / business and creative process behind the men and women that makes the stories all the more fascinating. After reading them, I also have a better appreciation of the character and their history.
I would also highly recommend any books by Ron Goulart. He has written at least a dozen books on the subject and most are very similar but always entertaining !
Gerard Jones did a really good book with Will Jacobs too a few years ago entitled The Comic Book Heroes.

Thanks, dr_cyclops! I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I hope you'll find other books in the series to your liking as well.
Jeremy, many of the subjects you brought up are better suited for (and, in fact, some have been mentioned in) Alter Ego. Bill Black is a frequent contributor of artwork to the magazine, as well.
And just because I can now, I'd like to mention that the book I'm working on after Modern Masters Vol. 5: J.L. Garcia-Lopez is entitled, The Brave and Bold Art of Jim Aparo. Jim was the first artist I ever called my favorite, and I've been wanting to do this book for a few years now, so I'm really excited about it. (And thank you Mr. Gallaher for not spilling the beans.) The fact that Scott Beatty is writing the book makes me all the more anxious to get going on it. It's due out in October, just before my second child!

Awesome ! For those of us that grew in the 70's and 80's, Aparo's Batman is definitely one that strikes a chord. I'm disappointed that DC doesn't use him for a special project or something. Those old Brave and the Bolds not only read well but looked great under Aparo. He's long overdue for some recognition.
What's his status now anyway ?

I really get a kick out of Roy Thomas's "Alter Ego". It's nice listening to the old pros talk and remember past work...and here and there you'll get information on an artist/writer/letter/colorist/editor that you haven't heard about or read about in YEARS!
I also have a subscription to Back Issue!. I feel it's the best publication about modern comics (Bronze and Modern Ages). God bless Michael Eury and his hard work.

Thank you, Eric!
Tonight I borrowed my brother's copy of MM #2 George Perez and loaned him MM #3. Turns out I have two other TwoMorrows' publication in my collection. Alter Ego #8 and Comic Book Artist #14. There are so many Publications from this company that I want. TwoMorrows is comic fandom.
P.S.Check my other posts, to find direction to my on-line art gallery.

Jeremy, you will probably want to pick up the upcoming Alter Ego #49. The issue focuses on Carl Burgos—who happens to be the creator of the Myron Fass Captain Marvel you mentioned—and there are a few interesing tidbits about the title. Plus, there is an article on AC Comics.

Definatley.
Twomorrows is awesome.
I discovered them via a used copy of Collected Jack Kirby colector volume 2.
Now they are taking my money left and right lol.
They jumpstarted my love for Kirby all over again and its nice to read from other fans and industry pros about the King.

I spend more on TwoMorrows product than Marvel.
That's shows how much I love TwoMorrows work and what sad shape Marvel is in right now, I guess.
