View Full Version : The three B's of reading.

Today, one of my students said she didn't have a lot of time to read a book she checked out to write her book report on (Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass). That's when I told her about the three B's of reading.
"Do you have a lamp by your bed?"
"Yes."
"Then read in bed just before you go to sleep. Do you take showers or baths?"
"Baths, mostly."
"Then read in the bathtub, just try not to damage the book. Then, there's the other good place to get reading done."
"Where's that?"
"Well, let's just say some people have magazine racks in their bathrooms for extended reading time."
". . . Oh! Eww."
"See, lots of time to read right there. Those are the three B's of reading. Bed, bath, and bowl."
Where do you do most of your reading out of those?

Probably bath, out of the three. I spend most of my reading time in a comfortable chair, though.
I don't make time for reading; I have to make time for the rest of my life.

I used to enjoy reading in the bath, before I got to be 6 frickin' feet tall... if I ever own my own home, I swear I'm getting a bathtup big enough for a full-size man to actually lay down in.

Bed, trying to ignore those books I've not finished that whisper to me as I start another.
At least half an hour /45 mins every weekday, to unwind.

Actually, I usually read when I'm on break at work, since it gives me something to do. I usually unwind in front of a computer.

I don't read in bed much at all, because it's uncomfortable (not good back support). I don't take many baths, because our tub is too small (and I don't read in the tub because I'm afraid I'll drop the book, plus, that's "close your eyes and relax" time). I don't read books on the toilet, because I'm not usually in there long enough to read much, plus it's kind of icky to me.
I do most of my reading while sitting somewhere, often while I'm eating something or having a cigarette. So, no real "B's" for me! :)

I do most of my reading on the bus to and from work, and at work when I'm on break.
So that's two additional B's.

I read while waiting for the bus or the train... and I read when I'm on the train or bus. Nothing makes a good reading experience more pleasurable then public transport, the only way you can forget about the crap quality of the service, is to hide deep in a fictional world, where trains do run on time, and where there aren't busses populated with obnoxious passengers.
other than that... bowl.

I read on the floor supported by a pillow. I can't see how you could read sitting on a bowl, I'm never there long enough to think about anything let alone read.

Uhh, I beat you to break, Donald.
Do people just love ignoring me?

I read in bed most of the time, usually at night before I go to sleep but if I have nothing to do all day sometimes I'll just go lay down and read.

Well I don't know about ignoring you, but I sure do love posting before reading the entire thread!

Of the three it would be bed. I usually read a little something in bed before sleep. I can't remember the last time I took a bath (I shower frequently). I don't understand the whole bowel thing. I have no interest in sitting and wallowing in my own crapulence. I like to get on and off (the can) in a hurry.

Bed.
It's the only place I feel most comfortable reading. Plus, it's less distracting and I can't hear the television from my room.

Bed 30 minutes-2 hours a day before bed.
Bath 45 minutes-1 hour a day (if I can get away with it)
Bowl- 5 minutes a day, yet I take a book anyway; total waste of time, but still do.

I do my reading when I'm supose to be working. SInce most of my work consists of telling people what to do. I can read and do that at the same time. I also read a lot in bed. If I'm just around the house I'll lay on my stomach and read. I've spent two days straight reading when I get into a book. Mostly only taking a break for a snack or a potty break.

Bet you can't top this. I sat down and read 3 different mangas in one sitting. One was eyeshield21 with 50+ chapters, then 4 negima books, and then Kiseijuu with 50+ chapters, that was about 5 1/2 hours. My ass was asleep by the end of that. I know it sounds kinda nerdy but when I get into books I can't stop reading. I read the last Harry Potter book which is 700+ pages in 35 hours, but I took time to eat and use the restroom, even though I still read it in there too.

Of the given choices, probably bed (though I stopped reading in bed now that I moved it and have no decent back support (my room is a hexagon in shape, meaning that there will always be a gap between bed and wall.)
But the most reading I get done on the bus and train.

;) Well I usually read in bed, but I also have a real nice lounge chair with a snack tray and kids to go fetch for me.
I read in bed but listen to books (audio formats) in the tub - we have a long jacuzzi tub out on the deck that is perfect for extensive soaks and listening

Of these three choices, definitely Bed. But along with that I read quite a lot while eating. So maybe put me down for... "Breakfast (and Lunch and Dinner)".

I have another B for you............Bus. I do most of my reading when I'm going to work, a little hour by bus and what's better than reading a book then.........besides music maybe.

Letsee... of these, I'd hafta pick bed. Although, I prefer the train or something, because sometimes, it's just too easy to doze off in bed.
I don't read in the tub, because, 1) I don't take baths, and 2) It's hard for me to not get the book wet.
And if I sit in on the bowl for too long, I start to get cramps. Heh, when I was younger, I'd read three books simutaneously. One for eating, one for bed and one for bathroom. Man, I used to spend hours in there.

I'm an all three kinda man.
But that said, I don't take bath's, showers are much better.
but if I do take a bath I read, cause I find them boring otherwise.
But it should be bog not bowl.
Or bogger at least.

I used to face between 45 min. to one hour bus (each way) to get to and from work, and I must say it gave me a lot of valuable time to read. I used to chose more serious fare for the commute and keep novels for bedtime.
I find that commuting by bicycle makes reading a bit more perilous. Alas!

I do the opposite.
I go the easy read on the bus, and leave the more challenging stuff for home.

I'm a Bed-Reader myself ... I could never read a book in the bathtub.
I lent a few paperbacks to a friend years ago, and he was a Bathtub-Reader ... but he would take this 2-hour ultra-steam baths and just read the whole time.
Well, needless to say ... the heat from the tub ruined the books that I lent him. They acted like a sponge, sucked in all the moisture the pages could hold, and expanded to almost twice their normal size! The glue on the bindings was completely shot, so there was nothing left but piles of wrinkly pages held together with elastic bands.
He never did replaced them. That bastard.

I'm a tall guy, too, and my current apartment's bathtub is even more shallow than usual. Even so, I still enjoy reading in the tub. In fact, that's about the only way that I can enjoy this tub. If I was just laying there, I would be too aware and too annoyed of how much of my body is above the waterline.
During college, when I was living off-campus in my own apartment and working two jobs to support myself, I never seemed to get enough sleep. I ruined several books, including two textbooks, by dozing off while reading in the tub. My girlfriend actually bought me a waterproof (kid's) book for Christmas that year as a joke.

Now I read in bed.
