View Full Version : Art Thread: HBjr gets a date
Apologies to those who've read it and the roughness of this project that was never finished. ruta asked me to post this some time ago put I've only gotten around to shrinking it to the new standards tonight.
My current style of HBjr is certainly alot looser than this, my first work. Here's Page 3.
This made more sense when Buffy was on the air.
Hmmn. Maybe I didn't have to shrink those files so drastically.

HAHAHAHAHAAA!
That's wonderful! Squeeee-hawken! Not only the art, but the story is well done too. Suitably twisted.
Thank you!
Any more sequential stuff in the pipeline?

Yes! I always love your HB jr. toons, Tad! Finished or not, I wish you could make them more often. How about making this a Tad art thread and re-posting all the old favorites? Please, sir, I'd like some more!

Yeah, I never ever would have thought I'd see the hooks through HB's mom played up for laffs. :p
I give it a fistful of severed thumbs up!

The stuff with his mom is terribly clever. Great stuff, Tad. Bravo!

Thanks for the compliments all. Bill Wray is the reason for the kid's existence although I like Mike's quirky humorous view the most. No plans to ink, to much work for no payoff and it's time I should be putting toward professional pursuits.
So here's the rest, some sketched in an hour or less others played with in Photoshop.
One of my favorites, I'll always regret not redrawing the last panel.

You, sir, are incredible. :D
This was when we were anticipating the movie and some folks thought it was all right to illegally download because they were being made to wait.
Then there were the folks who thought HB's liking of cats went beyond affectionate.
HBjr finally gets to see his movie but has trouble with a talker.
There might be one more on my computer at work but this brings you up to date.

didn't you already post the chibi one?
It's being archived here at the Museum of Modern Tad. It was on loan to the other thread.
When I was searching for "HB Gets a Date" I found notes for a first page that started with an image of souls in hell. Pull back to see that they're in some sort of liquid with giant boulders. Go wide to reveal it's the front of a cereal box and they're floating in milk. HBjr is chowing down on a big bowl of cereal while his mom is behind him doing dishes -- with hook. Would've been a nice way to start.
No way I'm going back now.
The characters evolved naturally for me. Hellboy was the loudmouth kid, easily tempted into trouble by the bird. Abe is the sensitive one, almost Piglet, a naive innocent. Who knows what's to come?
Generally I'm happy with the last painted one, using oranges and violets mixed in with Hellboy's red. I love the painted cover of Bones of Giants which got me thinking in this way.

YAY!
Ah crap ...10 character minimum, ARRRGHHH!
-Ya just can't post a simple YAY! now can ya?
The bird was originally going to be part of the Chibi comic. He was just an onlooker until the final frame when he said, "Marry me." But it was visually cleaner and funnier without the nod to Screw-on head.

Hey don't knock it till you've tried it, if it works for us HB fans, I don't think Mike Mignola would mind it. Give it a shot tad :D We are all rooting for ya!
Thank you all for your generous compliments and the idea that my HBjr stuff should be included in a Dark Horse comic, but even if Weird Tales was an ongoing series my work wouldn't be appearing in the comic in the foreseeable future.
First off, my take on the little man isn't "edgy" enough for the tone set for the humorous WT stories. You may disagree with that tone but I think it's been very consistent and my stuff wouldn't fit. Second, my drawings barely look the same from panel to panel. I'm a long way from joining the ranks of the Comic Book Idol gang. Thirdly, I'd have to have an idea that merits inclusion. The Buffy/HBjr. story is closer to a twisted MAD magazine take than a proper stand alone. If I had an idea and the desire, I'd pitch it to Scott Allie.
Finally, I don't have the time. The comics I post are usuallly quick, fun things that I can do in a short time. The animation industry has changed to a project by project basis. My current gig should last about another year, but in the meantime I have to be writing and pitching other ideas to other studios so that I'll have something to move onto. So to do a publication worthy job on a HBjr story would take much more time than I can afford.
So thanks for the good will and I'll continue to post gags as I get them.

Tad remind me to never offer to 'slap color' onto one of your drawings...your color work blows me away..

Haven't we all learned that ruta is right about everything? I was just playing with the canvas texture and mistakenly saved it, erasing the history files. So I'm stuck with it. Two things I didn't do that are usually second nature to me: experiment with textures on a duplicate layer and put the the bg on a separate layer. Shrink the pic a bit and the texture is less "in your face."
Thanks for the compliments. They're much appreciated.

EL - if I knew what I was doing I'd gladly teach you but I just try to pick up what I can from any tutorials I find. (Plus not having to buy paint gives you the freedom to experiment)
JohnT - just following the lead of Mike, although I think it's distracting to draw a naked, huge breasted woman with no nipples... hence the positioning of her arms.
1Hellboy - I think the Buzz/Hellboy was in response to a thread comment. But EL is right as to my background.

Isn't the thing about painting all about learning color and shading theory and such?
Universal lighting... radiance... etc... it all boggles the mind.
What brush settings do you use Tad?
and have you tried the felt pen in Procreate Painter Classic?
icbm1987
That was all done in Photoshop. I generally set the brushes to half their opacity so that it interacts with what's underneath. Usually I'm in normal mode. I used the liquify brush to blend some things (mistakes mostly).
I know no color theory. I tend to shade with violets or other colors. In this painting I did a monochrome "underpainting" in blues but I have no idea if it affected the outcome. I may try a little painting switching the underpainting colors as an experiment.
My version of Painter no longer works with my operating system and Photoshop seems to be doing everything I need it to.

I was joking about posting images of Mignola's sketchbook. Didn't quote enough of that message. Morna, do you ever sleep?
Actually, I'm thinking of creating a sketchbook for next year so that I can trade it for the sketchbooks of friends. That ate a major part of my con budget this year. But it won't include Hellboy Jr. sketches unless I okay things with CBM.

Excellent, can't wait
I'm watching the Democratic convention and I'm so tired of the blatant marketing, advertising and name calling of the American political system. The primaries go on forever, the poor and disenfranchised remain unheard and anything of substance is shunted aside to make room for the latest photo opportunity.
Don't they know that there is a better way? A way to choose the strongest, quickest leader? Don't they know about...

PS. For everyone else, it's so funny... my two best friends were in this techno band some 10 years ago and they made Techno with Swedish vocals (mainly shouted vocals) and samples from several of the Swedish dubbed Darkwing Duck episodes. It's awesome, and their live shows were a blast!! They called themselves DKTRRNA which is some really wierd (and totally made-up) abbreviation of DOKTORERNA which translates as "THE DOCTORS".

YAY! Abe Jr.!! :D
Why just today I was going to ask you if you were ever going to draw him again. =O
I don't know why their personalities manifested in the way they did but in Tad's view of Jr's universe:
Abe is the innocent, naive optimist -- often a victim but sometimes fate smiles on him and HBjr gets a comeuppance.
Bird - like in the comics, often a tempter, a partner in crime to HBjr.
Lobster - a loon, spouts slogans, sees the world in black and white, knows he's always right and oblivious to their version of reality.
And HBjr is always evolving but sort of like Mike's version as opposed to Bill Wray's or at least Bill Wray on his own.

I hope Bill Wray never visits these boards. I'd be embarassed. As I've said before, it's apples and oranges. Different intents. The best HBjrs are Mike's because they're filled with that quirky humor. Mine rarely come close to that... although some of the darker ones show promise. :evilsmile
