...looking like it might be Sandman. This is from Aint It Cool (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=19747), so take that for whatever you think it's worth.

It'll be Venom.

Me too, i think it's gonna be Venom...Sam and Tobey may like Sandman, but the Big Three villains that give Spidey nightmares are Green Goblin, Doc Ock and VENOM

Not sure how I feel about this. Obviously it is, as the thread title says, to be taken with a "Grain of salt," but it looks as if Sandman may very well be Spidey's third villain which, despite the fact that I have nothing against Sandman, still comes as something of a disappointment.
But what the hey, Sam knows what hasn't missed a step yet so I'm still looking forward to another amazing movie.

The only ones to ever scare Spiderman are Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, Dr. Octopus, and Lizard. Carnage is not happening, Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus already made their moves, and Lizard is too much of a plot hole. It sadly must be Venom. That's why Electro was not in the first movie. He was not a MAJOR threat to Spiderman like any of the said above.

Venom may not even be it either.

At least it won't only be GG2. I'm all for the Harry/GG story, but I think the quickest way to kill the franchise would be to have essentually the same villain appear in the third movie, on the heals of a three year wait between the second and third movies.
Raimi and company need to deliver big, and hopefully they will. I personally think that the main villain will be either Sandman or Venom, based on how Church looks and comments about how the villain had never been done on screen before and would look fantastic with the effects (a few months ago, someone else may be able to clarify).
Ideally, I'd like to see GG2 addressed with another villain in the fourth movie, but I suspect they're going to finish the Harry/Peter story with the third movie, making me believe that Harry is going to have a hand in the villain hating Peter/Spider-Man. To that end, the Sandman may seem like an easier fit, but I'd still like to see Venom or even Electro.

Is the sandman going to be able to carry the load of a movie villian all by himself you think? Church is a good actor and all but I always thought of the sandman as just a powerful meathead.

It's possible he might just be playing a relatively minor role, I suppose. You know, a hired goon, a pawn of Harry, that sort of thing. I can't see him carrying a whole film all by himself, either (though, again - better him than Mr. I'm-Gonna-Eat-Your-Spleen-Rar-Aren't-I-Scary-Look-At-My-Tongue!).

I'd assume Harry-Goblin would be a villain as well. Possibly even the person responsible for Sandman's creation?

That actually sounds pretty plausable.

I'm inclined to believe AICN this time. Church seems more like Sandman then he does Venom. Hearing his voice come out of Venom doesn't strike me as a good fit. Sandman could end up being very cool in the movie. They might fiddle with his character to make him work for the whole movie. But in terms of visuals this could be very cool. Sandman rarely got to be used to his full potential in the comics.

And in his first couple of appearences, Spidey had a hard time beating him. They could get the same milage from Sandman being nearly impossible to punch out that Lee and Ditko did.

Yeah, even the comics started to cheat after Sandman's first appearance. Sandy would start to lose his shapeshifting power as he got tired, or Spidey would be able to hit him hard enough to explode him and knock him out. In the movie, they really will have to be imaginative to find a way for Spidey to beat him.

I need to dig out the first Essential trade, because I completely forgot how Spidey beat him in his first appearence.

"Industrial-powered" vaccuum cleaner. Because Sandman can punch out the Thing but he can't break out of a vaccuum bag.

Sandman is an expensive choice, but as this movie will have the budget to do nearly anything, then fair game.
Venom and Lizard would also be very expensive, CGI wise.

He probably will be Sandman, but he won't be the only villain in the movie. I think the Lizard is coming pop its head. Or maybe Scorpion.
