Name a character in any fiction that you think is badass and post a moment that showed his badassness.

King Piccolo(Dragon Ball): After the eternal dragon granted his wish King Piccolo killed the eternal dragon with a single ki blast.

Sephiroth(FF7): He has done alot of things in FF-7 but the one infamous deed that made him one of the best FF villains ever was that he killed Aeris.

DR Doom: any moment, ever in his continuity.

The Joker: Killing Jason Todd

Takamaru, from Hajime no Ippo.

Moment? The bit where he utterly snaps against Hawk.

Oh, and Asuma Kazuma, and the moment would be the greatest moment in fiction. See the sig.

Edit: Oops, didn't see the villain bit. Takamaru's sort of an anti-hero though...

Villains, hmm...

Hao, after pwning X-3. That'll have to do.

Sephiroth = angsty whiny git, which != badass

Real badasses:

Gatsu/Gattsu/Guts (Berserk): wields a 6 foot long sword, singlehandedly slaughters 100 men, regularly curbstomps demons four times his size, has a berserker rage that makes him inhumanly powerful

Lobo: Only character written to consistently beat Superman, is too badass for death, heaven, and hell, official titles include The Bastich of the Whole Fraggin' Galaxy

Oh come on ... you're picking people like Bane? A once feared villain who is now a joke? Hmm, He and KGBeast should form some sort of support group...

So far I'd have to go with The Master who destroyed 1/3 of the Universe just to get the attention of the remaining chunk to blackmail them.
If that isn't badass, then I don't know what is.

Ummm what? Sephiroth never whined once in the game. The only time he even acted angsty was when he found out his whole existence was a life.

Darklord Gnaag, Archlord of Helgedad — The fourth and last Darklord to ever hold the title of Archlord, Gnaag set up a trap for Lone Wolf by using the three remaining Lorestones as bait. Once he sent the hero plummeting into the Shadowgate in Torgar where Lone Wolf would have to fight his way through the Daziarn, Darklord Gnaag began his conquest of Magnamund. He developed a device that would allow the Darklords to servive indefinitely outside of the Darklands and had conquered nearly all of Magnamund until Lone Wolf returned from the Daziarn over a decade later.

You sir are retarded.

I agree that he is not whiny or angsty, but he is a momma's boy, so that detracts from his villainy right there. I would consider him more of a pawn of Jenova than an actual powerful villain in his own right.

Kefka on the other hand, was mean, power hungry, and witty, if not a bit foppish. I think he would be the better candidate for best FF villain.

It's hard to say whether it's Sephy or Jenova that's actually in control. I'm lead to believe that the Japanese version makes it a little more clear that Sephiroth is controlling Jenova, but I'm not so sure I believe that. And yes, Kefka owns; subverting the power of three goddesses for his own ends by sheer force of will is pretty damn impressive. There's no question about who's in control of that relationship. Kefka made them his bitches. Wait a second... bitches.... he's a pimp! That explains so much...

Anyway, Magus wasn't a villain the whole game, but man was he ever baddass. Baddass character design, baddass personality, baddass attacks, baddass weapon. He is what a baddass is to a normal person, to any other baddass. Other baddasses are aspiring to be like him. He had the usual angsty past, but the closest thing he ever showed to actual angst was basically mocking it. Magus rocks.

To be fair though, regarding Kefka, the three goddesses did seem to be dormant. We don't know if it took much willpower at all to take their strength once he made himself the focuses of the three statues.

And for RPG villains, I think that Zio the Black Magician is a good candidate, because even though he was obviously a flunky for Dark Force, who in turn was a mere fragment of the Profound Darkness, he still had style, charisma, mind control, and killed the leader of your party in the first quarter of the game and had slaughtered the town of one of your other party members and had successfully enslaved another one even earlier. He was a lackey and he knew it, but his loyalty to his master just made him seem even more terrifying when you finally go up against him.

Yep. The most obvious reason he wasn't being controlled by Jenova is.....

If he was, she woudl have been the last boss.

And there is also no proof.

BitVyper
03-29-2005, 12:56 PM
Not really. She could have easily just been acting through his body for any number of reasons. Besides, the last boss sure didn't look humanoid to me, unless you're talking about the -last- last boss, which was really just Cloud's perception of his own Jenova cells.

To be fair though, regarding Kefka, the three goddesses did seem to be dormant.

They were dormant before Kefka started moving them, and Gestahl, a real magic power house wasn't able to do anything beyond grabbing a little bit of power to smack down your relatively weak characters. Kefka had them figured out and under his control about five seconds after he started trying, and one year later, all of their power had been transferred to him. The only thing keeping them dormant was each other's power. Once Kefka started moving them, they were waking up, which caused the world to a'splode.

I think Sephiroth was being manipulated not controlled. Jenova wasn't taking over his mind, but it did pull his strings throughout the entire game (ie: Sephiroth thought that Jenova was an Ancient, that her people were the rightful owners of the world, that she was his mother, etc...). Even though she wasn't as powerful as he was by the end, she was still the brains behind the operation.

The relationship is almost identical to Galcian and Ramirez in Skies of Arcadia, except that Ramirez willingly gave himself over to Galcian's world view. Even though Ramirez was the last boss, Galcian was the true villain of the game. Or even FFIX; Necron was the last villain, but Kuja was the master villain of the game.

You all fail, THE most badass villain in fiction is Yawgmoth.

"For the first time in nine thousand years, Yawgmoth crossed from Phyrexia into Dominaria.

Immediately, thousands died. Everything that was alive within the vicinity of the Stronghold died instantly, only to have their lifeless bodies rise in a mockery of life and hunt the living."

I'm sorry, but crushing one minion's skull to prove a point or throwing a small child through a wall pales in comparison to killing and then reanimating everything in a 5 mile radius of you just by showing up.

Of course Darth Vader beating up his son then cutting off his hand is here, and Darth Sidious liquifying the internal organs of a spy in the Episode 3 prequal book with a wave of his hand was pretty bad ass.

Super Buu killed every single person on Earth with one attack whille on Kamis tower. Then Kid Buu blew up the Earth and about 6 other fully populated planets in about 10 minutes while searching for Goku.

punked out astro in the first meeting, literally rebuilt himself after being smucked by his maker to be bigger and stronger, Managed to build a ship of superior technology to anything the humans had, as well as setup his own feudal kingdom in the ship, and when an invasion force that's powerful enough to basically make earth's defense forces useless, sacrifices himself and takes out the big bad.

He didn't remain a villain to the end, but BlackWarGreymon was badass as all Hell. "I choose or else!" That's the kind of single-minded determination you expect from the heroes...Instead, we had this guy, who was going to destroy the world, faced with heroes who were (finally!) outgunning him...And he refuses to back down, and manages to gain the upper hand yet again through sheer determination.

Too bad they didn't include more of his badassness into the anime. Such as his body controling ability being so powerful that he felt he had to give Vash a machine that would completely disable it so he could have a fair fight.

Totoro Man

honestly, I can't include characters like "Bane" or "Doomsday" because these were characters created by a committee of editors and writers for the purpose of "shocking" readers by "killing" a comics icon that has been around 50-60 years or more.

there's something so utterly contrived about both of these characters that I personally can't consider them as an option. what's more, since they were ONLY created to one-shot good guys into death, or take them out of continuity-- it's not surprising that when the editors change roles that these characters become absolute pussies or fall into disuse.

Dr. Doom, however, has truly been kicking ass and taking names since his incarnation. of course, whenever he fails miserably he can always have it retconned as a "Doombot".

Darth Vader (which comes off like an obvious homage to Dr. Doom) was also badass. I remember thinking (when I was a little kid) that Darth Vader's voice would have worked for Doom as well.

I always thought Agent Smith in the first Matrix movie was pretty badass. he certainly got the best speeches! it's too bad that he got wasted in the sequels in favor of supporting characters I didn't care about... (at least he didn't get turned into a complete freaking pussy-whipped gimp like Morpheus! )

Clone Wars General Grievous was a truly badass villian in my opinion... yeah, I -KNOW- it's contrary to everything George Lucas wanted... but it's nice to have a SW villian who's not a back-stabbing, manipulative little pussy. he made a nice antidote to the manipulative Sideous, the treacherous Dooku, and too many of the prequel villians were so two-dimensionally evil it was nice to have a slight variation there. CW GG offering the obviously defeated Jedi a chance to have a "warrior's death" was actually really badass... especially in a SW context.
