Hey everyone-
I am conducting research on the changing depictions of race and gender in comic books. I am trying to get a good sample of comic books. I am having a hard time finding crime and horror comics published by DC during the 1970s-1990s. Does anyone know of any? Thanks!

Horror books during that time period include HOUSE OF MYSTERY, HOUSE OF SECRETS, SWAMP THING and HELLBLAZER, among others.

Crime comics from Vertigo include:
-SCENE OF THE CRIME
-JOHNNY DOUBLE
-GANGLAND
-I believe 100 BULLETS may have started in 1999. That'd be an interesting one for race and gender depictions, I would think.

Other crime books:
-CINDER AND ASHE
-MS. TREE QUARTERLY
-UNDERWORLD

Depending on how far you want to stretch the definition of "crime comic," you could also include:
-JONNI THUNDER, AKA THUNDERBOLT
-SKREEMER
-SANDMAN PRESENTS: THE DEADBOY DETECTIVES

I assume you're not looking for anything superheroey, but there's always Batman. And an awesome DEADSHOT mini-series from the '80s, which - red jumpsuit aside - is about the bleakest crime story I've read in a comic.

(Oh, and another horror title: FLINCH, a horror anthology published by Vertigo in the late '90s.)

Others include Weird Mystery Tales and Secrets of Haunted House.

Out of curiosity, what kind of project are you working on?

I believe DC's Nathanial Dusk minis would fit your crime parameters.
