I don't know if anyone have noticed the thing i am about to write about or if anyone have allready spoken on this topic on this forum but... I beleieve thatt Dave Stewart made a little mistake coloring the first issue of The Third Wish. Of course it is highly probable that i might be wrong, but if you look cloasly at the 10nth page you'll notice a small picture of a hand holding a Mohlomis medalion. it appears to be the Mohlomis hand(it is collored as if it was his), but i believe that Mignola intended it to be the hand of Hellboy. Why do I think so? First of all Mohlomi gave the amulet to hellboy on the page 9- there is no reson for him to still hold. Secondly we can plainly see that this has to be a left hand- so it is more than posiible that it IS the Hellboys normal hand. Thirdly hellboy has the amulet in his left hand in the page 11- and there was no way Mohlomi could give it to him on the page 10. concluding- the hand should be red- as it is Hellboys. Yeah... I guess thats all... I wonder what you guys will say about that... Ohhh... here is the page I refer to:

Nice eagle eyed approach to things there, but I think that you're incorrect in this case. I will give you this much, the shade of red chosen by Dave is sufficiently dark enough to be confused as belonging to Mohlomi, but if you keep in mind the coloring scheme that Dave and Mike have chosen (minimalist color unless you're calling about a specific emotion, action, feeling, etc.), the color of that hand is sufficiently dark red enough to still be Hellboy.
Good obversation, but based on the various interviews I've read concerning how Mike and Dave color Hellboy, I'm pretty certain that most panels and pages are given a fine tooth comb before they are sent to the printers and bound into an actual comic book.
Any other thoughts on this from other artists like Tad or Rick?
BTW, Happy Easter to all!! :D

I read that as Hellboy's hand being shadowed by the immense wave that's about to hit them and sweep HB into the sea.

I read it as the old dude's hand. my whole world is rocked now.

Before looking at the comic I was going to give the pat answer that because of Mike's pickiness about color, there could be no mistake. But then I checked my original.
Looks like Hellboy's hand to me, both storywise and by the knobby way it's drawn as compared to Mohlomi's hand when he offers the medallion.
And it's colored wrong. I don't buy the shadow theory or the muted tones idea because it is the same shade as Mohlomi's head in the panel above - like a photoshop eyedropper tool was used to ensure an exact match. If it was to be a shadow color it would have more red. If it was part of a minimilistic color scheme, then Hellboy's head would match. Yet another reason to anticipate the TPB.
We're all human and sometimes we look at a finished piece of art and all we can do is slap our heads and shout Homer Simpson's anthem.

...And it's colored wrong.... .
No waaay! It's totally shadow. It's foreshadowing the wave and intensifying the hugeness and scaryness of it. Brilliantly!
IMHO :p

I say "Hah" in the general direction of your leetle island! If it was in shadow there would be a bit more red in the color! And again I say, "Hah!"
IMNSHO! :p

Funny. I saw it as Mohlomi's hand, too. Confused the heck outta me 'cause I couldn't understand why he'd give HB the trinket, then take it back again..(wasn't bright enought of think of the wrong colouring thing - doh!) Was the hand on page 9 miscoloured as well, then? From the angle of the string, it look like it's being recieved as opposed to being handed over. Tad is right that the hand on page 10 is more hairy and knobby - probably HB's. I don't think I like the new colouring style...too confusing!

I saw it as Green Lantern's hand and was confused as to why there was no white glove or power ring.

Which is another reason why you shouldn't be reading while smoking "dandelions."
Okay, I've changed my mind. I'm with cure. Knobby hand - look earlier in the story when the old man presents the spider. Same hand. Then look at the earlier page when the medal is offered and the page in question looks like a call back panel, almost animated - open hand/closed hand. That would make it Mohlomi's hand, correctly colored and Cure can sleep tonight.
Hellboy gets the medal "off-panel" or magically.

It wouldn't matter if it was shadowed. Look at HB's head in the next panel--still bright red, even though one would think it would be in the 'shadow' of the wave.
Looks like me and Tad win, yo.

Well Gary thinks it is a right hand holding the bell/amulet/charm dealie. I remain unconvinced because story continuity demands that HB has the bell by the time the wave hits and it makes sense that he's gripping it as they see the wave. Funny I was just looking at his red head when you posted that... I was thinking that maybe it was a point of view thing but the hand is in entirely the wrong position for Hb to be looking at his own hand - I'm now starting to feel like it's a bit of a stretch - or maybe just a little fishy as Kahn points out. I'm hoping MM will chime in and solve the whole puzzle but he's more the kind of guy who'd smile and let us rotate in our own endless conjecture! for eternity

My .02... Hellboy didn't take the bell the first time it was offered. If you look at the very last panel on the preceding page, you can see his left hand and he doesn't appear to be holding anything. I know that's really not clear, but if you read it that way, it's kind of interesting. "Here, take this." "Hmm, busy listening to the ocean right now...I'm still kinda freaked about that thing because of the 'dream'..." ~big wave~ "You really should take it, ding ding..." "Aw hell..." Hellboy grabs it as the wave hits, and we know that because on the next page he's floating through the water with it in his hand.
I'm wondering if it's not part of the "crossroads" Mohlohmi was talking about, because it doesn't look that wave is giving him any choice about whether or not he goes into the sea, so his choice of roads must come from different actions.
