Hello to everyone!

My name is Steve, & I'm a new board member. I have been a collector of comic books since 1968.

I've recently come across an item that I was wondering if anyone knew anything about. I was also wondering if anyone thought it had any value. What I'm about to relate is what I've pieced together about a little known, 9-years in the making footnote in the history of comics. It began at the end of the Golden Age & came to fruition during the early years of the Silver Age, 1959.

I'm talking about a 12 volume illustrated encyclopedia titled "The Picture World Encyclopedia", which I picked up a few years ago a a flea market. It is printed on comic stock paper, with comic stock covers. Each volume is 10 1/4" x 7 1/8" with 190 illustrated pages.

In 1959, Rinso detergent soap offered this "The Picture World Encyclopedia" for sale for 50¢ per volume along with a Rinso Soap boxtop. Published by The F. M. Charlton Company, Inc., & edited by Gene Fawcette, it was 12 volumes long, & featured a profuse amount of comic-book type illustrations done by a virtual who's who of Golden Age & Silver Age comic book artists, many who also worked in the comic strip field as well.

In the final volume, there is a letter from the publisher stating that it took 9 years to produce this illustrated encyclopedia. So it was a "work in progress" from 1950 to 1959. The back of this page lists all the "Editorial Contributors", which is a three column list of names associated with this work. If you didn't have this final volume, you wouldn't know who the list of artists were.

Many of the famous (& not so famous) artists names that worked on this project are among the best of their period, with this information about their contibutions to this encyclopedia all but forgotten, (except in the case of African-American artist Matt Baker).

I believe this set is an almost forgotten footnote in the history of comics! The illustrations in this encyclopedia look like a Silver Age meets the Golden Age collaboration! Very cool!

Here is a list of all the names printed on the page, who contributed artwork & writing to the encyclopedia:

1. Edd Ashe---Don Winslow for Fawcett, Pep Comics, Human Torch, Ted Towers, Mike Shane;

Wow! I've never heard of this, but I don't hesitate in saying "YES! It has some value!" This thing, Steve, needs to be thoroughly documented while there is at least one known complete set in existence, for the sake of comics history.

Are you sure it's Charlton and not Gilberton (the folks who published Classics Illustrated)? This sounds more like one of their projects.

Either way, this is extermely cool.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, this encyclopedia has over 2,300 pages with more than one illustration on each page. There are many detailed drawings. I can pick out alot of Silver Age artists work, but I it's harder to pick out many Golden Age ones for me. Having the list of names helps out alot! I thought someone who was a bigger GA collector than me would be interested in it. I was going to list the whole set on ebay starting out at $24.99. What do you think?---Steve

Hey, if you're interested in selling that set of funnybook encyclopedias, please contact me. I'm not loaded with cash, but I could probably afford a lot more than $25. (No, I have no idea what they're "worth", whatever that actually means.) As the folks around here can attest, I'd be able to give 'em a very good home in the ODDBALL COMICS Archives!

Aloha,

Scott!

P.S.: That firefighter page was drawn by Jack Sparling. -- SS!

Have you notified the Grand Comics Database (http://www.comics.org) about your discovery? There's a plethora of comics historians there who'll go nuts over this. Please, before you put it on eBay, contact the folks at GCD.

Sorry. Where were we?

Yesss, I've been a major fan of Todd's for about 35 years; I even adapted the lyrics of one of his songs for a comic book story in CRITTERS No. 50.

I've been into Todd since 1973. I have met him a bunch of times, have TONS of memoribilia, & autographs, etc. It's nice to meet another Toddhead/Comic Historian. We are a rare breed, indeed! (And there's always more...) :)---Steve

Even though he beat me to the Sparling credit notice, I'll donate five bucks to the Sell-it-to-Scott fund. I'm serious! I wanna see some of this reviewed in the Oddball columns.

Looking over the scans, it looks very much like a Charlton project to me. From the colors (the presses were newer back then but it still smells like cereal boxes), to the hodge-podge of artists, to the general overall feel. Reminds me a lot of my 6 part Comic Cartoonist Correspondance Course I got for Chrsitmas (and still have) way back in 1967-8.

You gotta a paypal account Scott?

I'm in on the Sell-it-to-Scott! bandwagon. I'd hate to think that this would go to some unknown ebayer where it would drop forever into obscurity.

If this is a Charlton product, it seems in some ways to be upscale from their usual output, with that list of talent. Seems like Charlton would have instead found a couple of low-budget talents to crank out the whole thing.

I believe there's at least one poster here that knows Ric Estrada fairly well; maybe Ric remembers this project? Or Nick Cardy or Sy Barry? Somebody ask! (Hey, it worked with getting Scott! to quiz Sergio Aragones yesterday, so it's worth another try!)

I've had many pleasant shop-talks with Nick Cardy and Ric Estrada -- one of the nicest, most intelligent cartoonists ever -- is an old friend and co-worker of mine; we worked together for many years at Hanna-Barbera. Unfortunately, since Ric lives in Utah and I in California, the next time I see him probably won't be until the next SDCCI.

Aloha,

Scott!

Steve,

I hope you don't mind me posting this, but apparently, you're not accepting e-mail through this site.

I see by your profile that your occupation is "Internet auctions", so it's obvious that you're not just foolin' with us regarding selling this set of funnybook encyclopedias. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time or patience to deal with eBay, especially right now. (I'm absolutely overwhelmed by cartooning deadlines.) But I'd really like to add 'em to my collection of Oddball Comics. (You DO read my column here at CBR, don't you?) I really have no idea what these books are worth. But lemme make you an offer for 'em before you decide to go to auction: $200 for the lot of 12. Plus, I'll pay FedEx shipping.

Hey, I figure it's worth a shot. (Sorry if this seems like grandstanding, folks, but I've GOTTA get back to work...on Easter, yet!)

Thanks, Steve. I'm at shawcartoons@earthlink.net

Aloha,

Scott!

I'd also be willing to help Scott! pay for these. I'd really like to see these get to a comix historian, and hopefully get the info on the GCD.

Neat!

Google turned up a few hits, but nothing too informative. The most relavent hits showed up in children's book listings. No complete sets that I saw, but individual volumes were selling for only a few bucks each.

Steve - please take Scott's generous offer.

Scott - if this does end up on eBay, I'd be happy to act as a proxy for you. No fee, nothing special required. I'd track it and bid. When we win, I'll get it and resell it to you for $0 profit.

That's a great offer, Scott! I haven't tweeked my profile here, so that's why the emails didn't go through. Sorry!

Maybe having 'The Historian' proxy bid for you on ebay might be the way to go. Your offer is quite generous, but at this point I have several other people interested that I feel deserve a fair shot at this also. I hope you understand. I'd personally like to see it go to a fellow historian (a Todd fan, no less...) so I hope you win it.

Like "The Historian' said, google only brings up a few hits, & only one for comics. So this should be better documented by someone who has the kowledge to do it right.

A friend of mine said that Bob Overstreet probably knows about this set, but doesn't care about it. How could any comic historian overlook such a massive double-era encompassing project? I think my friend is wrong, & Bob should make mention of it in the Price Guide, if not listing it as well!

I will post a link to the auction asap. Best regards---Steve

As you all know, this board is not intended as a forum for selling comics. I let the thread go on this long because it seemed like the comic in question was of major historical importance. But now that Vault-Keeper has announced his intention to post a link to the actual auction, I can see that this thread has descended too far into commercialism. I think all the interested parties now have enough information to conduct this sale in a more appropriate forum.

Good luck with the sale.
