View Full Version : Any Truth To This? Massive Thor Retcon

Hey all,

I've been wondering about a rumor I heard about on one of my mailing lists. Supposedly, Brian Michael Bendis would like to retcon Thor's participation in the Avengers out of existence, replacing his role as a founding member and team powerhouse with the Sentry.

It sounds absolutely assinine, and I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but I'd like to know if there's any truth to this, however distorted, and where this rumor started in the first place.

Thanks,

Jeremy Harper

there's no way he could pull that off

*first time I've heard this rumor*

Well, I for one hope it's complete bullshit ... but at this point, I won't put anything past Bendis.

Man where in the world did you hear this rumor?

the sentry takes the place that thor would have held in the new avengers, the god level powered heavy hitter.

That rumor sounds totally bogus. There is no benefit to retconning Thor out of Avengers continuity like that.

Could it be done? Of course, we are talking about comics here. All they have to do is say that Sentry was there from the start, and that when they used the device to make people forget about him, they just substituted this image of Thor in his place.

Yeah, thats it, in reality, Thor was never an Avenger.... ;)

Heard it on the Robert E. Howard Comics list. Poster was ranting on how shitty Bendis and Quesada are.

I should probably go back and reread the post, make sure that I'm not mistaking what the poster thinks for what he said he heard about. It sounds pretty dodgy to me, but stranger things have happened.

Sentry will be the heavy hitter during Bendis' New Avengers run (at least until Marvel decides what to do with Thor).

Thor has not been retconned out of Marvel continuity. He was mentioned in New Avengers #4. Spidey thought Sentry was Thor for a second.

oh come ON people calm down, its not like(even if this is REMOTELY true) that it will be a kind of tearing down of another story to replace it with another, think of it as a What If...? without the title, just calm down

Sounds like the moron was just making stuff up to justify his hate for Bendis. A surprisingly common practice among the scarier fanboys.

Thats kinda funny because there was a rumor a few months back that maybe Sentry is Thor in disguise and I suppose with the long hair and beard, he does bear a resemblence to him.

Even so, I hope none of the rumors are true. Its bad enough that Marvel tried to give Captain America founding member status and taking away the Hulk's.

Cap deserves honorary founding status ....hell , he's the heart of the Avengers ....they'd follow him anywhere !

I think if they planned to do something of this magnitude , they'd have done it in the Sentry mini .

The House of M is at hand! Woe unto all ye unbelievers! :p

...Nah, I kind of doubt the rumor. If it turned out to be true, that'd pretty much hose the Asgardian's existence in Young Avengers, now wouldn't it? ;)

That would be terrible to write Thor out of Avengers history.

Sounds to me like a rumour created by the Bendis Bashing Brigade...

Well, the only way that Marvel writes Thor out of Avengers existence is if it is for one storyline during House of M. But there's probably going to be a whole lot of stuff messed up with during House of M.

I think it is true, then Thor will be replaced by an protoplasm blob from a pocket universe who then becomes an Earth angel. Then a teenage Thor that was put in a space capsule by his father Odin-el will land on Earth. Meanwhile, Franklin Richards will create a pocket universe with a Thor that he only remembers from his other universe. This Thor will come to our universe and destroy all the other Thors.

Besdes, we just had the Earth's mightiest heroes recap, and Thor was front and center for that one; it would've been easier to put sentry in there, if they were going to do it.

If this is true what would Stan Lee's resposne to this be. He and Jack Kirby both created the Avengers.

I´m trying not to dislike Bendis so much, I was one of the bash Bendis fanboys, and I´m starting to see things I like in NA but if this rumor is true then my hatered for Brian Michael Bendis will rise again and I will not be a fun person on this board.

But seriously I´m trying to keep an open mind.

Rumours abound.
Most of them are started by people with an axe to grind.
I wouldn't pay too much attention to this.

oooohhh, I like that one.

If anyone was reading the recent "Earths Mightest Heroes" 8-part, it certainly felt like it was Cap that caused the Avengers to hold together. He was being redefined as the reason why they got their government clearance and is the central core of the group. (Which we have all felt for years, but in fact, was not the case for the first four issues of the original run. Perhaps they'll combine those original four issues in a trade someday...ooops! That's a modern day trend now, isn't it?????)
