Okay, I'm sitting here listening to Utada Hikaru's all-English album, Exodus (great album, really--she can sing very well, the lyrics are nice, and you could play everyone of these in a dance club and everyone would love it), and I'm realizing I've not seen ONE commercial for the album, no promotions at all, which is strange consdering Timbaland made it, and to my knowledge there's no videos or play on radios. It is, technically, a non-existent album outside of J-Pop circles, which sucks because she won't release any more English albums if she knows she can draw the same crowd singing Japanese. This, in fact started as a topic where I was going to ask about her, but I changed it to a topic to ask about similar albums you have, and thought would be good and popular, but then just turned invisible, more or less...

Far too many to mention, so they remain my secrets ...

My guitar teacher Carlos De La Paz has been in two bands that hardly anybody has ever heard of (except people who've known them or seen them live). One was the early 1980s power pop band known as the Heaters, who were a local sensation in Southern California circa 1980 and recorded an album for A&M that was never released. During the mid-1990s, Carlos was a member of a band called Cid, whose members included former Oingo Boingo members John Avila and Sam Avila.

Carlos has been a session musician for years, playing sessions with everyone from Bette Midler to Ringo Starr.

I don't know that nobody's heard of this one, but I'm the only person I know who has a copy of Jellyfish's Bellybutton. I bought it when it first came out in 1990 or so, and fifteen years later it's still one of my favourite albums.

The only other person I know of who's heard James Luther Dickinson's Dixie Fried is Nick Tosches. And some writers on allmusic.com. And the people who produced it and wrote the liner notes for it and stuff. But that's it.

I can't think of too much beyond that.

That was a killer album. Is it out on CD? I used to have it on cassette.

Anyone have "By The Grace of God" by the Hellacopters?

Flogging Molly's first album: Behind the Green Door It is a live album and kicks more ass then any of their studio albums.

My copy is on CD. I don't know if it's still in print, but you should be able to find a copy somewhere.

About half of my record collection.

Then again, you don't really expect jazz albums to get big.

Man, the shit I used to have before I sold my record collection. One highlight was an album called Revenge Will Come by Greg Copeland. I bought it on vinyl in the mid-80s after a review compared him to Warren Zevon, and I love the album. The Zevon comparison is valid in some ways, but this guy definitely had a voice of his own.

Anyhow, now all I have is a dub of the album, and that tape itself is about 20 years old. Once it's gone...

I have an album by a friends band called The Beeps that just rocks. They sound like Jefferson Airplane covering James Bond theme songs.

probably the only album i have would be the quireboys, and i forget the title. the only reason i bought it was because i thought it was the london quireboys, not a band called the quireboys from london. ive only listened to half of it and it basically sucks.

but maybe other people have heard of them, i dont know.

I imagine AIDs Wolf isn't very K-ROCK or MTV friendly.

Though I've heard of Fuck. They are pretty good. They sound like nothing like you imagine band with a name like that. They sound kind of like Pavement or Silkworm.

I believe they've already gotten their record deal(I work with the lead singer)

You'd imagine correctly. More noise kind of music like Lightning Bolt if ya know who that is. The singer is the female half of the amazing design group Seripop.

I heard of Lightning Bolt. Not a huge fan of the noise music. I like Wolf Eyes though.

I'm sure a lot here have heard of them, but I have albums by many groups that none of my friends have ever heard of:

Cirrus
Dead Milkmen
Dig
Kula-Shaker
Lotion
Lucy's Fur Coat
Lush
Magnapop
Possum Dixon
Shudder to Think
St. Etienne
Stone Roses
Superchunk
Tripping Daisy
Ultravox
Wool

If you like Wolf Eyes you'd probably like Black Dice. AIDS Wolf probably should be described like a mix of Lightning Bolt and Death From Above 1979 since they have a bit more structure to things than LB.

How about Tanita Tikaram's "Ancient Heart"?

It's her debut album and it was spectacular.

I have a great CD by Lorene Drive. I have no idea what it's called, I got it from some friends of the band. But it's sweet, they're from my town. http://lorenedrive.com is their site, I think.

Dead Milkmen

Seriously? That's sad.

Okay. Here's mine.

Rasputina - The Lost and Found. An all-cover album that's really awesome.
The Pillows - Another morning, another pillows (Their b-sides and rarities album.)
B'z - Loose (Big in Japan, but over here...)

I have their latest album. Pretty good stuff. And you just have to love a name that totally doesn't match the music.

I know that this band used to be big in the 80s, but nobody I know seems to remember them: Thompson Twins' Here's To Future Days (Rollover is a great song!)

!!! - their first album, noone had heard of, now they have gotten some fame from their second album.

Soviet - We Are Eyes , We Are Builders - in the "heyday" of Electropop, or Synthpop or whatever it was called, these guys produced an album that would have sat comfotably in about 1983 but still rocked.

The Tyde - Once and 2nd album Twice - perfectly harnessing their '70s roots, they should be the American version of Soundtrack of Our Lives.

Stone Roses
...
Only one of theirs that I have (or have heard) is Second Coming, but, dang, that's a good album.

Looking over my CD rack, here's the stuff I seldom, if ever, hear mentioned.

Popscape: The Very Best of Ralph Covert and the Bad Examples
The Drovers - Kill Mice Elf; Little High Sky Show; World of Monsters
Lisa Gerrard - The Mirror Pool
Voltaire - Almost Human; Boo Hoo; The Devil's Bris

The only one of those that I heard had a cover of "Brother Louie" on it. Damned if I can remember much else about it, now that I think about it.

The Pillows and B'z don't count, unless they were released over here. Foreign albums aren't going to be big over here 'cause they're only released in Japan and bootleg shops/sites.

Luniz-Anything they did

These guys came out with one radio single ("I got Five on It"), but I never saw or heard anything else they did until just recently, and they're VERY good.

Man... Overwhelming Colorfast was a very sweet band. I'm glad see I'm not the only one who appreciates them. "Totally Gorgeous French Chick" is one insanely catching song.

and my "no one's heard of list"...
-Kicking Giant "Alien ID" (guitar and drums noisy indie rock duo)
-Dump "A Plea for Tenderness" (James from Yo La Tengo solo)
-Half Handed Cloud "We Haven't Just Been Told We Have Been Loved" (amazingly beautiful yet short songs in the vein of Olivia Tremor Control or The Music Tapes)
-Enemy Mine s/t ep (two bass guitars. drums. heavy as fuck)

and i'm not sure if this falls under this category but I sure as hell never here people talk about these amazing records:
-Rodan "Rusty"
-Red Star Theory "Sleep Came Slowly"
-A Minor Forest "Inindependence"

Don't have any.

But I'm pretty sure that no-one here has heard of Nile Petar Movier. He's a czech trumpet player who plays over techno-ish beats. Goodgood stuff.
