I’ve just bought “Happiness in Magazines” by Graham Coxon.

Just a quick recap for those of you who missed the previous episodes. Coxon used to be the quiet one in Blur. The brooding, geeky guitar player who superficially looked like Buddy Holly and was this generation’s best heir to the Pete Townshend mantle of post-modern guitar deconstructivism.
While he was in the band, Coxon released three solo albums, each of them recorded in two weeks, and so lo-fi that they were released in cheap cardboard boxes instead of the usual plastic jewel box. Those albums were Graham Coxon’s attempts to be more minimalist than Pavement and his opportunity to write miserable, self-centered lyrics.

In 2002, while he was leaving the band, Coxon released his fourth album, “The Kiss of Morning”, the first that actually sounded like a genuine studio effort rather than a collection of hastily recorded bedroom folk songs. With that album, he proved what his fans had suspected for years: Blur was actually the product of two talented songwriters, the ambitious and well-traveled ringleader Damon Albarn, and the introspective and hard-rocking little-boy-lost Graham Coxon.

Now it’s 2004, and Coxon’s days as a member of Blur are officially over. So it’s time to start something new, maybe build a little something for himself, his own little corner of Planet Rock. “Happiness in Magazines” is his attempt to do just that. And it’s largely a success.
No longer is Coxon the king of scratchy, noisy miserable little art-rock numbers. This is the album of the guy who co-wrote “Song 2”, it’s a collection of angry, catchy, and sometimes downright infectious pop-rock songs. Don’t get me wrong here: the guy still can’t sing to save his life, and he’s still not convinced that spending weeks and weeks in a recording studio looking for the sleekest production is the best way to make a good record. But this time – with the help of British veteran Stephen Street – he’s actually recorded his best, most accomplished effort. This time, in addition to Coxon’s folk and punk rock roots, you can hear echoes of Tom Petty, PIL, even early Paul McCartney. There are catchy choruses, sarcastic lyrics, hey, there are strings on three of the songs. It actually sounds like a direct sequel to Blur’s excellent “Modern Life in Rubbish”, like a 21st Century Kinks record, like the album Weezer wished they would be able to make. You’d almost believe that Coxon had fun recording this album. Even the guitar is back. In fact, it’s everywhere, in long, insanely creative solos so full of strange, discordant sounds that your cat will probably commit suicide right in front of the loudspeakers. And of course, there is “Freakin’ Out”, almost certainly the best rock’n’roll song of the year. The quiet one has raised the bar to new heights…

I Just picked up Madvillain-Madvillainy a few days ago. Now Im torn between this and Soul Survivor II as to which is my favorite hip-hop release this year. The production is damn near flawless, and I rarely hear MCs as enigmatic as MF Doom. His rhyme style is insane.

"20th Century Masters: the Millennium Collection, Vol. II" (which has a bunch of songs I like from across 6 or 7 KISS albums all on one CD -- and two HORRIBLE songs (Crazy crazy nights, and Reason to Live) I can skip over).

I also just got:

Spin the Bottle: an All Star Tribute to KISS (special edition, w/ the CD). a freakin FANTASTIC album, featuring KISS songs covered by "all star bands" featuring members of :Twisted Sister (Dee), Styx (Tommy Shaw), Slaughter (Marc Slaughter), Winger (Kip Winger), KISS (Bruce Kulick (along w/ Carmine Appice), Motorhead (Lemmy), Gilby Clarke, Poison (CC Deville), and even Chris Jericho turns in a perfectly acceptable cover of "King of the Night Time World".

Much better effort then "Kiss my Ass" was years ago.

Louden Up Now by !!! - The latest released by the dance punk band with an unpronouncable symbol. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

King of the Scene Vol. 1 by the Pinch - Local band that plays a combination of punk rock and 70s piano-driven rock and ends up creating lovely tunes. Originally they said they had "almost completed their album" but it seems they have opted to release it as three eps, each with a video.

Feast of Wire by Calexico - I got this after their concert here in Saskatoon. Sadly there is no version of Crystal Frontier on it that turns into a funk groove midway through like there was at the concert. :(

It's because of his music. I find it quite refreshing that even if you're a gnome in assless chaps and a jeri curl, you can still get people to listen to your music without prejudice. But hey, don't listen to me, I've never been interested in what musicians wear.

Three cd's from the Naxos classical label: three cd's for 20 bucks! Anyone who likes or wants to get into classical music should head straight to the Naxos section (if there is one) of their local record store.

Anyway, i bought:

Brahms - Violin Sonatas;
Sonata No. 3 is pne of my favourite pieces of music. The violin and piano almost seem to be talking to each other. Awesome piece.

Mozart - String Quartets;
String quartets aren't usually my thing, so I wanted to give these a try, to see if I can learn to appreciate them. After one listen, I'm taking to it more quickly than I expected; I guess I just never really listened to any before. Reminds me of Frippertronics.

Tchaikovsky - Piano Concertos No.1 & 3;
No. 1 is the famous one that everyone's heard, even all the people who think they haven't. Probably one of the most recognizable melodies in existence. And for good reason.

I only listened to it three-or-four times before it got stolen last time. *Sigh*

I did really like Wednsday Night Prayer Meeting, but I had like four or five other versions of that song at the time, and the rest of the album fell flat. Or at least the concept behind it didn't allow for the compositional brilliance of his other works. But, then again, I never gave it a really thorough listen.

And I'll try'n review "Give" as soon as I get my ^&*(*( CD player working... *sigh*

i hate prince. no. i dont hate him. i fucking despise prince. i will never understand why a gnome in assless chaps and a jeri curl has risen to such insane super-stardom. down with prince. so needless to say, i own not a single prince CD. and i never will.

i also think that a tribe called quest is one of the most overrated groups (in any genre) ever. next to radiohead.

wow. in one post i bashed three bands that just about everyone else in the entire world loves more than their own mothers. Is "I just bought" too ambiguous a thread title for you?

Tanya Donelly - Whiskey Tango Ghosts,
a new album, accoustic same sweet high breathy vocals

They Might Be Giants - The Spine & The Spine Surfs Alone,
The Spine is easily my least favorite TMBG album yet but not really horrible. Bad TMBG is still good. The EP is more of the album, no real difference.

The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (single)

I was buying the last two books of Bone, which came to about $24.90. Amazon has free shipping available for orders over $25, so instead of spending $6 on shipping I spent $4 on this single. The funny thing is I don't even have the actual album yet.

I guess I'll have to buy it from Amazon, then find something else for 10-15 dollars to avoid paying shipping again... DAMN THEM! ;)

The new Faces box set, Five Guys Walk into a Bar.... I already had all the albums, but this thing is as necessary as oxygen if you have any interest at all in the Faces, Rod Stewart, bloozy British rock 'n' roll, or just good music. It's damn great.

The Strokes, Is This It (replacement copy)

The Treniers, They Rock! They Roll! They Swing! One of the many bleed-overs between jump swing/rhythm & blues and straight-out rock & roll. If you like Brian Setzer, this is where he got his stuff.

(Also bought a bunch of books & comics today. Hooray paycheck!)

And Ska Authentic Presents the Original Skatalites

Not the greatest Skatalites collection ever, azzit turns out, but worth the five bucks for the lnear notes. I will now reprint them, in full, as a public service, saving y'all a fiver.

Thousands of people have been asking what is SKA, who started SKA and where it was started? In 1956, when 78 RPM records became absolete, sound system opreators then and there could not get more of those rhythm and blues tunes, so they decided to produce these records locally. Foremost among those operators, was Mr. Clement "Sir Coxson" Dodd, who first started experimenting with the new beat which is today recognized as "SKA". The purpose for producing these new songs, was to provide music which his followers cuold dance to with ease, as well as listen to with pleasure.
It was not asa easy as it sounds. It took years of study and research to perfect the beat that we now seem to all be enjoy-ing, not only in Jamaica, but in other countries as well. In1957, Rr. Dodd variated the then existing beat with emphasis on the off beat produced by the guitar with strumming the rhythm, suitably backed up by the rest of the band. Our Jamaican hep steppers showed how much they enjoyed this music, therby giving it the shot in the arm it really deserved. Since then this beat has not lost popularity.

Tina Dico-Far: I love the songs she sang on Zero 7's When It Falls, so I figured I'd pick up her EP, and it's pretty good. Acoustic folk rock type stuff, and very easy going. Now if Sophie Baker would just put out an album!

K-OS-Joyful Rebellion: One of the most talented and respected MCs to come outta Canada. Took some getting used to because I think of him as a rapper first, and a lot of the album is him singing. But he's great at both, and mixes a lot of different genres of music from rock to hip-hip, reggae, latin, whatever you can think of.

Talib Kweli-Beautiful Struggle: Coming from an MC like Talib, I expected better. I was actually shocked at how weak this album was, because Quality was just so unbelieveably good. I mean, it's still better than most mainstream rap, but like I said, Kweli's capable of better! Even the Neptunes track was crap!

I just bought V-Dog South Memphis and it impressed me enough to write a full review.

1. "Surprize, N!ggaz" V-Dog starts out his sophomore album with a poem letting his audience know about the lack of attention he has received for his past work. He also lets everyone know that he's back and here to stay. The laid-back beat that he created for this intro is very nice, and I wish he would've saved it for an actual song. 4/5

2. "South Memphis" This song is my second favorite new cut of the year, and one of the best on the album. V-Dog keeps it real with his lyrics, showing off his improved skills. The beat has that classic South Memphis feel to it, and it should be right up there with Gangsta Blac's S.O.U.T.H. Parkway as South Memphis's anthem. 5/5

3. "Chicken Heads" For a 'let's go f*ck sum ho's' type song, this is pretty good lyrically. Nice beat. 3/5

4. "Last Man Standing" This song is from V-Dog's debut album 23 Hourz and features Gangsta Blac, Talio, & Playa Fly. All four rappers just flow in and out without a hook. The beat is very dark, like something that belongs on one of the really old school Memphis albums. All the rappers come hard, particularly Fly and G.B., but V-Dog and Talio manage to hang with the kings. 4/5

5. "V-Dog and Da Gangsta" Another old song featuring G.B., this is from Gangsta B's second album Can It Be? from back when he was with Prophet. Paul and Juicy did the beat, and it's decent at best. G.B. and V-Dog used very different voices back then, and it's interesting to hear the change. They both come very hard considering how new they were at the time, particularly V-Dog. 3.5/5

6. "Killaz on da Reala" The third song in a row with Gangsta Blac, this song also features Playa Fly. It's basically a duo cut for those two with V-Dog just on the beat and hook. Both rappers drop some incredible verses, though, and the beat is on point. Judging by G.B.'s voice, this track is old (2001-ish), but I haven't heard it before. One of the best tracks on the album. 5/5

7. "Da Lord is Callin" Memphis vet William Brown evokes mempries of the late Bill Chill with his work on the hook in this song, while V-Dog drops some great, deep lyricals overed the laid-back beat. At first, he raps a little too forcefully for the style of the song, but he calms down soon. This is the first single and it's a great choice. 4.5/5

8. "Beamin' 'n' Leanin'" This cut starts off with a sample from Playa Fly's classic posse track "Damn What a N!gga Say" and then V-Dog drops his great verse from that track over a new beat, on which it sounds even better. N!gga 9 and a cat I don't know finish out the song, and they both do alright. N!gga 9 usually comes a lot harder than this, though. Still a very good track. 4/5

9. "Dark Dayz" This is another track that features Gangsta Blac and sounds like it's the G.B. from a few years ago, but that's beside the point because this cut is straight fire. V-Dog tells the story of all the animosity between Three Six and Fly/G.B., while also telling of his label history. He does a beautiful job too, I don't think I've ever heard the "Mista S.P.V." flow this well. G.B., of course, comes in a rips up the final verse. The beat is great throughout the track, a classic Blackout-style production. 5/5

10. "No Radio Play" This is the second single for the album, and while V-Dog drops some very clean lyrics, the beat and hook are simply average. Still a decent track. 3.5/5

11. "Stop Da Violence" Da Undaground King, Gangsta Blac, shows up once again, and once again he and V-Dog straight tear stuff up on this track (maybe they should do a duo album). The beat is great, too. 4.5/5

12. "Mental Loaded Chamber" V-Dog changes his voice a bit for this song and he doesn't sound as good as usual, but it's not bad. Fortunately, his lyrics are still very entertaining, telling a story, and the beat is pretty phi. I like the hook too. 3.5/5

13. "Welcome to da Southside" This song has a great hook and a good beat. The beat gets cluttered at time, but when it simplifies itself, it really works. Two rappers that I don't know do this song, but they both drop very nice, thought-provoking verses. I wish V-Dog would have rapped on this song, instead of just producing it, but this is still a good track. 4/5

14. "Trained 4 Combat" This song starts of with a very long skit, and then a fast paced beat kicks in. The beat is simply alright, but V-Dog and Talio, especially V-Dog, save this song as they come very hard with some inspired lyrics. They talk about the wrongs of the draft and the war, and it's powerful stuff. 4/5

15. "Strapped Is How We Roll" The group Menace of a Dam Shame shows up on this track. V-Dog uses the more raspy voice that he used on "Mental Loaded Chamber" again, and again it doesn't work as well. While all rappers drop decent lyrics, the first two and the fourth (one of which is V-Dog) don't flow very well. The third rapper, who has a very laid back voice, is the only one who manages to flow well over this beat, which is just plain bad. This is the only track that I'm not feeling. 1.5/5

16. "Taking Namez" This may be a typical gangsta song, but V-Dog, SS Boy, and Lil Gain all come hard, especially Gain. When mixed with a cold beat and a tite hook, this track is a winner. It was nice to hear SS Boy again. I hadn't heard him since 2001. 4.5/5

17. "Other Side (R.I.P.)" William Brown once again sings on this track, and he's even more reminiscent of Bill Chill on this song. The sad beat suits the song perfectly, and V-Dog drops some very nice and thought provoking lyrics about his friends that have passed and the wrongs that caused those deaths. Great song. 5/5

Bottom Line: Fans of Gangsta Blac, Playa Fly, Terror, and Playa Posse should pick up this album as soon as they can. Hell, all Memphis rap fans should go ahead and cop this album. Most southern rap fans lookin for something to chill too would do well with this album too. Overall rating: 4/5

This is the best album of the year thus far to me, and with Gangsta Blac, Playa Fly, and Criminal Manne all set to release albums within the coming months, it appears as if South Memphis is back on the map. Now if someone could find Tommy Wright III...

Talib Kweli - The Beautiful Struggle

It's not as bad as some people would have you believe, and Kweli is, for the most part, on point with his lyrics as well. But some of the song choices are questionable with some dubious beats and production work, especially since he had the entire album reworked and its launch pushed back four months because of internet leaking. It's (IMO) Kweli's least enjoyable and less coherent album to date, sort of like a difficult album marking Kweli's transition to the mainstream, but then again the man has put out sterling work so far, so I'll still be looking out for his shit, but he definitely needs better quality(ha) control.

I never thought it was terrible, but I think Kweli's built such a reputation for himself that Beautiful Struggle is pretty sub-par by comparison. Still better than most mainstream rappers' CDs this year, though.

I Had a bad feeling the album would be underwhelming(by Kweli standards) when there was no Dave Chappelle intro!! His impression of Nelson Mandela on the Reflection Enternal CD was priceless, and he came back even better for Quality. But yeah, not hearing him do an intro was unsettling from the get-go. And yeah, no Mos Collabo?!? You'd think with all three entertainers gaining popularity, their combined presence on Kweli's album would be a given!
