I drove about two hours today to the best vinyl store in the state, and unfortunately only had about forty-five minutes to browse, but I did come out with:

Suzi Quatro - Suzi Quatro
A Nod Is as Good As a Wink - Faces
On Tour with Eric Clapton - Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
The Tin Man Was a Dreamer - Nickey Hopkins

I was also searching for Captain Beefheart's Clear Spot, Chi Coltrane's self-titled album, Bobby Whitlock's Raw Velvet, John Cale's Paris 1919, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago's Les Stances a Sophie, but had no luck with those. I asked the girl behind the counter for each of these, and after she told me no for each one of them, she looked at me kind of funny and said, "You are a man with very rare taste." I don't know if it was meant as a compliment or not.

If so, then JB, I have you to thank for that. If not, then JB, I have you to blame for that.

They had the United States of America album you mentioned, but they had it marked at $30, and that was just too rich for my blood.

Yesterday I laid my mits on obscure oddities...

Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation a two disc compilation of an obscure Chicago R&B label from the late 60s/early 70s issued by the Numero Records Group.

And I got a hand-drawn, hand-written zine about pyschedelic rock called Galactic Zoo Dossier. It's 104 pages, came with seven sheets of hand-drawn trading cards (nine per sheet) and two discs of obscure pyschedelia. Teenage Meadows of Infinity: Rare Pyschs & Stomps collects eighteen older pysch obscurities while From the Ashes Perfect Attainment Shall Be: Modern Freaked Sounds...well the title sums it up.

(From the Ashes has a band called Plastic Crimewave Sound on it. Tee-hee!)

I just ordered:

-Heaven- Where Angels Fear to Tread (an 80s "hair" band. I have the album that came after this, called Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and it rules. Hard.)

-Glitterbest, which is a 20-track compilation of early-to-mid 70s glitter/glam rock (Hollywood Brats, the Jook, etc). I'm just starting to dabble in this sub-genre, as I love the bands that it and its members spawned (the Boys, the Vibrators, other punk/power pop bands of the late 70s).

The Slits are like the only punk (or whatever you want to label them) band from the 70s that I don't like. I had wanted to hear it for a long time because I love 70s punk/garage/power pop/new wave, and I love female vox/bands. But I just couldn't get into the record.

It's raw. The Slits never really knew how to play or write songs. That's what makes the record so compelling. I see elements of the girl bands--such as the Go-Go's, the Bangles, etc--with the Slits.

Crazy Itch Radio by Basement Jaxx.

On eMusic (to use up my 80 remaining downloads before my account refreshes on January 24):

Beat Box by Class Candy, one of the artists on the After Dark comp. Great stuff.
Suicide by Suicide
Memories of the Future by Kobe 9
Tectonic Plates (Disc 1, I'm not sure if eMusic had disc 2) by Various, a compilation of British Dub Step released on the Tectonic label.
Bongo, Backra & Coolie: Jamaican Roots, Vol. 1 by Various, a compilation of Carribbean music that sticks real close to its African roots. So lots of droning, poly-rhythmic percussion.

Also a few songs off the new Disco not Disco: 1976-1986 Vol. 3 compilation. Not all it interested me but I did get some choice cuts:

"My Spine is the Bassline" by Shriekback
"Binary" by Kazino
"Los Ninos del Parque (12" mix)" by Laisons Dangereuses

And from the first disc of Norton records' digital boxed set I Hate CD's: Norton Records 45 RPM Singles Collection:

"The Monkey Speaks His Mind" by Andre Williams
"The Girl Can't Dance" by Bunker Hill.

I also got another song that Link Wray cut with Bunker Hill off the Norton Records Link Wray comp Some Kinda Nut - Missing Links Volume 3 called "Red Riding Hood and the Wolf". There's actually very little Link Wray guitar on it, but Hill's hoarse, shamanic vocals more than make up for it.

I also accidentally downloaded a song by Mighty Sparrow called "Jean and Dinah". But that's okay because it's a nice song and it's Mighty Sparrow.

Crazy Itch Radio by Basement Jaxx.

On eMusic (to use up my 80 remaining downloads before my account refreshes on January 24):

.

Heh.

I just figured out I always buy a booster pack, so I might as well upgrade to 200.

And I just found out Bill Laswell has a new group, and a wife. So I got the wife's record, and the dub version under her name, which of course sounds nothing like, and she's not on it (well, she might be, somewhere). And apparently a bunch of other Laswell things have snuck up there while I wasn't looking, so I bagged them too.

Another reason for the 200.

And there's a total emusic bargain there for avant jazz: a nine CD set that's hunnert twenny smackers in the store; or a eight bucks to download. Hmm...

Because the songs are longer?

Actually, that's probably a good reason why. I mean 100 downloads seems like a lot, but then you actually start getting through them...

That, and free-jazz is not very common in most record stores I've been to. Which isn't exactly a whole lot, but I suppose the fact that it is music I would otherwise need to specifically order makes it more of a draw. Which probably partly explains the dub-step downloads.

Machine Gun is good.

You capitalist roader! MACHINE GUN is nothing short of godlike!

How's the Oud?

Very nice.

Finally scored a copy of Bettye LaVette's new album, The Scene of the Crime.

That's some powerful shit.

The best track on there is her cover of the Elton John song "Talking Old Soldiers" from his album Tumbleweed Connection. John's version--while solid and touching--seems like John is chanelling a bit of cabaret, a bit of Broadway via English blues. He's playing a character--and that's not a knock on the song. LaVette's version, though, cuts right through the artifice, and she sings as if we're hearing a woman tired of the bullshit, and ready, one last time--and maybe for the only time--to lay her soul bare, and to speak from the well of pain that comes from her painful, personal experiences.

So, yeah, man, that's some powerful shit indeed.

And speaking of powerful music, this morning I stayed in from work because of a periodically-recurring, debilitating illness that--when it kicks in--leaves me unable to move without extreme pain. Anyway, I was on the computer, drinking my coffee, and I bought the Fiery Furnaces' Widow City. I had a couple of tracks from it anyway that I just loved, so I decided to plunge into the album entire.

One of those tracks--"Ex-Guru"--has caused my wife to scream to me, "If you play that fucking shit again, I'm going to throw your iPod out the window." You see, halfway through that song, the structure changes drastically, from a catchy-little ditty to gutter-Kashmir: loud distorted guitars, slower tempo, Middle-Eastern-sounding strings--all producing decidedly dissonant music (the first time, anyway). She continued her harangue, telling me, "You know, music like that can cause people to go batshit crazy, don't you? That--whatever it is--makes me physically ill!" I knew better than to argue with her.

Following "Ex-Guru" is "Clear Signal from Cairo," I song I first heard this morning. It has more internal dissociative changes and dissonance than "Ex-Guru" does (though it does have its charm). About 3/4 through the song, I began to get physically sick, and I began to vomit...and continued to do so for several minutes.

Now...this regurgitation is most likely a result of taking two Lorcet Plus tablets at five in the morning with nothing in my stomach at the time and nothing in my stomach three-and-a-half hours later. HOWEVER...maybe my wife was right....
